Was smooth sailing for me with minor hick-up. Land lines are everywhere. Like most households have them because its cheaper than mobile. I used my land lords landline. They called me at ****ing 4 in the morning.

Oddity. On my computer, I can load facebook on my wifi but not when its plugged in by cord. Its from the same internet modem. Can anyone explain why this may be?

Use tor for facebook. It is blocked in the majority of Vietnam, but you do have access periodically in HCM for some reason. But with tor, it becomes a non issue.

Some internet providers do a weak form of blocking facebook (I suppose at the government's request) in their DNS servers (DNS servers translate the name www.facebook.com to numerical IP address 173.252.110.27). They usually block facebook.com but not m.facebook.com which is what a smartphone uses to access facebook. Not sure exactly why it's different if you are using the same network and the same computer, but there's some complexities with the DNS caching and maybe with your router.

You can set up your computer to use Google's public DNS servers to get around this. This is what I do. https://developers.google.com/speed/...dns/docs/using

Perhaps you already did something like this for your wifi connection but not your wired connection?

I've lived here almost 3 years and yet to meet anyone that has a land line in their home/apartment. Granted, most of my friends here are foreigners and youngish Vietnamese girls that don't live with their families (and they all seem to have about 3 mobile phones so a land line seems a bit redundant). I'm guessing a family home is much more likely to have a land line though.

I ended up waiting for my call from Stars in a bar (my 2nd home - some would argue it is my first home). They ended up calling about 4-5 hours after they said they would. Perhaps they aren't as strict now and maybe they will let you use a mobile phone. Not sure if they will go to the trouble of verifying that it is indeed a land line if you just gave them your mobile number.

Stars can be d*cks when trying to convince them that you are staying here though. You need one or possibly more of the following - copy of lease in your name, some kind of bill in your name with your address, and/or Vietnamese bank statement. They probably have to call you on the phone too (when I did it, it had to be a land line which was really hard to find in Vietnam and then sit and wait for them to call).

Your questions are well discussed throughout this thread.
Thank you for the advice! Is it easy to get money transfered from my HSBC account to my american bank account? or do I want to get cash?

Open a Euro account and a VND account. I think Stars requires transfers here be in Euros so that is a necessity. I believe there are no limits on what you can transfer out from your Euro account (i.e. Stars -> HSBC Euro account -> US bank account) as long as it didn't touch your VND account before. Money that goes to your VND account has some limits on what you can transfer out.

Nha trang sounds great. Any info on nicer serviced apartments or condos?

Was initially only considering serviced apartments in saigon, but now am interested in long term condos as well if anyone can recommend.

Hey guys,

I'm looking at serviced apartments here in Vietnam, but I'm now beginning to think of renting a house. Get some high speed Internet, hire a maid/chef to live in the house (keeping us productive at printing money online)

Any poker players have any interest in a room in a poker house in HCMC?

There's a tournament running. Might be private, I'm not sure. I was just seeing if anyone on this thread was going to go as well. I hear there's a $2/$4 cash game going on too, if anyone wants to check it out/needs a change of scenery. Do you still have the same phone number?

I know poker money sent into your VN account can be sent out as long as you do not touch it but does anyone know if it can be sent to anyone outside of VN or does it have to be an account with your name?

I assume it can be anyones account but I would like get an affirmation before I try to get it done in case I run into "problems".

Thank you.

I am 100% sure you can send money abroad to a personal account on any name you want, all you need is name and account number, bank name and bank adress. But if you want to send money to a company account thats impossible unless you have an invoice, among other documents to provide. Thats actually why you cant send money to a pokersite from Vietnam since it would not be a personal account and a pokersite will not give you any kind of invoice. Also when I went to Macau 1.5yrs ago I could not send money directly to the casino (again, company account) and had to bring cash.

Yes, banking laws in Vietnam are completely ridiculous.
