It has been pretty good. Everybody is just laid back, friendly and chilled. Been here 3 months now, made some friends. I was glad I stopped by. There's an active poker community out there with games here and there. Going to be moving to Shanghai to check it out there, everybody keeps telling me that I should.

I'm staying in Taipei for about 2-3 weeks in November. Going with my gf (both 22yrs), looking to stay somewhere in the city hotel/apartment that is in close proximity with shopping, good food and night life etc.

1. Can anyone recommend where exactly in Taipei would be a good location for us to stay?
2. We are also looking to stay a week outside of Taipei in like a holiday resort, with some tourist attractions, nice scenery etc. Can anyone recommend a place like that aswell?

Don't know about where to stay, but Danshui, northern part of taipei is from what I hear a nice place for tourists. Nightlife- don't know what you're looking for- you're with your gf so I assume a lounge type of place? There's some nice all you can drink ones for 20usd.

You should stay in the HsinYi area. It's the newest area in town with the biggest concentration of shopping activities, cinemas and restaurants. You will find Taipei 101 there. At the end of SongRen Road, you will also find a nice series of mountains (albeit small) where you can do some hiking and enjoy a great view of Taipei. For cheaper rent, look for some apartments on Wuhsing Street (older buildings though).

As for your holiday resort, don't know what you want to do. If you want a beach resort, google Kenting. That's in the southern part of the island. Fr more impressive landscape, go to the Taroko Gorge near Hualien and stay at the Taroko Silks Place. A bit pricy but worth it. The area is amazing!

How easy is it to access places like Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, Taroko Gorge, Kenting, etc using public transport? I mean coming from Taipei, if I get on the high speed rail heading south where would I need to get off for some of these places, and will there be direct rail/bus link to the destinations? I don't really want to join tours(because I think a tour group will consist of tons of families or older people etc)

I've been to Taiwan a long time ago and know NOT to rent a car there and drive despite doing that everywhere else in the world.. hehe.

Also, apart from Taipei is there somewhere else in Taiwan that's got good food, decent nightlife, safe, good public transportation, easy to rent etc eg. possible options to grind?

Thanks

Just got to Taipei a few days ago.. this city has the BEST food in the world end of story... all day I'm eating then waiting to be hungry so I can eat again etc etc.. so far I've had shabu-shabu, Din Tai Fung(sick restaurant chain), as well as some Korean and Japanese meals from foodcourts near Taipei 101 and also Taipei Main Station.. the sick thing is that you're paying very little for absolutely awesome food.

Oh, and the 7-11 and FamilyMart stores here are absolutely awesome.. again low prices and great premade food as well... in fact their premade meals are better than the food in some entire countries I've been to(eg. Ireland, Scotland, etc)... the hotel's free breakfast is also absolutely sick...

In fact I dont know how Taipei's consumer prices are kept so low while being economically developed... how do they do it? The subway system here is also excellent..

Haven't been to Ximending yet.. Zhongxiao Fuxing/Dunhua is an OK area but not as good as hyped IMO.. Taipei 101 and surrounding = very modern, but I really like Taipei's older streets, nightmarkets, and foodcourts etc.. seen a few English pubs(I say English loosebecause they offer Rugby World Cup viewing so it's gotta be English/Aus as opposed to American bar), beer prices are OK I'm probably going to find somewhere tonight to drink..

Oh and thanks to the free wi-fi at hotel I've been able to grind a tiny little bit but with all the great food it's hard to focus on grinding lol..

I've been thinking to write up an updated "thoughts on Taipei" post, as I am now older and wiser. I've been going out a ton and meeting a bunch of people so I know Taipei a lot better now.

Don't understand but seems like it could be funny. Translation?

Also Brass Monkey probably has the highest % of Same Night Lays for laowais than any other bar/club in Taiwan - as noted by that red-shirted dude in the last few minutes of video.

Just wondering is there anyone currently in Taiwan who's SNE on Pokerstars?

I just left Taiwan after 2 weeks there... great memories for sure, the food in Taipei has to be the best in the world, people among the friendliest.. I think the weather in Taiwan has to be terrible for people to be telling me that this is practically the best time of the year in terms of weather since to me it's terrible.. but overall a wonderful city and I'm considering returning in early 2011 to play online there for a few months.. living costs being so low while an advanced country certainly makes it a very attractive place for a black friday poker refugee like me... ;-)

I could be if I could get my goddamn account reinstated. Been trying for months now and they keep asking me for more things. We finally got to the point where we could set up a phone call to verify everything, and they wanted a landline.

I don't have one, so I gave them my cell phone, but the call would not go through. Looks like I need a landline... Where do you find one of those these days??

Last edited by Aceuphisleev; 10-11-2011 at 01:00 PM. Reason: j/k probably would not be SNE but still pissed about my account

Hi guys,

be moving over to Taipei somewhere in November , wanna look for an apt near everything like Xin Yi. Internet wifi has to be good as I hope to do at least 2-3 hours of poker a day and just have the rest of the day off.

Anyone has any recommendations? Also would love to get in touch with fellow poker players who wanna hang out.....
