are there any sort of "under the table" jobs one can get while staying in Vietnam? like I know in china theres teaching opportunities and such. I'm a 21 year old canadian and have no higher education than highschool. I'm currently in thailand with about a month left on my visa and I'm exploring options and would prefer going to a country where I can get some sort of side income, my standards aren't too high, just something that would cover about 50-75% of my expenses

I just got here with my Filipina gf and while I hold a single-entry 3 months visa, she only has a 21 day visa. How and where can we extend her for 3 months?

Plan A is to try in HCMC (or Hanoi?) ; plan B is to cross to Laos and both of us get new 3 months visa. Any suggestions? Or someone to contact with extra fees?

For alternative options in Saigon or Nah Thrang, imo you should join an expat group (for one of this city) on fb and ask.

If you do the bus trip to Phnom Penh, yeah you can apply again for a 3 month visa online on the same website that I linked earlier, no problem.

Is there any way to prevent getting your credit card skimmed from using ATMs?
I heard that there are a lot of ATM where the card slot is replaced with a skimmer.
But I noticed a weird a weird withdraw from my cc that I don't recognize because I always use the same ATM.. the withdraw was the usual max amount that you can withdraw from an ATM aka 2million dongs but yeah, the signtature was not the same from the ATM that I always use and I googled the signature and it was used from a hotel's ATM close to the airport.. never been there.

So yeah, I guess I have to cancel my credit card now.. First I'll have to withdraw so I've got enough money to last me until I can ship a new credit card all the way from europe to here.. Any advice for the future on how to deal with this? It's really a pain in the ass.

Luckily I never have a lot of money in that credit card, because just in case I get skimmed so it only had enough to withdraw 2mill dong but that's still $100.

cnsidering moving from Thailand (due to it being more difficult to stay in, more expensive, and less fun than before) from Vietnam. I just went for a couple of weeks with my GF to Hanoi and HCMC, and we both liked it. We hear good things about the central areas. Whats the visa situation like compared to Thailand? Hows the liveability? I have been in Thailand for the better part of the last 6 years, if anyone has any direct comparisons or recommendations I would love to hear them. Also, is the live poker scene to the south any good? I was meaning to hit up their APPT events but it got cancelled.

This thread is dead and I also have quite a hard time to get some feedback... I have only spent 4 months here, but will try my best...

For visa info, if you look back a few pages, it was mentioned that it is easy to get 3 x 3 months extension on your original 3 months entry (get it while flying in Hanoi, da nang or HCMC). As far as live poker goes, I came out empty handed in da nang and Ho Tram , and not sure if the game in HCMC is still very active... You might want to ask around for home games instead, but I am not one to ask. And concerning Central Vietnam, da nang is great, Nha Trang can be interesting for partying and the such.

+1 with Dubnjoy000 for Da Nang and Nha Trang. I never been in Nha Trang but most of the people who visited both cities, told me to have a preference for Da Nang.

I can make you a comparison with Chiang Mai, I have lived in Chiang Mai many years and I am now living in Da Nang. In term of size and population, the both cities are approximately the same.

Da Nang

the +

+ Da Nang is more beautiful (especially Bach Dang street, Han river, the bridges at night, the beach, the sea)

+ the kindness of the locals (not a huge difference with Chiang Mai but overall I think that Da Nang beat Chiang Mai)

+ the criminality. Chiang Mai is safe but imo Da Nang is safer that Chiang Mai. I never saw there in Da Nang international biker gangs, dudes connected with international mafias, not like in Chiang Mai. And there in Da Nang, no bag/mobile snatching, no scam or very few scams, not like in Saigon or Hanoi.

+ visa. More easy and cheaper that Thailand.

the -

- the nightlife. Easy win for Chiang Mai. The nightlife is less developed in Da Nang which is normal because Chiang Mai is way more touristic that Da Nang.

- the expat community. Same that for the nightlife, smaller that in Chiang Mai. There are around 1'000 expats living in Da Nang from what i have heard.

Spoiler:

lovely TR gonzo, many people are feeling the 'heat' in cm and are planning an escape!

tho i cant imagine the nightlife being any worse than cm, 98% of places or more close at midnight, over half the hot nightlife places are full of thai chicks that literally dont speak a word of english, ive never been turned down as much in any venue 55555

Have you been to that small island just outside of hoi an, and only about a cooter hairs distance away from da nang on the map, does it have clear water? like decentish clear ocean swimming or snorkeling/diving type of scenery, even that nicish island near the dirtiest (cheapest bareback pros [500 thb]) city which is patts, called koh larn, was sufficiently clear for me

Thank you both for the great information. I have to say, the night life in Chiang Mai is awful. It used to be pretty good, but now most things are closed at around 22:00, its hard to get food after 21:00, and everything is shut down, almost 100%, at midnight now. The expat community is not nearly as good as it used to be, either. Things have been going downhill rapidly, and I am sure the new tougher visa restrictions will make it much worse.

I am currently planning on staying here another 3 months while my lease is up, and migrating to Vietnam if it is convenient. Has anyone recently acquired a Thai tourist visa in HCMC, na trang, or Da Nang?? I had a hard time there last time, and had to fly to Hanoi to get one single entry one.

As for the live poker, I am really surprised to hear that. When did you try the big strip? It looked very active on facebook, and they had an APT planned there in Nov, even though that got cancelled...

Last question: I am in Chiang Mai: Whats the best way to get to Da Nang from either Hanoi or HCMC?

I had planned to go play the APT in Ho Tram and was quite disappointed when it got cancelled. To be honest, when I went to visit the casino (I was in Vung Tau) and took the free empty bus to get there on a Saturday evening, I omitted to bring my passport, hence not being let in the casino (and getting some direct info on the games). It just didn't seem very conducive for a poker game though, but perhaps you should get more feedback than me :

As far as the game in HCMC goes, I have not checked it out, but reports ITT over the past couple of years is that it is seldom running. Home games seem to be more of the thing (mainly 5-10), but I am not the one to ask. I would love to add a bit of live action to my online grind myself, but have come up empty so far... this said, I have barely asked around.

As far as going from Hanoi to da nang, I believe you are limited to 3 options : flying, bus or train. The plane or the train are roughly the same price, but I prefer the ground option myself, which is comfy, me thinks :

Just make sure to reserve your tickets online at least 4 working days in advance, about 60 US$ from Hanoi-da nang.

I left Chiang Mai/Thailand one year ago, when I say that Chiang Mai beat Da Nang for the nightlife I m speaking about the CM pre coup d'état

For the island, I guess that you are speaking about Cham Island, I have never been there but from what I have heard it's really a nice spot.

Best way to get to Da Nang is from Saigon. For domestic flights in Vietnam, you can book with Jetstar. For the thai tourist visa, I never acquired one in Vietnam but I guess you have only two options, Saigon or Hanoi. I don't think that there you will have a lot of answers, better to check on thai visa http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/...in-the-region/

Landing in HCMC this evening, thanks for the help guys. I think I will fly to Hue and bus back down to HCMC, seeing Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, and back to HCMC before flying back to Bangkok over two weeks. Is this a reasonable approach?
Are there any especially good dentists in Vietnam?
Any hotel recommendations in any of the cities or food spots would be appreciated.

I don't know if you travel alone or with your gf but if you travel with your gf maybe you could make a stop at Da Lat.

For the dentists, I went one time there to remove an wisdom tooth, they made a good job. http://www.danangdentist.com/

For hotel recommendations, imo the best hotel in Da Nang is A La Carte Hotel, I posted some pics from there on the last page, the view from the rooftop bar/swimming pool on the 23th floor is really sick. For cheaper hotels, most of the small hotels near A La Carte or Holiday Beach Hotel. Just be aware that Holiday Beach are building a new hotel next to the original so you better book your hotel not too much close to avoid the noise.

For restaurants in Da Nang, Luna Pub Italian restaurant (the best pizzas in Da Nang with Nha Leo), the Rachel Restaurant (Vietnamese, Japanese & Western food), Waterfront.

If you have time, I would add Vung Tau to desired destinations ; it has a romantic feel to it, especially close to the port, where the locals stroll by in the evening, by the Mekong (only 90 minutes away from HCMC by boat).
