Question about gambling in the UK Question about gambling in the UK

I live in the US. I happen to be very good at predicting the Oscars. In the past I've bet them online successfully, but now I don't really trust any online book anymore.

I've heard that the Brits punt (I think that's what they call it) on everything, and that there's a William Hill on every corner. I was thinking of coming to visit to put some money down.

Do British bookmakers take bets on that sort of entertainment thing? I want to put down $10,000 or so -- what kinds of limits do they have? Are the odds reasonable -- not that far off from a place like Matchbook?

Yes you will be able and if William Hill Don't there's like 3 or 4 different gambling companies on every street corner from Stan James to Ladbrokes to Betfred. Not sure about the odds sorry you could always email William Hill and they will tell you.

There is also max payouts. If you are betting 5 figures on an entertainment thing like that they may refuse you because may suspect you have an insiders tip.

The odds will be decent one would think.

They take bets on pretty much anything. I can walk in and place a bet on whether it'll rain or not tomorrow.

You're never going to be able to put down a big bet on an entertainment book - the bookies use those markets mostly as advertising (so they will be quoted in news stories about the Oscars/XFactor/whatever). Try to do a bet with potential winnings of even a few hundred and you'll get knocked back.

Online it's even worse - I've been restricted to stakes of £2 on entertainment bets.

Agreed, max stake will be wayyyyy below $10k. I guess you might be able to do the rounds and book some action at each bookies but meh.

very hard to get that much down - i was getting maybe £50 on stuff like best sound (but admittedly i didnt try that hard). youre going to have to give up big margins to get good size down.

all tax free of course though

no chance on the oscars as everyone's said, but it's pretty easy to get thousands down during a season of the x factor on betfair.
