Considering spending some time in Vietnam. a few q's.

Is Hoi Ahn a place suitable for a 1-2 month stay or is it too boring? I'd go to nha trang - but not sure I like hearing that inebriated tourist men can get into trouble late at night there, as I certainly fit the bill.

I'm assuming internet is ok for these places to grind?

piepounder- Hoi An is a nice small town. Very quaint. There's one cool bar there (It's actually very fun, with pool, chess, drink specials, and a bunch of cool people from around the world to meet every night. I forget the name of it, but it's some sort of communist name, which is ironic because it oozes capitalism).

After a few days, you may be a bit bored. Or not, and you may find the quiet relaxing. If you do get bored, however, it should be easy to move just 30 minutes north to DaNang, or a bit farther even to Hue, both of which offer different foods and sights.

It absolutely depends on the hotel in which you are staying with regards to internet. Some hotels might have good internet, others might be too unreliable. It's sort of a crapshoot.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Looking into visa stuff today...I know how to get 3 month visa from the embassy in Canada..no prob. But I'm reading you can get 3 month visa on arrival from some online services? Are these legit services? Seems they may be less hassle and cheaper then mailing to the nearest embassy in Canada (139$, 5 working days to turn around, + shipping passport to/from embassy and hoping it returns to me in time).

thx

Myvietnamvisa.com and others are totally legit, used them many times in the last couple years. I've only done the one month online and just renewed each month. I'm not sure you can get a 3 month with the online sites, 3 month is a business visa online. If you find how to do it online, pm me or post cuz planning on going start of the year and can't find online option for 3 month.

If you forget you passport photo they will take you picture for 5 bucks @SGN airport, just bring the form they email you.

I was in hoi an for 1 week earlier this year and this was more than enough.. cool place but mainly just for shopping/markets. having said that I preferred hoi an to da nang.

thanks!

How do you renew each month? I saw that you can do 1 month extension going through travel agent / they send off passport etc, but my interpretation was you could only do that once, then you had to leave country to get another visa on arrival. ??

Myvietnamvisa seems to offer 3 month single entry - perhaps this is new. I'll be trying it out soon enough I guess.

Also can anyone tell me what areas in Saigon people normally stay? Any 3* hotel recommendations?

Poker dinner on Tuesday night 8pm, followed by club night.

If you have plans, cancel them. To celebrate the founder of this thread, who's leaving Vietnam on Wednesday.

I was told where we're having dinner, but do not remember. I'll update with details on where to meet.

Yeah take it to travel agent and they do it for you, you can do it again and again. Most I've done is 3 or 4 months in a row. District 1 is the spot, just hit agoda.com and find a deal.

Had the passport in the pocket, I did get a 3 month visa from myvietnamvisa before, wouldchalookatthat.

I use a visa company here. Can get 3 month single-entry visa extension for $25. Multiple entry 3-month visa is about $85 (last I tried - prices can vary from month to month). You might save a couple bucks if you go to the official government office but I've not tried there. PM me if you want his contact info.

Hey I'm a poker player, and rode my bike from europe to SE asia. I'm soon in Vietnam, where I'll have a rest, and maybe grind a bit. Would be nice to meet some players, have some beers, maybe crash on a couch (if you use Couchsurfing I can send proper requests)

Went to New World Hotel's casino a few weeks ago (I visit HCMC about once a month) and was told there hasn't been a poker game in 1 or 2 months.

I'll be in HCMC again Dec 3 to Dec 6 (leaving afternoon of Dec 6). If a few of you want to get together for a live game in the casino let me know! I hope we can get a game going!

Has anyone had any experiences going out the hostess type bars out here? I've been to tons of Karaoke Bars, Girl Bars, and Go-Go's in Thailand but not sure how things work in Ho Chi Minh.

Hi,

I am planning to visit HCMC beginning of January (4days) in order to get a new Thai visa, got a few questions.

Should I stay in District 1? Do you know a hotel with good internet and good location?
Is there a casino with live games? How is it?
It seems like there's not much go-go type of place, where should I go to try Vietnamese women safely?

Wow impressive I've always dream of making that kind of road trip. Do you have any blog to show your trip? Which way did you come?
