I just had my first golf lesson. I've been to the range three times. I now have a putter, pitching wedge, and sand wedge. What should I start working with next? A driver? 5 wood? 5 iron? But a pair of golf shoes? I have another lesson booked already and I'm enjoying practicing. Money's not super tight but I like to spend it wisely.

Probably a 7-iron then a driver, both cheap. You're just starting out and have no idea where you're going to end up with this but definitely enjoy it. If you continue eventually you'll want to get a more full set of decent clubs.

And I see you cross posted this question in that idiot’s thread in NVG who is an 8 handicap and never worked in the golf business. That’s like asking about brain surgery techniques here.

Yeah I would follow what BO said and get a 7-Iron and a Driver. Then get a cheap full set later down the line.

As for shoes. I would say it depends on where you live. See I'm in the UK and play in all sorts of weather so I need to have a good waterproof pair. I've had many Waterproof shoes that claim to be fully waterproof but in the end they are a huge let down. My recent pair have been really good and its actually made me a customer for life with Footjoy never once had wet feet.

Keep up the lessons and the practice, a lot of people skip this part whilst they still enjoy it they would enjoy it a little more if they could get round the golf course a bit better.

Yep driver and 7 iron. Can buy cheap used ones on eBay or from Callaway pre-owned site, 2nd swing golf, etc.

Unless you're just practicing in a sim or hitting off mats, you'll really need some golf shoes. I'm a fan of Puma myself, I just find them to be the most comfortable for me. Hurricane Golf has a lot of good deals on closeout Puma shoes, I've bought 2 pairs from them.

Thanks Bo! I bought a 7 iron I'll start shopping around for a driver. I'm enjoying it enough that I don't think I'll quit anytime soon. I've been buying used extended length clubs off eBay and Callaway pre-owned. I think grip size is more of an issue than length for me, I'm 6'5 with very wide palms

Sounds good. Don't worry too much about the little details for now like club length and grip size although it sounds like you're getting what you probably need. Those are very important at some point of a player's development, but for the next several months at least you're simply trying to develop a halfway reliable repeating swing.

It's tough but fun!
