Travel Safety Resource Question Travel Safety Resource Question

What would be a good resource for finding out if certain areas of towns are safe to walk?

We will be going on a trip within the US and part of our group will be staying a nine minute walk away. I just wonder if the walk will be relatively safe so that made me wonder if there is some kind of comprehensive resource for this sort of question.

If there is an existing thread for this question, please feel free to move.

Post info here, maybe some of your fellow travelers have experience with the area.

You could also just risk it.

Hate to break it to you but if you're going to the US only....there isn't going to be very many areas that are safe. Far better off going to Canada or Mexico if you're concerned about safety. ESPECIALLY if it's safety when walking around town specifically. Not sure how cemented your plans are, just throwing it out there that you should probably consider somewhere else.

You would get better answers for sure if you posted the city/area

I would like a more unbiased resource. I can't imagine hotel staff admitting we are staying in an area I am liable to get knifed while walking out their front door after dark.

I really shouldn't have specified a specific trip as I am more interested in the overall idea of an online resource center that will tell you if an area is safe.

I've never used Trip Advisor so maybe they are what I am looking for, but would they have such level of detail if I wanted to know whether walking after dark on 42nd street in Manhattan was a good idea for example.

It isn't that I am going to the US as much as I live in the US.

It's always a good idea to walk around wherever you are. Meet a more interesting class of people that way.

Actually, no. Felt quite safe walking all over midtown Manhattan. Even when we walked back to our hotel from the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center late in the evening.

42nd Street was the location I used as an example as it was a pretty memorable trip.

Thanks.

I am definitely going to use one of the websites suggested by the Google results your link led to.

For grins, I might use one to see if my neighborhood is really as safe as I think.

If you are in contact with any person who is local there so you should be asking him he will be giving you more effective advice.

Even though poster is banned, I thought I would respond.

It is a city that none of us have been before and none of us know anyone.

I suppose I could have called the local police department.

I worked overseas in my 20s and was based in East Africa for couple of years, before that, Guayaquil, Ecuador.

I remember my security briefing, person from embassy said if you are in an area and notice there are no children or senior citizens you should be cautious. If there are only men ages 15 to 55 then definitely be alert. Situational awareness. Keep your head-up, look around, minimize being on your phone. Avoid anything that draws attention to yourself, (e.g. expensive watch, jewelry, bright clothing, etc..).

With that said, places I've felt least safe in my life, were Oakland, CA at the intersection of Telegraph and Broadway by the Doggie Diner around midnight, Gary, IN after leaving the Horseshoe around 1:00am, New Orleans walking down Canal St. around 3am heading to hotel from French Quarters, and Las Vegas on westside of Orleans Casino in parking lot by restaurant/bar across the street.

I'll add my own two cents, if you go looking for trouble (e.g. drugs, street-walkers, etc...) you WILL find trouble.
