sick, sick weather here!!!! i can't believe it's really january still (unless i was in some kind of time warp on the plane and no one has told me that it's really the end of may already)...so that's a plus, just coming from euroland, and the east coast...and the views and beaches are really as amazing as they look in all the photos on rentinginmexico.com !!! and on that note, i'd like to thank everyone again for recommending Miguel as a realtor! he is incredibly friendly, and helpful, and in the ~24hours that i have been here now, has shown me quite a variety of available rentals, in a number of different locations in the rosarito area. he even bought me lunch shortly after i arrived here, and after we looked at a few places! the places we looked at all me my criteria, and at this point i think i have more options than i expected to, including possibly staying long term with uncfan, who is also a really good guy, and has been incredibly helpful thus far also!! big thanks to him!!! ..now i just have to figure out whether i'm going to bring my girl (dog) here, and where i want to stay, but another big thanks to Miguel for dropping me off at telcel today, and getting me setup w/ an aircard, so either way i will be on the virtual felts again tomorrow, hoping to rungoot, and hoping you guys all do the same! ...hoping, and looking forward to meeting some of the other guys down here soon! Quick heads up, anyone coming down here, if you CAN, get a passport card. The books DO work but technically you are supposed to have the card to use that medical fast lane (which I highly recommend). I've gone back to the US once so far, took the fast pass and passed probably 1/2 a mile of cars waiting maybe about 2 hours or so of wait and was in the front of the line in about 12 minutes. The way the medical fast pass takes you you are supposed to have the card though not the pass port book. The guy let me through though, but I don't know if I will get so lucky next time.

Mail in the forms with payment and you get it.

I went to the post office and got mine, it took about a month to get it though.

You don't need a passport card to use a Fast Pass which is what it makes it sound like you are saying. I've used Fast Passes like 3 or 4 times.

You are supposed to have the card for the Ready Lane, dunno if you are talking about that.

Hello:

Tonight some guys and I are going to the Argentinian Steakhouse in TJ around 7-8 p.m. and then to "La Sexta St." to have some drinks. The idea is to be back in Rosarito before midnight but in TJ you never know.

If interested PM back in order to coordinate the logistics.

Warm Regards......Miguel 664-321-7461

Miguel:

What is pechuga de pavo? Literally seems like ham from turkey, but I'm not sure how that works exactly or if it is right. Some guys trying to get turkey from places have reported ending up with what seems like ham and I'm not sure if this is what they are ending up with?

I assume "pechuga de pavo" is the thing to ask for if you want turkey breast, right?

Yes "pechuga de Pavo" means "Turkey Breast" and usually down here is refereed to a Ham.

If you are looking for the Whole Turkey I will recommend "Soriana Supermarket" in TJ.

The problem for me was, the way they want u to do it is by mailing in your passport if you have the book already and waiting a few weeks. I went in to a place that was supposed to have them ready right away, but even then they woudln't print it for a few days. And then their printer was broke. So i paid expadite fees to still get it in the mail. But at least this way they gave me back my passport since I was obv going to need it in the mean time.

Really? I came through that 3rd lane with the barrier around it, pulled over on the left by the guard with the gate and got through. Drove through the alley until I got back in the line, and then when I did the guard told me that all the lines on this side of the cones (i couldn't get on the other side I dont think) were for passport card only, but he let me go through anyway, but not sure if they always would.

So where did I make a wrong turn? I got through in about a total of 12 minutes and there were a TON of cars in line, so hoping to go that route every time.

Just downloaded and read through the cliff notes guide since I'm coming down Wednesday. Very helpful! Thanks for posting it!

Quick question about cellphones(didn't see anything on them) - does att work down there? Anybody know the fees? Or are people just buying burners/getting mexican cell plans?

Call ATT and get the "Viva Mexico" plan...you get a good number of minute for both USA and MX for one price if that's what you want (I think I pay like $89 for 1350 minutes). Texting is still $.50 (but you can get What's App on the iPhone for $.99 for wifi texting).

The ATT rep might not know about the Viva Mexico plan and try to sell you a worse international plan, but it exists and it seems to be by far the best deal offered by a US cellphone carrier.

Here the complete info: http://www.northbajasales.com/2009/0...miguel-sedano/ for ATT Viva Mexico Plan and Options. Keep in mind that if you have a plan with Data, Data Roaming is not included. (and very expensive in MX)

Thanks Shaniac. I just found that plan on the att site after posting and figured that's what I'd end up with. I'm assuming that $89 is only for your calling plan and not your data plan? Is the reception at least decent?

I can't see how you guys spend so much of cell phones. My US plan is $25 a month for like 300 min, unl data/text on an Android phone.

Here I just got a cheap phone for like $10-20 from TelCel and use maybe 50 min a month and my credit expires before I can use it. I pay 100 pesos every 2 months for new credit to keep the line active. Don't really need data in Mexico.

Have a Google Voice number that people in the USA can call/text if they want to talk to me.

Total monthly cell bill for USA smartphone and Mexican cheap phone: < $30

Then again, I'm not someone who needs the latest and greatest of everything.

TheMete - Which company do you go through for your us phone?

I was just planning on going your route with the cheap TelCel route but if I can keep my number and have one phone that works in the US and Mexico for $55 a month I feel it's worth it.

Ya that's not such a bad deal, especially if you move around a lot between the two countries. Right now people have to know which phone of mine to call depending on where I am or just try both.

US phone is Virgin Mobile. I think the plan is $35/mo now instead of $25/mo but I'm grandfathered in. Pretty sweet since they don't have contracts that they let me keep the old price.

Figured I'd update on the cellphone thing for anyone else who makes the move in the future. I just got back from the att store and they said the viva mexico plan is only for people who live in the US and makes calls to Mexico, which actually makes sense. They said you'd still pay the international rate for any calls placed from Mexico.

So I'll most likely do like metetrown and get get a phone down there and look for a super cheap plan here in the us.

Had a TON of dolphins in the waters just in front of our balcony. My wife managed to snap a good pic of them riding a wave and playing around.
