I'm not really going to sit and defend Canberra as it's a waste of time and I would certainly advise visitors to Australia to skip it. However it does have a couple of things in its favour: it's a University town (so plenty of young people) and everyone who works there works for the government so they are mostly pretty well off (which means an unusually high number of good restaurants for a place that size). It's very dull no doubt, but it doesn't rate for me in terms of ****ty places on a global scale.

whats with all the negativity in this thread ? I think somebody has to close this thread and start a new thread title "what is the best city you have visited"

best for me would be

- Bangkok ( play pool with bargirls)
- Barcelona ( doing coke with hookers)
- London ( playing snooker with mates)
- Antwerp ( my home town , just general awesomeness)
- Amsterdam ( FEBO , the best fast food in the world)
- Macau ( 24/7 gambling and some nice sauna's)
- Udon Thani ( laid back small town in thailand )
- Beijing ( Tianamen square is impressive)
- Malaga ( south of spain , party atmosphere, laid back, good food)
- Barcelona ( on my list twice, TAPAS, bread with olive oil while enjoying an estrella)

so close this thread start a new one with the BEST OF THE BEST

I thank you !

Whoever posted about LA and San Diego is totally crazy and apparently haven't traveled around the US a lot. In no way am I going to say I love LA but there are several cities in the midwest, south, and Detroit that offer far less than LA and are just as dirty if not worse.

San Diego is a great place so I don't know where that came from

How many of the people saying Detroit have actually been there? There are a few world class museums, 3 fairly nice/big casinos, all major sports, 2nd largest theater district in the country, MI has more coastline than the entire east coast of America, and things are relatively cheap.

Try renting a Velib. Really awesome program.

100% agreed. I loved all of Norway except Tromso, which was billed as "the Paris of the north." LOL maybe like the 17e arr.

Took my son there to see a couple games at the old Tiger stadium before they tore it down.
Sorry to say, but the place seemed a ****hole to me: abandoned buildings everywhere, damage apparently left over from riots before I was even born. The "highlight" was Greektown, which was only remarkable in not being a complete ****hole (anywhere else, it would have been completely unremarkable).

Fair enough. In the 12 years since you have visited a lot of the stuff on my list opened.

I lived just over an hour from Detroit, and have been there many many times.. casinos, sporting events, going to canada, airport.. even driving up I-75 going to detroit it's ghetto, with the grimy concrete walls and trash laying all over.
Personally my main problem with detroit is that, you either have total crap, or urban jungle. I've been to Fox Theater which is right by Comerica and Ford Field and a car plant.. etc. 1/2 of all the "theater" places are within 2 blocks of eachother. Which is in a heavily industrialized area

I mean vegas might be an urban jungle but it just seems like a different world compared to detroit, and I hardly ever go to the strip etc.

When you go in the wrong part of town it's bad bad.

Nothing is really any cheaper in Detroit than in the rest of the midwest.

The Palace was great to go see shows at, but that's in Auburn Hills

Washington DC is probably the top city I've been to that I would least like to live in. Crime, traffic, and tourists everywhere. But I haven't been to any of the "bad" American cities like Detroit, Cleveland, New Orleans, ect.

I've also lived in St. Louis my whole life, and we're not going to win any "best city" awards anytime soon.

Listing casinos as a good thing for a city does not work well usually. Casinos bring in a lower level degen type of a individual and can suck a local economy dry.

I'll throw one out there Brussels. I use to get sent there for work all the time when living in London and for a week at a time and would be in complete boredom. There was just nothing to do, no good places to head out. Plus I watched the Last samurai there not realising half the film didm't have English subtitles. It was the worse

Probably a bunch of little ghetto cities in LA; Commerce, Bell Gardens, Sun Valley, Compton, Inglewood etc - even Long Beach, where I lived for over a year haha.

Outside of the US Hanoi, Vietnam was the most boring city I've visited as a tourist and the one I'd be least likely to return to. Manilla is a huge hole but its fun. It's easily the worst city I've seen as far as safety, cleanliness etc.

Heh. If you hated Hanoi I suggest not going to other cities in Vietnam as it was all downhill from there for me.
