in general: cities with a university/college >>>> cities without

as for the worst: cities in eastern europe in the nineties (except for capitals like berlin or prague)
my "favorite": Bitterfeld, Saxony-Anhalt at that time

Binghamton certainly isn't pretty, but it's like heaven on Earth compared to my hometown an hour west, Elmira, NY. The only thing that town has going for it is Mark Twain's corpse that's been rotting in the ground for 101 years.

Seattle, Washington. Downtown Seattle specifically. You can just feel the tension and hostility in the air.

WTF? I thought u were a man of the world, PP isn't even remotely bad for beggars. It's mediocre as a place though, I'd put it on a par with Vientiane.

I enjoy both PP and Vientiene. i'm pretty well travelled, and the only city i've been to that i've decided specifically i'd like to never return to was Toledo, Ohio. truly the armpit of the universe.

Thought they were both ok, wouldn't rush back to either but wouldn't mind going again if they were on my route.

+1

btw if anyone hasn't been to Vang Vieng because of its reputation, it's actually really nice. The out of control partying/drugtaking is like 95% on this little island in the middle of the river, so you can do as much or as little of that as you want to. The rest of the place is a chilled out little backpacker town, in stunning surroundings, with plenty of decent food available and lots of outdoor activities like hiking, canyoning etc etc available.

I didn't think there was much of a party scene at all tbh, just the standard few pubs you find anywhere and I was there just before NY. The scenery around is very nice though and worth going for that.

Luang Prabang owns everywhere else I've been in Laos and probably asia as a whole for that matter in terms of being a beautiful chilled out place.

lol Toledo isn't THAT bad.. it's crappy but, it does have a few things.. few really nice restaurants right by the river. And Tony Paco's hot dogs. Toledo just really reminds me of a little Cleveland.

+1 for this. As a tourist in Manila your options are usually get scammed or fear for your life. I traveled all over the world and wasn't at all prepared for Manila. I imagine it's one of the few cities that can prepare you for traveling through some of the sketchier parts of Africa which I would never do.

I'll give a vote for Sao Paulo. It was expansive, crowded, dirty, overpriced, and home to some of the most eye-opening poverty I'd ever seen.

I doubt just before NYE is a good time to go to Vang Vieng, people generally prefer to be in big cities for that. Also a lot of the people who go to Vang Vieng are Australian and Australians travel Asia during Australian winter, not midsummer. I can tell you the party scene was pretty mental when i was there, everyone went tubing and got drunk during the day and then were doing mushrooms/drinking more at night. Pretty rowdy over on the island.

Luang Prabang was nice enough but a bit dull.

Well I was in Vientiane for NYE itself and that was packed and its peak vacation period there over xmas/NY, so I dunno what to say bud as VV wasn't the jumping place I expected at night.

There is obv not much nightlife in LP but if you think its a bit dull as a place I don't know what to say..........

well from the cities I have been to PP has been the worst wrt beggars. paris is pretty bad too but there it is more advanced begging, more like scamming imo but I liked Paris otherwise so can't rank it that low

the only thing I liked about PP was that I got a new visa to thailand

I have only stayed 2 nights in vientiane but I don't remember that many beggars there. in PP they were just everywhere and it was so sad and depressing to be there. maybe i managed to fail with the whole city, i don't know

and i am far from "man of the world", whatever you meant with that

Depends what you travel for I guess. LP is obv interesting to the traveller interested in different cultures but cultural tourism is one of the few things I'm not interested in. The three big things I travel for are nightlife, natural beauty and food/wine. Also some interest in sport and culture but of a western variety (that is, I like it if a place has a good theatre/music scene but I want it to be in English). The food in LP was interesting but not spectacular and it didn't really tick any of the other boxes.
