No, I love watching the US Open and the harder the course is the better

It's not a decent US Open if not at least a couple of players whine about how unfair and terrible the course is.

We didn't even have one for The Masters so I figured that tradition was dead.

There will likely be a few lost balls/unplayable lies as that stuff is really thick in some spots.
this is becoming a common talking point. i'm watching a bunch of "Live at the U.S. Open" and yes the fairways are wide for a major, but a **** ton of drives (hell layups and other shots) are going to find the fescue. it will be an issue and the USGA is very nervous about this (especially after the embarrassments in 2 of the last 3 U.S. Opens). Mike Davis has said as much. we'll see how things work out...

That's exactly the way it is on most courses in Scotland where they invented the game. And nobody is forcing them to play out of the tall stuff, they have the option of taking an unplayable lie. Assuming they can find it. Nobody at all would be bitching if the tall stuff was water or OB, they are bitching because it's different.

If you hit it that far off line, you deserve to get bent over. At any event. Especially in the US Open.

i wasn't as clear as i should have been in that OP. i don't want them wasting too much time looking for these balls. 5 hour rounds could be the norm. they'll have no choice but to take an unplayable lie. i forgot the option of going backwards on a line after declaring an unplayable lie.

Re: 2016-2017 PGA Tour Thread

I read somewhere online that the fescue rough is exactly the thickest right on the edge of the cut, but deeper in the fescue it's of varying thickness, and that's even before counting for gallery and other traffic trampling it down. This was because of irrigation seepage: the natural fescue is not irrigated, but the fairways and shorter rough is. Thus, the tall unmown rough closest to the irrigated areas is getting extra moisture and is lusher and thicker and more penal. One could argue whether or not this is ideal, but it is the way it is: a ball let's say 20 yards offline will be worse off than a ball 40 yards offline.

Re: 2016-2017 PGA Tour Thread

Has there ever been an actual lost ball in a recent PGA tour event in simply fescue/rough? Isn't the present of almost every camera angle and tons of spectators make this virtually impossible in this day and age?

I thought Lee Westwood had a ball go into a tree and never come down.

All the time. Much easier to do so on Thursday and Friday when there are far fewer spectators. Just rarely happens to a TV pairing for obvious reasons.

It will probably have a ton of driver/wedge still, no reason not to bomb it with 40 yard fairways.

Seems like the course would have to be 9000 yards for DJ to need 5 irons.

I assume that he was referring only to his second shot to 650 yard par 5s.

Re: 2016-2017 PGA Tour Thread

these bermuda greens look crusty or something. they just showed kaymer's putt rolling to a stop and it was bouncing around like the plinko game on the tiny spike marks and such.
