hi guys, will be replying to some old comments but just discovered this thread after being PM'd by one of the other posters here.
Plowed through almost the whole thread over the last couple hours(when I should be working) and can't help commenting on some things I've read.
I've been here in Taipei for more than 4 years now and, wow, cool that there are 2+2ers out here. I started off teaching and now own/operate a Subway franchise here. My observations, organized by topic and listed in order of importance:
1)Girls - I sincerely believe that the girls in Taipei are per capita the hottest girls anywhere. Hotter than Thai and Filipinos, hotter than the Asian girls back in Canada(or the U.S. I presume) and, well, I can't even look at a white girl anymore without throwing up..a little bit..in my mouth. Of course there's a type, and if there's any drawback, it's lack of variety, as almost all hot girls here fit that type: slim, tight bodies, awesome legs(which I found surprising at first), super feminine, and dressed in a way that would scream "hooker" back home(Toronto), but these girls are inherently classy enough to pull it off and it just says "sexy". If you're into that type, you should come here yesterday. Guys who live here, shout if you have
NOT seen one of these girls with a super-mini-skirt straddling her little motorbike or lined up at the club and said to yourself, "Oh..my..God."
Silence.
2)Living and Nightlife - The nightlife part is closely related to part 1, you do it primarily cuz that's where the girls are, at least the ones who dig foreigners
(note:I disagree with posters who imply that Taiwanese chicks are all about white guys - it's a certain segment of them who dig us, others are either afraid, have some weird perception about us, or simply can't communicate with us. I know plenty of guys who have slept with some very hot girls, but I contend that the very hottest are still with Taiwanese dudes.
ABCs returning home like prodigal sons seem to hold a special place atop the social pyramid here. I think it's the cachet of them being Westernised along with the convenience of them being familiar with the culture here and able(most of them) to communicate in Chinese.
A word of advice to newbies: do not get into a relationship with the first girl you hook up with here. You will regret it. It happened to me and I'm still with her.
The funny thing is, the night I picked her up at Roxy 99 I knew I had her in the bag(literally and figuratively) - she went to the bathroom and
2 smokin' young girls came up on me and started flirting, asking me questions and giggling.
When my now-girlfriend came back from the bathroom and saw this, she said, "it's ok, you can go with them", to which I replied, "no, I want to go with you". Perhaps if you live nearby you will witness such monumental bad judgement at the poker table some day.
It should be noted I was over 30 at the time(still am
) and she is (gasp) almost my own age, while the 2 nubiles were hotter and about 22 max.
To this day she asks me, "why didn't you go with those 2 hot girls?", and I answer, honestly, "I have no idea."
The bottom line is for you guys still in your 20s this place is a goldmine if you're confident but polite ..it's important to come off as a nice guy - I've seen slightly nerdy or boyish types outscore the macho/aggro type consistently.
Taipei is a great place for eating and drinking on any budget,
from great street snacks to high-class overpriced foreign fare, and if you like to stick with what you know, yes there are plenty of MacDonalds, Subway(mentioned that
), Pizza Hut etc.
For drinking, you can find little pubs to epic(Luxy) night clubs...one poster correctly pointed out that the edgy, underground stuff I used to be into has gone away pretty much
(legend tells of bouncers selling Ecs and Ketamine at the front door at the Moon Room or some such place)..
but for normal, less degen people the nightlife is just fine, I'm pretty much done with that part anyway.
Day to day life is great here - convenient, clean(sort of), super safe.
For those who mentioned hiking, this place is great for that
and I regularly take my dog for hikes in the very mountains you've seen pictured in this thread(by the way I think I know that Isreali guy who had to "leave quickly"
...I live about 5 min walk from there.
For anyone interested in getting some good exercise, seeing beautiful views in various spots around Taipei, and drinking
sh itloads of ice cold beer after, check out:

3)
Poker - meh. I suck and play for fun(unless I'm drunk, in which case I suck even more and play to conquer the world), so I prefer 1) and 2). Played some 1 table sit'nGos at the Allin Club with their ridiculous 25% fee, and some casual home games at my place with Taiwanese friends who don't know how to play poker(at least the folding part). I prefer the latter. But it seems like there are more and more games popping up these days. Ask Clint, he knows, and I know of 1 regular game that sounds decent, 3-5k buyins, lots of action, goes all night every Saturday - I'll try to hook you up if you want.
..and that's about all I gotta say 'bout that, sorry if it's too rambly.
