Taipei is easy to navigate by just speaking English. Most girls you meet in those clubs speak decent enough. You could start the conversation in English, and switch to Chinese only if needed. After a while you may thrown in a "sorry my Chinese is not very good" so you can mention that you are American in a smooth way, unless they figured it out already. I don't mean it for language reasons; but rather some girls will be interested in you just because you are American.

Taiwan probably is the best place for Japanese food, outside Japan. Both sushi and everything. Any random Japanese restaurant I walked in has been great.
Kid needs beating.

You need to look at 12-15 usd/night hotels to find staff that doesn't speak English.
