Hi cashme84,

I'm a 21 yo guy from the UK, moved over here to live for 6 months, been here about a month now.

I play for a living, NL400 online. There is a casino but its terrible structure, NL200 $100 max buy-in huuuuge rake. They also spread NL$500 but its a low cap on the buy-in and huge rake again. Standard of play is LOL bad though.

Auckland's a really nice city though, plenty of cool bars and stuff to do.

Shoot me a PM.

Alan

I'm too young to play in the casinos here, but I hear Sky City (The aforementioned casino in Auckland) has very soft games.

How's it going, I'm going to be out in NZ in july and wouldn't mind meeting up with some poker people while I'm there. Are there any other places to play?

Sky City Auckland is pretty soft in my experience, although rakes are pretty high as already mentioned. They have some reasonable buy-in weekly tourny's there from what I remember which could be worth a look. I don't think there are any other card clubs/rooms in Auck's unless some have popped up in the last couple of years. You could probally talk to some of the guys in the casino about finding some home games in Auck's.

Other option is playing down the road in Hamilton, although the casino there is run by the same company (sky city) with the same high rake. Its a fun night out in Hamilton though. If you were there a couple of yrs ago you could of played the prestigous HPT (Hamilton Poker Tour). Unfortunately it has dispanded in the last few yrs.

The most enjoyable place to play in NZ I have found is Christchurch casino. Not a big game selection, and games aren't so soft, but its an enjoyable place to play as the staff and dealers there are very good and there's a good group of local regulars there. Each year in April/May the NZ champs are in Chch, its a good week and well worth the trip there for it.

Other options for live play are Dunedin casino and possibly Queenstown, although I haven't played either location.

I played at StarCity in Auckland about a year and a half ago. As others have stated the rake is horrendous but that is the same as all casinos in NZ and Australia. The games were unreal soft but I would just would just play em while drinking for a social thing.

the "boutique" casino in dunedin (sorry, not sure of its name) was really cool - they got a small 2/3 200NL game going when a few of us asked one wednesday night and the rake was really reasonable and dealer had a laugh with us. not sure what the game would be like in terms of profitablity but the people there seemed real cool. this was backin 2006 though and i suspect things have changed since then.

queenstown starcity was pretty standard, 5/5NL game i think, and rake seemed "normal". cant remember max buy in thoguh. again not sure about profitablity unless a whole load of drunk people came in during holiday season to blow money and have a laugh but if you were in queenstown, spending time grinding out $$$ in a casino would be the last thing i'd think about doing.

also, APPT stop through auckland should bring a little more traffic through the auckland casino and there's word another tour might be starting in the region soon...

bump, I play at sc occasionally. The rake and buyins cause me to play less than I would like. Also have a home game going if people are interested. Stakes vary massively at the home game though depending on who is playing.

Sky City @ Queenstown is pretty horrible as far as structure goes. Unless they've changed it in the past few months, its a $2/5 game, $50(?!) - $200 buyin, and 10% rake capped at $20. They only have 1 table, and I cant be sure that it runs daily

I think that Christchurch clearly has the best run poker in NZ (bias??). Auckland however has a lot more potential, and in my opinion provides a better environment for the casual player. In saying this, I think that their dealers and floor have been pretty bad in general

I lived in Dunedin for a while, and there was a somewhat consistent game going at the casino there. Also one of my favorite casinos that I've been to. Really low key, great dealers, usually always a good time.

hey. I just moved to Auckland from AU, living in freeman's bay, i'd be up for homegames or whatever, or just meeting some of you trippers for a few beers.

I'd be keen for some different homegames as well, let me know if anyone needs some more players.

Played up at Sky City last night. The play is like a homegame but you had better be properly rolled as people are there to gamble... And they LOVE to pay any amount to draw out on you. So don't value bet value bet, just overbet overbet! Rake seemed crazy high and the buy in caps are really low. A $100 cap for $1/2 NL ?? So you can't really play much poker.

Keen for deeper stack home games for some practise. Like $0.50/1 with $100-$200 buy in. Or even $0.25/0.50 with $100 buy in would be good.

There are a lot of apartments available in the city centre, around where the casino is, but a lot harder to find one fully furnished and short term which is what you will be wanting. Serviced apartments and hotels are obv out of your price range. I guess you could pay up front, but Im guessing that a lot of landlords might be wary about a short term tenant from overseas. I will be heading there shortly for a couple of months as well (from Christchurch, NZ) so will be able to update you on what accommodation options I find
