My guess is noone's been there. Australia is pretty close by but there's no way I'd visit it.

For anyone not aware of Jakarta's reputation, here's a description from Wikitravel:

Quote:
Jakarta's nickname among expats is the Big Durian, and like its fruit namesake it's a shock at first sight (and smell): a sweltering, steaming, heaving mass of some 10 million people packed into a vast urban sprawl. The contrast between the obscene wealth of Indonesia's elite and the appalling poverty of the urban poor is incredible, with tinted-window BMWs turning left at the supermall with its Gucci shop, into muddy lanes full of begging street urchins and corrugated iron shacks. The city's traffic is in perpetual gridlock, and its polluted air is matched only by the smells of burning garbage and open sewers, and safety is a concern especially at night. There are few sights to speak of and most visitors transit through Jakarta as quickly as possible.
Good times!

Although I've mostly only traveled around Asia, Jakarta is the worse place I've been to. Anyway, the nightlife is quite awesome (although dangerous)

I'm also sure some places in India or Middle East are much worse

On the other hand, Seoul is probably the best I went

Worst city I been to is Sharem el shejk in Egypt.

It's full of tourists, almost no locals live there. There are armed guards everywhere, you can’t go down to the beach, only a small part that your hotel own (mostly 15 meters).

For example one local Muslim man come swimming with his wife, she had full clothes on in water, the man phone rings and he went back up to answer it, she stood in water to her waist not being allowed to move until he got back.

That was the only Egyptian women/girl I saw in one week. And they don't sell beers on restaurants. In my hotel I put 3 beers in freezer; they moved the freezer out of room when I was away. So many flies on hotel I had 40 bites when waking up.

And then it was the casinos. None of the dealers knew the rules. The locals where team playing. I bust one of them, then his friend takes his chips from table, walk around pillar, and give his friend half his stack so we can continue playing. This was after we bust a couple tourists and I was having a good time so didn’t mind. They weren’t’ the sharpest dudes I met exactly, looking at each other giving away the strength of their hands. I semi bluff turn with pot bet, the guy that lent money calling and I see his friend giving him stare down, why u calling that much, so I instant push river empty and surprise surprise he folds.

In US: Fresno California...asked a local to recommend a good restaurant and got, "Chucky Cheese Pizza"...and that was one of the top places, lol.

Out of US:
Probably Skopje, Macedonia for most depressing and depressed people, but worst overall would be Warsaw, Poland. Just a great big, ugly mess of a city that is expensive (relative to other cities in Central/Eastern Europe), a nightmare to drive in, sprawling, and not particularly interesting in any way whatsoever. Even Pristina, Kosovo beats it in almost all ways...

But then I've never been to any of the ragingly sexist countries in the Arab world and probably never will; I strongly suggest my top ten worst would be radically rearranged were that to change...

It's a huge, endless, concrete jungle with horrible drivers...but...I visited a friend who had lived there for a few years and knew it well. I had amazing food, great times at clubs, and met some awesome people, so i would go back, so long as I could either remember the places we went while there or had a local guide again. Otherwise I'd just be lost in a none too lovely on the surface city with horrible air.

Agreed Warsaw is a hole. I was there basically enroute from Berlin to Krakow and the first thing I saw when I left the train station was some guy lying on the ground who'd been beaten up, with blood all over his clothes. Nothing to do there. Only redeeming feature quite hot wimmins.

In the US--Detroit by a landslide. Memphis is awful too. I'm a Hoosier and have been to and through the "region" (aka NW Indiana--Gary/Merrillville/Hammond etc) and it's crap too.

Outside the US, Acapulco and Nassau. I've been just over the border in Juarez, but not far enough to experience it--otherwise it's prolly the winner.

Abeche, Chad and not close (central Africa). We couldn't go 100m without spotting/smelling cadavers of dogs and cattle dead of dehydration. People don't beg for pocket change there, they beg for a sip of water. Manila poverty is heavenly in comparison. I'm sure there are tons of way worse African cities as well.

Noone would ever go there as a tourist anyway tho. And actually, I had quite a good time there regardless

As far as international cities, I don't think I've been to any that would be on my list of worst cities. I try to travel to places that are worth visiting

Singapore, beer costs $15 a glass, accommodation is crazy expensive, everyone is over educated and the laws suck if you like cars, drugs, smoking, basically anything fun.

If you go to McDonald's you will see most customers look like zombies, are around mid twenties studying for their third degree or some ****, they're all studying at the tables, its quite sad actually IMO.

Apparently they have built a casino, but I highly doubt anyone there knows how to enjoy themselves, so its probably quite lame.

If you like fun do not go there.

Heres an example of how ridiculous this place is, (police state...COUGH)

How to Enter and Exit the Casino Properly: ($100 entry fee BTW!)

•Please enter and exit the casino according to your residency classification, “Singaporean / PR” or “Foreigner”.
•Once you have paid the Entry Levy, enter the casino through the “Singaporean / PR” lanes. Scan your NRIC card, driver’s license, SAF identification card or Re-Entry Permit and proceed immediately into the casino.
•Those who are not qualified as Singaporeans or Permanent Residents are considered Foreigners and must enter and exit through the lanes marked “Foreigner”. If asked, please provide ID consisting of a foreign passport with a short term immigration pass, long term visitor pass with a photo ID or with a foreign passport, student pass with a photo ID or with a foreign passport or a work pass, an identification card issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to diplomats and professional staff in international organizations, a work pass with a photo or a special pass with a photo issued by the Ministry of Manpower or Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. (those carrying work passes that do not feature a photograph, must also present their foreign passport)
