I am off to France next week and looking at getting myself a 3G dongle when I arrive so I can play poker whilst on the move (i'm gonna be camping out some of the time). The best deal pay as you go deal appears to be through SFR where the charges work out at 9euro per day. However using this rate means a connection limit of 128Kb/s and a max of 75Mb data transfer per day.

I have just worked out that 4 tabling on Ongame uses about 3Mb per hour so there is no problem with total data transfer, but will 128Kb/sec be fast enough to do that?

that's almost dialup.

I would rather pay a couple of euros more and get much better speeds.

New 3G devices should give you a lot faster speeds than that. I use to have a GC82 years ago that was that speed and I could play four tables on Stars but it was annoying and there was lag.

Well I guess I'll try it out and see how I get on. The price works out double for the faster connection so I'll try the cheap option first and just buy the faster topup if it's no good. I'll post results here in case anyone else is interested....

Report back! Am going to France for a month and definitely want a USB dongle as a backup connection and I guess the cheapest way would be pay as you go...

Wow are data costs really that expensive for mobile broadband in Europe?? Or only on prepaid rates. 9E/day for 128Kb/75MB Cap seems super bad

From what I understand so far the pricing system is different in the UK to what it is in France. In the UK we pay for bandwidth and in France you pay for time. UK prepaid is about £15/gb at 3.6Mb max. France is 3euro+/hour for a similar connection. The capped 128kb deal in France will be the cheapest option for grinding, but I will have to see how i cope with any lag.
