I haven't been to any truly horrible third world places, but Gibraltar would be my pick. I'm a journalist and I was flying out to interview UK bookie Victor Chandler. I discovered the flight was to be diverted to Malaga because landing in Gibraltar is apparently a liability and can only be done under certain 'conditions'. I arrived in Malaga and by the time I got to Gibraltar by bus transfer, the guy couldn't do the interview. I was stuck in a city composed mostly of a massive airfield, dust, horrendous expats and ugly concrete. Then the flight back was cancelled due to a rainstorm. a good day
Don't hate on Gibraltar. The reason your flight was diverted was due to the crosswinds experienced on the approach to the runway due to the placement of the runway in relation to the rock. You will only be able to land if there is a westerly or easterly wind. I've been on countless planes when we've approached the runway (plane moving all over the place, people throwing up / screaming) touched down and then had to shoot back up into the air as there is not enough runway for the plane to land safely.

Fair point with regards to the concrete there are alot of buildings in Gibraltar but with a population of 35,000+, where are you going to house them all.

As for the expats - How did you manage to get yourself to that conclusion? It can't be based on your own knowledge as you obviously don't live here and during your short stay the only people you would have bumped into are tourists?

Gibraltar was one of my favorite places ever. I really cant understand your points. It has an amazing view, decent beaches, nice colonial architecture, some nice pubs and its a duty free area. Also I think it is hard to make a difference between tourists and expats there. Also its the only place where wild monkey live in europe and there are a lot of them which makes it even cooler!

I was referring to what SandraXII wrote.

And what don't you understand about what points I made?

Can't believe KL gets so much hate. Maybe not the most exciting place but nothing wrong with that city. Food is amazing too

True. I don't like Singapore either. It is still a nice city, just not for me.

I hate Singapore too but it would never crack my top 10 worst cities list because I just hate the style of the place but the substance is OK. It's like I hate Simon Cowell and Sean Hannity but I wouldn't put them on a Worst People list next to Hitler and Pol Pot.

I only spent a couple nights in Vientiane but it seemed OK, certainly not a dump on the level of Manila. Seemed pretty boring but a lot less overcrowded, less crime, people are more chilled.

i don't really understand people who mention singapore here. its a beautiful city, great food, fantastic nature nearby, and super clean. sure its not a city you go out and party hard in, but you have to look at cities for what they are. singapore is a beautifully built city. get a room at marina bay sands, chill by the pool, go shopping and just relax for a few days. for that its a great city, but i wouldn't stay there for longer than a couple of days. to put a city like singapore in worst city over something like manila is really weird imo

because they can't afford to enjoy singapore.

hell no I can't afford Singapore and I don't want to pay $400 for a room at the Marina Bay Sands.

Singapore is not interesting at all, have no desire to return. HK is expensive but still a cool place to go (imagine somewhere like Tokyo or Moscow is too, never been to either). But yes, Singaore is a nice city and would not be on my worst cities list nor would KL

Very sad to do a search for Ulaanbataar on 2p2 to see what people think of it and have this thread pop up. I'm there for about five days in mid-September.

I'm not understanding all the hate for Marseille. Been there a few times, it's not that bad. The hate for London, I get. Cold, grey, damp, dreary. Milan is not so wonderful either, though there is a lot of nice street art there.

Only semi-redeeming quality is that there are poker games going all the time at a variety of casinos.
You must be from Calgary, I am..

I do agree our nightlife is pretty weak, but I don't think it's the worst city. We have a ring road in Calgary now which makes travel a lot easier, but it still sucks and out C-train is pretty awful I won't lie.

The winters are really hit or miss, some winters it gets pretty cold and some it's really warm, I remember a winter where we didn't see snow till like March.

The poker scene is HUGE in Calgary and there is so many fish, we prob have the best poker scene other than MTL (Not that I've been to Playground) but I know a few of my friends from MTL came here before it was opened and said it was soo juicy.

We have so much oil money in the city the games run non-stop, you can find a 2/5NL game pretty much everywhere, we even have 25/50PLO games going on weekends sometimes and a ton doing the numerous poker series we have.

The games are super super soft, the 2am thing is pretty stupid but that's how it is in pretty much all of Canada.

View

The city is def overpriced but I don't think it should be making worst cities, it's also extremely clean and we have the mountains 45min away.

Don't get me wrong I think it sucks on a ton of aspects and I'm currently living in Budapest but don't think it should be hated that much.. Hahaha

Detroit hands down for any USA city. Biggest US city to file bankruptcy being almost 20 billion in debt. Also has one of the worst crime rates in the country. Complete dump with tons of abandoned houses and crime everywhere.

Newark,NJ. Flew into there when I was 7. It was my 1st airplane trip. Children threw rocks at our car windows as we left town.

Manila is the one that always comes up when I think worst city I have ever been to. Dirty, polluted, slums full of kids, traffic, nitty poker...

I'll frame this in terms
Of poker rooms, has to be hands down Immokolee Fl the tomato distribution capital of the US in central Florida, corrugated steel casino in Podunk rural south central fl the only good thing is an abundance of fine taquerias, opposite of that I nominate cripple creek CO as the mini gambling Mecca, old mining town with a bunch of casinos where you can play cheap poker games and .25 table games, at least back in 2008

I didn't think Manila was that bad when I was there. That said I was killing a couple of days before heading to Borneo so I only really saw the hostel and the shopping mall.

Every city I visited in India is worthy of mention but I think that Delhi is marginally worse than the others. You're constantly being deafened by car horns, you can't walk for more than 2 minutes without being stopped by a 'helpful' stranger, every time you get in a tuk tuk you end up being taken to the "official" tourist office instead of the place you asked to be taken to and it smells of ****.

I don't think India is the poorest country I've been to, Ethiopia has that title. However, no one does human misery like the Indians.

Out of my Europeans travels over the last year, I would say that Zagreb, Croatia is the worst city I've traveled to so far.

Zagreb is what a city would look like if it was designed by Charles Manson.

Strangely this makes sense. I'd probably also pick manila to live over a lot of places in the motherland if given the choice.

and the tie goes to Guayaquil, Ecuador or Barranquilla, Colombia. Both are large industrial cities, with a fair amount of crime.

Guayaquil smells bad due to brackish water that flows in and out of the city, combined with heat & humidity. It's been about 25 years since I lived in Guayaquil but my first thought at the time was wow this is a lot like Newark, NJ but hotter, more corrupt, and smells worse.

So, I'm giving the nod to Guayaquil.

Nice bump haha. Jakarta really is the pits. If you can't drive anywhere during most daylight hours without waiting in hours and hours of traffic your city flat out sucks. Although largely industrial chinese cities have to be the most depressing places on earth, imo. I lived in one for 5 months. Tongzi, northern Guizhou province. A concrete jungle where the sun didn't come out for months at time during the winter. And central heating is not a thing that exists! The air pollution was awful, but your lungs kinda got used to it after a while. Although it became bearable (even nice!) during the spring/summer, because it actually does have a really nice countryside, but by god for the first few months I was there it's hard to imagine a more miserable existence unless you can appreciate it in a dystopian future hell-scape type way.
