I bought the Claro prepaid modem for backup. It has been very reliable but quite expensive compared to other countries in South America, it comes with a few free gigs that you can use the the first 10 days after you buy it. I've been travelling here 2 months now and I had coverage pretty much everywhere.

thank you! Think i'm going to start with movistar although as always latin america has been janky as hell while trying to buy one. movistar store says they wont sell me just a chip, I have to buy the whole modem (already have a very expensive unblocked movistar modem). then they say i need a utility bill to even do that.

then movistar kiosk says they'll sell it to me, but I need to come with a local friend that has a Peruvian ID basically. will def get a claro modem if movistar ends up sucking...

anyways thanks for the input and vote of confidence for claro!

stand up guy and easy transfer with Alvarro, I would for sure recommend to anyone that needs it. 1% vig confirmed

and yeah cash games in Lima just seem like the nut worst idea ever. they have VIP rooms where collusion has happened and outsiders aren't allowed to play, hear about tons of collusion between all the players, hear about spite collusion for gringos or internet grinders (aka people good at poker) because the table doesn't want a new guy to come in and win. doubt i will ever play cash games in lima, which is a shame because there is decent action.

He used to swap money without any vig, but yeah, he now is charging 1%. Glad you could do it, still a good deal I guess.

If a peruvian could come and talk more about the live poker situation I would really appreciate it (maybe where is safe to play or whatever), it used to be nothing like that...

Hello. i found this website http://www.limaeasy.com/peru-info/pe...#items-allowed
it says nothing about PC or monitors. Is it allowed to bring my own pc and monitor (dell 30")?
Thinking about moving to Lima from Europe.

Anybody know a good real estate agent or Spanish teacher ?
Will be moving to Lima in early Feb and plan on staying for at least 3 months.
I looked around online but couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for (apartment wise).

So should 5k USD be enough to set up working internet/nice apartment and live comfortably in Miraflores or Barranco for 4-5 months?

Thanks, is there a skype group of 2p2ers in Peru? If any of you are in Miraflores, could I sublet a couch at your place for a week or so while I get up and running?

Also, if anybody is interested in a possible roommate and already has a place let me know via PM.

fyp and the answer is yes.

miraflores really is better in general. barranco isn't much cheaper at all, has more sketchy parts (and some really rad places as well)...

I'd prefer Surco over barranco in general probably. Went out in barranco last weekend and pisco sours were like $6 compared to $2.50 in centro

I live kiiinda cheap and there is zero way that 5k would last me 5 months here. 1% vig to cashout your pokerstars money for dollars here in Lima as well if the reason you are asking is to bring cash on the plane.

I mean you CAN find housing in a **** area of barranco maybe for like $300/mo, or live with roommates and such...but if you ever go out, eat out, bang out, cruise around, etc...1k/month just won't cut it. that being said locals here prob make $500/month being very generous, so it is obviously possible. Depends on what standards you need. Just commenting because my standards of living/eating/going out are NOT high and there's no way I could live almost anywhere for 1k/month short term (furnished short term housing in a nice area will eat your budget in a heartbeat unless you live in a bigger house with already established roommates)

Thanks. I don't eat out and live solely off groceries. The only things I spend money on are groceries and internet and rent. My main priority is just getting set up in a safe neighborhood. Could I find a small-ass studio in a nice part of Miraflores for 600 USD/mth?

sounds fun - but yeah you could probably make that work. The thing is locals will tell you that of course you can find a place for the amount ur looking to spend, but that's also because they rent unfurnished places with yearlong+ contracts and not always in the touristy part of town. If you speak spanish or have people help you WRT the apartment - probably you'll be able to get by. Ian Abad Alarco is a real estate agent that speaks english down here I met randomly the other day, you could try emailing him at ianabadalarco@live.com or iabad@remax-city.com - he may have a better grasp on what is possible for you. I'm sure you could find a little studio somewhere though.

adondevivir, urbania.pe, airbnb, craigslist, the sunday newspaper would be good places to start looking - although everytime I ask a local whats the best way to find housing they always just say ask around and talk to people. best of luck to ya!

I was just in Lima and the price of rent has gone waaaaaaay up since I was there 2.5 years ago. I was searching for 2 bedroom furnished apartments and most of them were $1400+ in Miraflores and Barranco if you're staying short-term. And I don't think the 1br places were too much cheaper. And usually when I thought I'd found a good deal, it would turn out to be a stale listing.

Am flying into Lima in a month and will be traveling Peru for 2 weeks with the gf. Recommendations for sights, activities, places to stay and all the sort highly appreciated. Also may try to bring a little extra cash to donk around at the casino in Lima if anyone can confirm that's still worthwhile. Maybe even meet up for a drink or live session?

Very recently posted in the poker house thread looking for a spot in Peru, Colombia, Nepal or India, but I'm starting to think Peru is my priority.

I have 1 person on Skype who is interested in moving to Lima around Feb 15th and planning to stay for 2 months. I will be moving late Feb / early March and looking to stay 3-6 months (max). I would definitely consider living in Lima for 3 months, and then moving to maybe Buenos Aires for the next 3 months. I would also be keen to travel most other countries to visit.

Anyone with spare rooms / interested in setting up a place then please message me :-)
