Also Last time I played an mmorpg on Taiwan server, in my 500 people guilds about 5 of them could communicate in English. Things I heard a lot was no interest in learning English, no need to learn English or we learned in school but we never use it so we forget. I never lived in Taiwan so I can't judge accurately. Maybe more people speak English in Taiwan versus mainland, but I'm sure it's far from majority.

Point is; English level still much higher in Taipei than it is anywhere in China. I'd also argue that playing on a Taiwan server for that game, you are playing with people spread across Taiwan, and generally the level of English outside of Taipei is quite poor. I'm sure BGP could weigh in on the English level in Kaohsiung, but I imagine it is quite poor, since it is the nitty gritty down there.

One thing about Taipei is that all the various universities are spread across quite popular areas, so the student population is pretty well distributed, and most of them speak passable - better than passable English.

I stayed in Tainnan/Gaoxiong (f using that silly pre-pinyin Romanization-I had no idea how to say Kaohsiung) for a month. I didn't speak Chinese it and was hard to talk to anyone at all. One salesgirl at Watsons did try to tell me that biore strips were for women.

Not using pinyin here is a huge complaint, it's beyond stupid. They adopted pinyin awhile back apparently but still aren't using it everywhere.

Anyways so far the English here has been amazing, but that might have to do with the places that I go. Went to a gaming place with a friend and everyone there had passable English, and the guy who sold us a boardgame coached us how to play the entire thing and then had a 20 minute conversation with us. Girls at the bar I go to the most speak great English. Just about everyone at the BJJ school I joined recently has great English.

All of those places are seeing lots of foreigners though so that's understandable. As far as English at places that don't have many English clients, I've noticed that most of the people can speak passable English pertaining to whatever they are doing but not much beyond that... but still it's night and day compared to mainland where you'll often get blank stares and half stifled laughter.

It annoys me in Hong Kong too. I didn't know how to pronounce Tsim Sha Tsui for the longest time. Turns out it's Jianshazui.
