Trip Report: San Pedro Illegal Prison Tour Trip Report: San Pedro Illegal Prison Tour

In 2010 I participated in an illegal tour of the famous and notorious San Pedro prison in La Paz, Bolivia. This occurred at about the half way point of a 1 year solo backpacking trip through South America.

It was a totally wild and bizarre experience. I wrote up the details of the trip report soon after completing the tour, but I haven't published it until now.

Please read my Trip Report: San Pedro Prison Tour. I spent a long time writing this up, so I would love if you read it, and to hear any feedback or questions.

In our case, we bribed the guards to let us in, and the tour was highly illegal, and therefore I can't condone anyone attempting this or give specifics on arranging such a tour. However, I am happy to answer any questions.

This is the same prison and tour referenced in the book Marching Powder.

Nice write up and an interesting look into the prison system abroad. It seems like it is a self contained world when you enter, yet at the same time you are still connected to the outside.

Would recommend a read if you have some time.
