What I meant to say was that you were way off in your assumption that we never go to bars here. Some of us go out almost nightly. But if you're looking for a nightly frat party of 30 poker players aged 19-24 to keep you entertained, this probably isn't the place. We're a small group and we go out together when we can. But we also spend plenty of time doing our own things. Also, whenever we post about having a dinner on here, it is almost always followed by bar-hopping afterwards.

Thanks for the reply.
You're going to HCMC in a few days? We might visit at some point. But atm we're still looking at apartments in Hanoi and trying to get over jetlag.

Hey guys.

Could you tell me how difficult is to live in Vietnam visa-wise. Lets say you get in on a 3month tourist visa you got in Vietnam embassy in States or w/e. What do you do after 3 months? How do you get another visa?

it pretty easy. you can get it renew every 3 month under the table for a fee. I actually recently renew my passport in the state and first thing I did was also get a 5 year visa for Vietnam cost only 120 dollar. I just need to show up at some office every 3 month to get a stamp.

To add to the above post; 5 yr visa is "only available' to people who have vietnamese lineage.

I did what Don does to and just pay approx 10 usd each time. Before that when I was on a tourist visa; I just chained renew for a total of 1.75 years. Was no prob but this was like awhile back. Im not updated on things now but from my understanding is that there will come a time when they will not easily renew anymore unless you want to pay huge bucks.

To answer your question, you can find any visa agent and he will do it for you for a fee. Fee depends so shop around. Phat Man Visa comes to mind as a legit and fair way to go. But ask around, everyone will be able to find someone.

I will second that for Nha Trang : spent 6 weeks grinding it there a couple of years ago and internet, restaurants and nightlife were all solid. Get a USB stick for backup, but I just had to use it once, as the hotel connection was highly reliable.

I've been here two years now, almost exclusively in Saigon although I leave the country every few months to change things up.

I will watch the thread and try to help out with Saigon questions.

Re: Diving.. If you really like diving, you might consider staying in Saigon or somewhere with great net, and then fly 45 minutes to Con Dao and dive there. It's a far off island so the web may or may not be very good, but it's easily accessible for your weekend/week long dive trips.

hello,

Are there any private casino/card club/poker club in vietnam?

I am sure there are some very juicy private games but I would recommend you know the people that invite you very well or be fluent in Vietnamese(cheating can occur). Also the juicy games are usually with rich business man not sure they want "pro" into there game without any incentive for them. Other then that there are one table of electronic table at new world casino. Games fill with mostly regs and some tourist fish usually at 8 pm. But that information is 2 years since I been there.

What's the poker community like in the various cities here? I've been living in Costa Rica for almost three years now and need a change of pace. Apologies if this could be easily found sifting through the thread. I'm pretty wide open to move anywhere in the world so don't really have time to go through every place/thread but Vietnam is definitely near the top of the list.

Poker community is very small here in HCM. Just a handful of people here. And no poker community in any other city in Vietnam as far as I know (although a few individuals living in various cities).

I went there about 6 months ago and I was 4-5 players the first day and zero players the second day. I guess I went there around 2200. I did not stay around too long so the game might have filled up later, but I doubt it.

Pretty horrible for the standard ones and way overprice for a little bit of high quality one. But they are pretty easy to get in the foreigner area. Which kind of surprise me because the penalty for hard drugs like heroin is death if you carry more then 20 ounce while penalty for hundred of kilos of weeds is only a fine.

Game at new Word is still running almost everyday starting 8 pm. Some days not enough players to start. Game is also often played short handed.

I bought mj once way back like 6 years ago. Bought the best quality available through a random street dealer. Worst **** ever. Never bothered again after that.

Looking at HaLong for my next long weekend vacation. Is it worth 3 days or is it an amazing scenic site with only tourist traps around? Money not really an issue. Will be with gf. Thanks.

I think a couple nights on the boat is about right. It kind of depends on what you like. It's very chill and relaxing. But I would probably start to get bored if I stayed more than a couple nights. I assume you'll get on a tour boat that you sleep on. The boat we had had good food and the staff was good. The places they take you are indeed overcrowded with tourists but worth seeing. There may be a big difference in the boat quality from the pictures in the brochure compared with the actual boat. It may be best to ask someone that's been before to see which company they used and how their experience was. Sorry but I don't remember the name of the company we used. Our boat looked terrible from the outside but was clean and well-kept inside.

I went on a one day trip and it was a huge tourist trap. However the kayak trip was nice, even though they tried to charge me extra to visit a cave (cave fee), lol.

Book from sinh cafe (but be aware of fake sinh cafes).
