i love the area down by the coast/bay on
la avenida pedro loyola. stop in at
tacos puebla for food, you won't be disappointed.
ensenada is pretty cool because the city is in very good shape overall and doesn't really have (m)any heavily rundown areas. the north side up by the hills north of
el centro (downtown) might be the priciest part of town, but likely still very affordable, and if you're only looking to stay for a short bit (days/weeks), i know a guy over at
adanesne apartments just a couple blocks east of tacos puebla/la avenida PL by the super soriana, and i'll put you in touch with him if you want- i took my wife down there last year to visit and we rented a little apartment from him for 4-5 days, was great.
the only major drawback, practically speaking, for gringos headed down to ensenada is that you basically have to know some base level of spanish.
if you want to explore the city i'd say start with la avenida PL and el centro, and just kinda work your way out. as a general rule, the further south you go (towards maneadero, past costco), the poorer it starts to get. and i've spent a lot of time down there, you shouldn't fear for your safety or anything like that.
if you have a woman or man down there with you, don't pass on the opportunity to drive up to the vineyards.
