I was trying to figure out the weird scheduling for this event and went to pgatour.com. Evidently it's the third straight year they've scheduled a Monday finish. Last year's event was such a mess that I didn't remember that, and the Monday broadcast runs earlier than the other days so as to finish before the NCAA CG begins. That means they're scheduled to be done by something like 1PM local time in Hawaii. Sunday's broadcast should only have a couple hours overlap with the GB - SF game, so they're tap dancing around the football coverage fairly well.
Anyway, here's hoping for four complete rounds this time.
Yeah I guess if you only have a 30 man field you can do a 1 PM finish if you want.
I am glad Chamblee was kept, at least he makes stories I wouldn't otherwise care about more interesting by stirring up drama and getting the haters furious.
Yeah Chamblee is fine. Geoff Ogilvy wrote a piece for GolfWeek or GolfWorld recently (whichever one I subscribe to, can't remember...Ogilvy is a decent writer by the way, he also did a good piece after the US Open at Merion) defending, effectively, Chamblee's right to an opinion.
Ogilvy also with some delicacy called Tiger to the carpet for being part of the problem by giving "empty" interviews - that may not be the exact term he used but it was similar. His point being that Tiger has a tendency to give interviews that don't actually say anything, whereas if after the various controversies he said "look, this is what I was thinking" and walked people through it, it could help head off any controversy before it gets legs.
I'm really REALLY not trying to turn this into another Tiger discussion since that always turns threads to total **** and will punt posts out of here if it goes that way, but mostly wanted to point out that Chamblee is a useful foil and alternative opinion. I don't think he's trying to be the Skip Bayless of golf opinion, his stances often seem to have merit. Does he hate Tiger and wish to tear him down? To be honest I'm not paying close enough attention to know the answer to that, but the furor surrounding his comments was pretty ridiculous. It was also probably good publicity for a sport that rarely gets headlines outside of April - August.
Saw Adam Scott playing and thought the field be surprisingly strong. butnahhhhh. I'm a live golf cumslut so it's not like I won't watch but would be nice to have a few more big names. Not sure of the OWGR breakdown but it looks like four non-US players, Dufner, and 25 Billy Horschels.
Yeah I guess I exaggerated a bit. Those are top tier guys / names.
Had a laugh at the Streelman interview after his round. "You bogeyed the last two holes...does that hurt more than if you bogeyed two holes on the front nine instead?" Now I realize world class golfers are experts at viewing every shot in a vacuum and avoiding tilt but yeah Jerry, if I chopped up the last two holes and went from solo lead to T-6 or whatever and had to wait until tomorrow to hit another shot I would be more annoyed than if I gave back those shots on say #2 and #7 instead. That is not a good question so much as it is rubbing salt in the wound.
Thing about Jordan is that his bad shots are probably worse than most journeyman pros but he can still score better than them, so there's room for him to get even better. Think his game really suits Augusta.
I made a comment in discussion with my buddies yesterday that Spieth is going to have a monstrous 2014. That kid can roll the rock in from anywhere on a putting surface. Definitely want to get out and see him play in person this year.
I think the bounces aren't as big on 18 as they used to be on either shot. I remember guys landing 40 yards short\right of the green and rolling all the way to the middle and I remember guys getting 70 yards of bounce and roll off the tee. That's just not what's happening this year so far.
