Hey travel community, I've gotten a ton out of these forums as I've followed my passion of traveling around the World. I feel it is only fair to give back, and seeing that there is very little on the amazing city of Cape Town, South Africa in this forum, I figured I'd answer questions here.

I've currently been living here for 1 month so I am no expert, but hopefully I can shed light on stuff. I know I held off on coming here solely because there is very little content online geared towards mid 20's living here, so it was impossible to find enough about the place.

Ask away.

I hear that the big, muscly South African men are making you feel quite diminutive and this is affecting your self confidence. Can you expand on this?

i lived in phuket for a while, i've been to bangkok, chiang mai, and pattaya, phuket is the bestof the all. Thailand offers you very easy women after first world status, and the food is great, but when you crave western food it is very hard to get it.

you get 3 months upon arrival for US citizens, I assume it is the same for most other countries. To renew to 6 months it is an easy process, longer you may need to study. We probably have a hook up for a 5 year visa if we love it that much, but that is not normal.

the cost of living is about half of what I am used to in normal states back home (not Cali/NY), the food quality is amazing. I've been to over 30 countries and the food here is up there with the best of them, all at about half of US prices. The rent is comparable to US rent and is tough to come by during high season, December-April, when it gets very touristy and awesome.

For recreation, I am going cage diving with great whites in a few weeks or next month, it's about $120/person, so real cheap.

They have the famous Table Mountain which I am hiking tomorrow most likely. The nightlife is good, there are lots of wealthy people with pools overlooking the whole city, so network well and get invited.

We rented a car, that is about double the US, if you are living here for a while it is highly advisable to get a car, you can drive up the coast line for insane views of the water

I am not sure on other recreational activities, but I know there is alot offered here, events most weekends/etc, I will reply back once I've done more

The girls are certainly very pretty and friendly here, cannot really comment on the game of them as far as you're asking, but if you do well in the states and are a confident person then you should have no problem here

Watch how much you eat beforehand.

I was sick in the cage.

Still bloody good fun though.

i've gotten my PADI, but i met a few people who did it and told me you don't need the certification, can just hold your breathe, although that may be more difficult when in the cage and having a massive shark heading at you

Hello there! i will be spending 4 months in cape town this spring. i got some questions i would be happy if u tried to answer:

1. how is the diving without the cage diving. is it safe or is there a safety issue with maybe encounter with a white shark while diving?

2. have u visited the grand west casino? which stakes does it offer and is the value good?

3. best fast food chain in cape town?

4.best sushi place?

5. do u feel safe (no problem with jogging around for example?)

thanks in advance

we live at the V&A waterfront and pay about $3500-4k USD a month for a 2 bedroom, keep in mind we live in the nicest complex is probably all of South Africa, Camps Bay is nice, I wouldn't live in the city area, we rent a car but it's like $700 a month, so that's optional, Camps Bay has beach and good nightlife and the trendy younger crowd

1. how is the diving without the cage diving. is it safe or is there a safety issue with maybe encounter with a white shark while diving?

you definitely might encounter one, i haven't done it yet though, i'll post pics after i go in the cage for sure, or video...

2. have u visited the grand west casino? which stakes does it offer and is the value good?

no but it's super low stakes, like $1/$2 no limit, we all play higher than that so we haven't gone yet, we'll hit it up for fun though

3. best fast food chain in cape town?

tons of great eateries, cape town hard food comparable to the US at about half the price, it's pretty insane, great sushi all over the place, had 4 bomb places already

neloson's eye has great steaks and ribs, the waterfront has lots of options, there is a great burger joint on long street, it is slipping my mind right now though

4.best sushi place?

sevruga on the waterfront is good, willaboughy's in the v&a waterfront is good, my roommate knows of more places that are very good

5. do u feel safe (no problem with jogging around for example?)

safety is no issue here if you are intelligent, where we live is super nice/touristy area, if you get in cabs and such or drive around it's fine, just don't venture out walking when you don't know where you are headed, this can lead to dark areas that are very unsafe

thanks in advance mr and have a good day!

don't call me mister, i turn 27 in 3 hours , i sent you facebook info, can look me up and find out stuff/pictures on there

One of the guys that worked on the shark boat I was on was quite happy to go surfing in an area where he had seen a shark an hour earlier. He didn't strike me as being the brightest or most responsible person on the planet but it should illustrate that the chances of being attacked are remote.

My understanding is that they aren't particularly interested in people. If they mistake you for a seal they might bite you then leave you to bleed to death but they probably won't eat you

This was the case with the company I used. They don't use scuba gear as the majority of their customers aren't qualified to use it. You can use a snorkel if you want but I didn't bother. They had a couple of spotters on either side of the boat yelling instructions so that everyone in the cage knew where to look.

Just a couple easy questions:

-I know you already answered this, kind of, but the fine dining in SA - there's lots of choices and variety? Ball park how many nice restaurants are there to choose from?

-Safaris and other stupid touristy things to do - are they all around and easy to take advantage of?

-Are there very nice apartment complexes there for rent? What do these things typically cost per month?

-Are there cool places surrounding Cape Town within a whatever radius that make good day or weekend trips?

Looks sweet. A couple of more questions if you have time

1. Are there tennis courts available to rent? are people playing soccer on the beach? or is it possible/popular to play five a side soccer?

2.Is internet over there reliable? stable enough to grind on? which is the best internet operator?

Thanks in advance

tons of choices, all at about 1/2-3/4 US prices, we can point you to certain places when you are here

-Safaris and other stupid touristy things to do - are they all around and easy to take advantage of?

Kruger is the best in SA I believe, it's far northeast, we are probably going to do it when we go on our end of December trip, i'll post my tr in here or link it, you can fly round trip to JoBurg for it, round trip there is like ~$200, this is africa's biggest attraction(safaris), so if you are here for a while bounce around and check them out

-Are there very nice apartment complexes there for rent? What do these things typically cost per month?

I live in the nicest apartment complex area in all of Africa, so yes there are, i'd rather not post specifics here, you can get any price point here

-Are there cool places surrounding Cape Town within a whatever radius that make good day or weekend trips?

Historic Table Mountain, Stellenbosch and Kirstenbosch (awesome wine regions), cage diving with great whites 90 minutes away, the beautiful scenic coastal route to Cape Point (Africa's most southern point), they have so much to offer here

I can't answer this well, I don't see many courts, I myself have wanted to find a basketball court, I know they have tennis courts at my gym, Virgin Active. I see people playing some little soccer games at the coast, but I have not seen anything competitive, although I'm sure they have that here

2.Is internet over there reliable? stable enough to grind on? which is the best internet operator?

It is by far the biggest downside here, everything in the city is incredible, but we pay ~$200USD/month and it is insanely slow and will disconnect for whole days once every few weeks, they only have 3g here.

Thanks in advance
.

Hey Leminh. If Johnny is not there anymore you can ask me some questions about Cpt. I lived there for 10 years. Have spent just over a year in Tanzania now, but will be returning to CPT soon.
