Realize there's been some TJ info scattered in the Rosarito thread and Skype Group - seeing as several people already live in TJ, and at least one more is moving there next week (), figured it would be a good time to create a thread dealing with TJ stuff specifically.

Where to live, different neighborhood info, etc. (Zona Rio, Zona Centro, Agua Caliente, Colonia Libertad, etc.)

Restaurants, grub spots, shopping, bars (the kind that only serve drinks), other places that serve drinks ()

Border crossing stuff specific to San Ysidro/Otay Mesa. I'm planning on living in San Diego and doing a lot of daily commuting using the Sentri Pass, anyone other SoCalers doing something similar?

Tijuana Xolos soccer!! http://xolos.com.mx/

Local casinos to bet sports, drink, maybe even play poker. Someone wrote a trip report up a couple years ago about playing the PokerTek machines at the Caliente Racetrack. http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...14&postcount=7

Has anyone golfed at Tijuana Country Club?

Anthony Bourdain recently did an episode on TJ that touched on the transformation/reinvention it's going through post-9/11 & cartel wars.

Anything else for discussion.

Gogogo!!!

Let's get some taco porn up in this b-tch.

Place called Tacos Walter near the Walmart on Agua Caliente. Asada grilled right in front of you, with avocado, pinto beans, onion and cilantro. 3 there plus 2 to go, bill was 68 pesos (?) and paid 80. Had lots of parking in the back, even though it was a small place.

Went to taco alley today (Las Ahumaderas) that was one of the spots Anthony Bourdain went. Also turned out to be 2-for-1 day

Tacos Adobada (al pastor)

And 2 Vampiros which were asada & chorizo on a tostada-ish dried out/crispy tortilla with melted cheese. Was pretty damn good.

Easy in, easy out. 50 pesos total (2-for-1 on the adobada tacos), tipped $1. I think putting on weight might be an issue here

Hey, Gramps. So are you renting a room in Tijuana to play poker or do you have apartments, both in San Diego and Tijuana, where you can commute to and from each place, whenever you want?

Si, have had an apt in TJ for a few weeks and moving into my SD apt. next week. Going to commute M-F mostly for a SNE+ grind, probably a few hours later than a normal work schedule most days coming & going to avoid traffic.

Plus, it's a reverse-commute from all the people who live in TJ and work in the SD area. LolWhatIsThatGringoDoingAments.

Thanks. I was planning on doing something like that, once I finish school on the East Coast, but to be honest I didn't think it would be feasible with the hassle of paying for two apartments, crossing the border everyday, getting to work on time etc.. So, if you don't mind, how much are you paying for both apartments and do you have a PT/FT job right now?

It depends. I'm overpaying on both sides of the border, but I've played a lot of poker for a long time, am planning on doing so going forward, and am putting a premium on time saved/security. I think if you pair up with another grinder or two, there's no reason you couldn't do it for $1k + bills. +/-, depends on how cheap/nice you want to go on both sides.

I just picked the NewCity towers that are 3 minutes from San Ysidro with good security, and are (over)-priced accordingly. Having driven around Zona Rio and along Agua Caliente, there seem to be some apartment towers and areas w/in 10 minutes of the Border that would work, I just don't have any insight into specifics there.

Maybe some TJ native will wander into this thread and can comment. Having secure parking where you can comfortably walk to your car without looking over your shoulder late at night seems to be the issue (I mean that in a non-paranoid way, I've lived in big cities and walked through iffy areas at night solo plenty of times).

It also wouldn't be too bad to go to North Rosarito, San Antonio Del Mar, Playas de Tijuana, etc. and just make your trip ~15 minutes longer each way. Plus if you pay your taxes, etc., those miles are deductible (and toll if you make it that far South).

Yeah, thanks again. I've been keeping tabs on the Rosarito Thread, but I was interested in someone trying to balance a normal/working life in the U.S., while trying to grind poker across the border as well.

The NewCity towers would be my first choice for renting a room, as it has several enticing accommodations and is right near the border. As far as choosing to live in Rosarito, I think it would be too far of a drive everyday.

The plan is to land a full-time job (real) in San Diego or in the surrounding area, and grind out SNE in Tijuana after work, six/seven hours a day.

1/4 of paycheck in san diego jobs is in Sunshine Dollars since everyone wants to live there. GL with the job hunt.

Are you guys really considering a daily commute thru san ysidro border crossing by car? Anyway to get a mexican cell phone contract and get coverage in an apt on this side of the border?

I lived in sdiego and used to make reg trips to the sportsbook downtown tj. Its been a long time ago though. Walking the border + taxi a little less hassle but took longer in general than driving across. That border wait is hard on the car.

Hey good luck, be safe.

Holy crap, that would be a super-sick work ethic. The lines going North are supposed to be longer in the earlier a.m. with weekday TJ-to-SD commuters, but I'm on too much of a poker schedule to have ever checked that out.

I went to that Caliente casino (walking distance from San Ysidro) last night to check it out. Made a bet on the MNF game and used pesos, they converted it on my ticket to dollars at a semi-crappy rate (I guess use USD next time). Started using my crappy Spanish and got wtf looks from people who spoke back in perfect, somewhat annoyed English.

Took the Eagles, so at least don't have to pay the winners tax!!

That game is going to be sick, I wish I had tix. Heard a bunch of honking and chanting Sunday night, thought there was some protest going on or something. Then realized the chants were, "Xo-los, Xo-los..."

That stadium must have been absolutely insane around the 90th minute+. Good for the Xolos, good for the "normal" people of TJ to have something to rally around/build some community through.

I've been thinking about doing the same Gramps. I've been splitting my time in Rosa and SD for the last year and I'm getting tired of it. I have sentri, so I can be back to my house in 25 min. It seems New City is the only real option. How are you liking it?

Nice, so far it seems good for it's purpose. Easy in, easy out, seems secure, just had to be more proactive getting a place and setting everything up. I don't know that they're overly picky, and yet I suspect they might not rent to a gringo who showed up and didn't present himself half-way well. Or maybe I'm just their token gringo and that's it .

I mean, there has to be other good options within ~10 minutes. Even just up the hill from the Linea Internacional it looks like there's apartment buildings that could be nice/secure enough. Plenty of apt. buildings right near NewCity as well, just the gates to the various parking spots are often wide-open at night when I've driven by on my way to the US.

Hopefully a TJ native or two will wander in this thread eventually and can comment one way or another. I'd also imagine Miguel from the Rosarito thread has some TJ contacts (I think he lives there too?).

Lol, glad it doesn't rain here much. Half an inch and there's "street lakes" everywhere.

Some people have been getting very wet walking the sidewalks the last couple days, that I'm sure of.

Hi guys
I posted around October about renting a house in Tijuana. I haven't posted since then because a few things came up and I figure I would wait until after the holidays. I recently move into the house and I am looking for roommates. I will soon post more information and hopefully some pictures of the place. I have 3 rooms available and can make two more rooms since the house as plenty of room available. I apologize for the limited information, I just wanted to start posting so people would know that I have rooms available.
A little about me: I was born in San Diego but grew up in Tijuana. I move to San Diego to go to school when I was 18. I made it all the way to San Diego State University when I decided to make a drastic career change to play poker. I am now 33 and playing online poker in Tijuana. GO FIGURE!!! Lol.
I am hoping to get some good roommates that know how to play. I am also hoping that the people that are willing to move in are willing to share knowledge of the game.
If anyone is interest please Email me at payito2k@yahoo.com

Hey guys.

I recently took some pictures of the house but I have no idea on how to upload the pictures to thread. I wanted to point out that the house is a fixer upper place. I rented the house because the owner gave me a great deal. She is willing to work with me on anything the house needs to get fix. She is willing to deduct anything I put into the house to make it more appropriate for living conditions. "The house is not in that bad of a shape but wanted to point out just in case any high maintenance person wanted to come here. THIS HOUSE IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR”. What I mean from this, is I can fix anything that needs to get fix, I CAN’T demolish the house and make a new one. I CAN’T make a pool or anything lucrative and expect her to deduct months or years from the rent.

I got more information available about the house and the rooms I have available. However, my limited knowledge about computers and how all the options on this thread work have me handicap on what I can post. If anyone wants any information please Email me to payito2k@yahoo.com.

I would appreciate any tips on how to upload the pictures to the thread. I would also appreciate any suggestions on what information I should provide on the thread that will give anyone that needs a room or two a more clear idea on what is going on with the house, rooms or any information about me that is related to being roommates.

A few things that I really wanted to point out about the house.
1. Top 3 neighborhoods in Tijuana, in my opinion it is 2nd best with 1st being located just a few blocks away.
2. Gated Cul-de-sac
3. Great view of the City

Thanks in advance to anyone that is willing to help or join me on this journey.

I just wanted to post that I spoke to Dmexican for about 1.5 hrs on Skype today, did a lot of messaging & saw a lot of pics of the place. He seems to be a good dude IMO so far, house has sick views, it is a fixer as he said, has some good stuff goin already & lots of potential imo. After speaking to him and seeing said pics I plan to be down there n a week or 2 to check it out & stay assuming everything works, IMO seems cool all the way around!

Hi guys
Tijuana house renting rooms.
Hi guys, I am still working on uploading the pictures on the thread. I just wanted to post that “big bwalz” has rented a room from me and will be helping me answer any questions or concerns anyone may have. I am renting the rooms for $200.00 + Bills +$300 for deposit. I am asking for $300 deposit because I don’t want to get screwed with utilities. I am looking for long term roommates at least a 4 month commitment. The rooms are not furnished. I wanted to point out that “big bwalz” show up with only CA ID and I was able to help him set up his account with Poker Stars with in 3 days. And now that I know now to set up the Poker Stars account, I would think it would only take me one working day and the time Poker Stars takes to verify the documents.

If anyone wants more information PM me
