With your experience you should really look into Japan as well

I had a friend who taught in Japan for years, she was in some Japanese govt sponsored thing. She made pretty good money as she could go snowboarding on her off days and had money to travel and visit home during school break. Was a pretty sweet setup.

A sailing thing came up so my available travel time just dropped to about two weeks, need to fly out of Asia in mid-Sept. Decided to head to Seoul and spend the time left in Korea, not sure exactly where. May just stay around Seoul, may head to Busan for a bit. Appreciate all the advice, guys.

Tough to go wrong with either Vietnamese or Japanese food imo

Really torn between a lot of the countries - Phillipines, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Korea, China, Laos.

Don't really have any goals or desires of what I want other than a place where I can get eat decent food (lol).
If I had the education to be an English teacher I'd choose Korea yesterday, to day and tomorrow. Than I'd choose Japan and maybe China only because I speak mandarin. But yea, Korea is the best place in the world so I wouldn't even consider those other countries.

Well, it goes without saying that those who have a romantic interest prefer the country where they have it

Is it my only uneducated impression, or do Cambodians indeed have darker skin on average than Thais?

No they have. But good luck landing a good gf there. From my private notes, I came to the conclusion that even if you speak the local language Cambodia is the hardest Asian country to land a good GF.

As you might remember, I don't need any gf or bf. But the sight of more beautiful humans in the streets does give some bonus points to a country.

I wouldn't say their women are naturally appealing, but I have to give them credit - they do beautify well.

There's a lot more to consider than just what type of girls you find attractive and what local food tastes good. You will not want to teach young kids. You will not want to teach rowdy villagers. I've been offering to help you move for years now, you should've taken me up on that offer years ago when I still had lots of contacts who could place you in a decent school.

Do some actual research into teaching in these places and choose a place that actually suits you. I'm guessing that means Japan>>>>> Korea>>>>> upper education China. Most places will pay your airfare, you don't need a gofundme.

Do you mean esl teaching or being an actual teacher in a private international school? If the latter I think Malaysia is the place to go.

I have a lot to say about this as I am an English teacher myself though plenty of it has been adequately covered by bgp.

Harder to do than it used to be.

In Europe and ME no shot. Most countries in Asia now require a uni degree.

Maybe in super rural areas of China you can do it though it would be illegal. Perhaps Cambodia.

Do you mean an uni degree in any field or only in language teaching? If the latter, does a certificate from a 0.5-1-year course of professional retraining in language teaching at a state uni in the country of origin count as a degree?

I appreciate your offers to help. I simply wasn't ready to do it. This isn't just working at McDonald's. It's moving to a different country and adapting to a different lifestyle. While I may have thought about it in the past and am thinking about it now, it's a HUUUUUGE step for a soon-to-be-54-year-old.

Also appreciate all the other responses posted in here.

Lots to consider.

Ha funny you should say that, first time I went to Asia to teach I just did it willy nilly, didn't really think about it too much, just got on the plane and figured it out mostly on the fly.

I was 18 then though, I suppose that's just how 18 year olds do things.

Overall probably smarter to be take the more prepared route you have in mind though.

Not much to consider except should you get a job before you arrive or after you arrive. Any country you've mentioned, wherever is the cheapest flight (that doesn't include "China" in the airlines name. Like China southern), go there. You'll love it. You've waited long enough. Everything you've heard, it's true.

Soon to be 54 means you better hurry up and do it!!

One advantage to being on the older side is you instantly get afforded more respect.
