Sweet, so is he trying to do this caddie thing more going forward or just filling in for Flores's regular caddie.

Fun stuff today. I would say I am working on very similar things with him as with Will. Will needs much more guidance due to age/experience than a 5 year Tour veteran, but I'm still going through and picking all of his targets.

I'd say the main thing I think Martin struggles with is basic focus. Quieting all the little distractions out of his head (as much as you can) and being fully present on each shot. He has a tendency to get distracted and lose a little focus on almost 15% of his shots. That's pretty pathetic.

So we used the practice round to really reinforce a few goals and then I simply made sure right before he started his routine to "make it a good at-bat". An "at-bat" is a grading system that simply rates his focus on every shot. It is pass/fail. Did you have any really distracting thoughts past a certain point in your routine is the question. He normally fails about 15% of the time and today was his best day ever with 63/67 positive processes. The four bad ones were all things he could have regrouped from but didn't.

I believe 95% is a very lofty goal and that's what I hope for him to hit this week. It's interesting because many people don't believe you can control thoughts, which I do agree with to a certain extent. But I do believe you can put in a routine that will help keep the thoughts at bay better. I don't think it is a coincidence that the first time I caddie for Martin he put up both a good score AND a great "at-bats" score.

The at-bats is something he has always tracked, but is it something similar to what I did while playing that my sports psych called the Second Scorecard. Trying to quantify a mental process is hard, but is about as good as you can do during a round of golf.

Hopefully he keeps the processes solid and playing how he can. It will be a fun week if he does!

Side note: weather is looking pretty sketchy for late tomorrow and Saturday. If I have to carry a Tour bag for 36 on Sunday it is going to be rough. Couple that with I am caddying for a kid named Kramer Hickok next Tuesday through Friday at Second Stage of Q School in Dallas. Kramer is Spieth's roommate right now. I can't imagine being 22 and fresh out of college living with Jordan. What an amazing motivational tool to wake up every day in a sweet house with a crazy gym/golf studio and the Masters and U.S. Open trophies sitting in the entrance.

That is the proverbial "sick life".

Not doing the caddie thing more. I'm trying to work my way into being a bit of a mind and strategy coach. Shockingly there is quite a bit of poor strategy on the Tour and as we all know there are headcases everywhere.

I've talked some with Martin this year and when he Monday qualified this week he asked if I would come out and watch him in an event to get my thoughts.

Very cool. It is weird how much poor strategy there is. Must be a lot of guys using pure talent, just like how they have always played the game since they are just good.

Mental and course management is interesting

I've finally realized my layup strategy is terrible.. Zero thought to keeping out of rough nor getting nicer angle on protected greens. Pro's seem obsessed with this in my live viewing experience....

I thought the centre of greenor the flag exerts power over golfers even on layups. People aim for those unless the line is crazy for some strange reason

Another course management thing is avoiding bad areas no matter what. Like where my fade and crosswind work together, I should aim really far over and/or way more club with easy swing.... But of course I don't

Phil Mickelson won't be in Mexico this week -- unless he's on vacation -- but he deserves mention for a streak that came to an end for the five-time major champion.

For the first time in more than 20 years, Mickelson fell out of the top 25 in the Official World Golf Ranking, a remarkable feat of consistency for a player who is typically not known for that trait.

Mickelson, 45, was just about to turn 24 when he missed the cut at the 1995 Kemper Open, dropping to 26th in the world. A week later he tied for fourth at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock -- the start of a number of close calls in that tournament -- and moved to 21st in the world.

He didn't drop out of the top 25 again until Monday.

Anyone ever go down to the OHL Classic to watch? Crowds seem small and great vacation spot.

Would rather play golf or lay on the sand on vacation personally.

I haven't been down to watch, but I played the course a few months ago. There were more maintenance crew on the course than there were golfers. I think we saw 3 other golfers on the course. A single and a twosome.

I am assuming the heat had something to do with the low turnout then, but not sure why it would now. The tournament was played in the spring a few years ago.... I wonder if there were better crowds then.

I believe it was $150 in the morning and $220 in the afternoon.

It sounds expensive, and is, but a lot of the courses in the area are in the same range. The par-54 course at our resort was $90 for non-resort members.

On the bright side, they let you play a 2nd round for free if the course is not busy. Not sure if this is available all the time, but it was for us and I believe was also available when I checked on GolfNow at the time.
