What is my best option for reliable internet in Mexico? Any thoughts on regular internet vs 4-G or a good setup for a router with a failover would be appreciated

i used telnor in ensenada with zero problems

around that same time, grinders in rosa were complaining about crappy internet with telnor, so idk. might just be an infrastructure issue since ensenada is like 4-5x the population/size of rosarito

It depends on your location, Izzy, Telnor, Yinyer would be your best options if available in your area, speaking of Baja Norte.

Winet and rosarito wireless where these options are not available. I have found that recently they have upgraded their antenna's and such and have been very solid options.

There is also quickspeed, I have spoken to people that have used this option, and were very happy with it (non poker players) but I have no personal experience with it.

Telnor is very solid, I had them when I lived at Calafia, the problem is usually in these gated communities, where the guards and maintenance people have control over the wiring, I found that every time a new resident would move in, our internet would go to ****..I believe that the guards/maintenance people were stealing our internet to hook these people up for a fee, either that or they unhooked ours by accident (which is the story we got)

And yes it is usually due to ****ty wiring, etc...Telnor would get so many complaints of ****ty service, which was not on their end at all, they won't even service Calafia anymore, this may have happened in other communities as well.

Room with private bathroom (across the hall) available in a spacious 2 bedroom 2 1/2 bath, 2 story home.

Beautiful Ocean and city views right from your bedroom, and throughout the home. Off street gated parking.

The home is off the beaten track, quiet, tranquil, but still conveniently located 10-15 minutes to the freeway, the beach, restaurants, downtown Rosarito, etc..

pm for more information, photos, etc..

Gonna make another try at establishing residency down there to get online affairs in order. Any rooms available (TJ and Ensenada OK)? I'd like to just stay a few months in order to get online squared away and would like to avoid a long lease... though of course I'll need to get some kind of lease to show the sites.

Also, is it straightforward taking an uber directly to Rosa from the border?

Thanks for the info man. What neighborhood do you recommend if I wanted to check out Ensenada for a couple of months?

They've cleaned up the taxi situation @ San Ysidro quite a bit by banning the yellow cab co. (the one that used to try & carve out pickups only for themselves, & physically assaulted a number of Uber & other drivers), so now there's an orderly lineup of taxis going back 1/4+ mile.

It is chaotic & would probably still walk to Pueblo Amigo casino/Caliente Sports Bar/Casino or somewhere nearby & order an Uber from in front there. Or if you have luggage, take a short ride somewhere to eat first (paying the cabbie a decent gringo tax fare for the long Border wait), then Uber on leg 2.

i love the area down by the coast/bay on la avenida pedro loyola. stop in at tacos puebla for food, you won't be disappointed.

ensenada is pretty cool because the city is in very good shape overall and doesn't really have (m)any heavily rundown areas. the north side up by the hills north of el centro (downtown) might be the priciest part of town, but likely still very affordable, and if you're only looking to stay for a short bit (days/weeks), i know a guy over at adanesne apartments just a couple blocks east of tacos puebla/la avenida PL by the super soriana, and i'll put you in touch with him if you want- i took my wife down there last year to visit and we rented a little apartment from him for 4-5 days, was great.

the only major drawback, practically speaking, for gringos headed down to ensenada is that you basically have to know some base level of spanish.

if you want to explore the city i'd say start with la avenida PL and el centro, and just kinda work your way out. as a general rule, the further south you go (towards maneadero, past costco), the poorer it starts to get. and i've spent a lot of time down there, you shouldn't fear for your safety or anything like that.

if you have a woman or man down there with you, don't pass on the opportunity to drive up to the vineyards.

re: knowing spanish, i'm gonna just put this out there because i'm sure there are some of these types lurking this thread still, but man, if you're going to mexico for anything other than like a 2 day tourist jaunt to cancun or something, and you cant at least speak a base level of spanish, then that makes you a huge ****ing dick. so don't be surprised when you get little to no respect from locals, with your stereotypically entitled, boorish american ass.

not a good look, at all.

it really depends where you walk across at. if you cross into mexico at pedwest (outlet malls on US side) versus the old san ysidro border (trolley station), there are a few designated uber pickup zones which are very clear on the map. the main gate of chaparral also has a line dedicated for just ride share. i also feel like this border is much faster to cross into mexico at, as most people either dont know it exists yet, or are using the trolley and have to use the other one

if you're crossing in at san ysidro (trolley station), once you get into mexico, just walk across the street and go to the corner opposite of farmacia millenia about 20 meters in front of the taxis. that's where ubers are supposed to pick up

(I cross regularly on foot and use ubers)

Awesome, thanks man. I actually prefer somewhere where less English is spoken. I'm taking Spanish classes, but I need to actually use it in everyday life which is easier if their English is worse than my Spanish. I was in Cabo for a while, but I had to move since as soon as they heard me speak Spanish they would switch to English hehe. Let me know if you in Ensenada come spring and I'll by you some tacos

Got a new apartment but all utilities included.. Any recommendation for an easy bill to get? Was thinking maybe just add a second internet line. What would be the best company for that around here?

Hello All...seeing if there are any rooms for rent in/around Rosarito area. I would prefer somewhere near/on the beach and gated. I have lived there for years before. I am looking for 3-6 months to start. I am clean, organized, keep to myself usually and 420 friendly. I have buddies down there already, but they have living situations already. Send me a PM if you have or know of anyone that has an open room in a decent to nice place. Thanks.

I've done most of the residency process from start to finish now. It's pretty straight forward and you have to start off by going to the Mexican consulate in San Diego. Maybe there's a way around it but from any normal perspective you're better off getting the 180 tourist visa there then going for temp residency afterwards if you plan to continue doing business in MX.

If you really don't want to do that, just go to a banking district, like paseo chapultapec area or whatever, spend all day walking from branch to branch to branch until one lets you in with your credentials you have on you which may or may not happen at the end of the day.

Banking has gotten pretty official in the past number of years so not even "hook ups" are typically able to by-pass legal measures at this point. Blame the us government, probably.

Thanks for the write up. Have made it around to a few banks now and the good news is they've all sent me away very quickly so it doesn't take much time at all. On that note if anyone wants to buy some Stars, 888, or BTC for cash in Rosa just PM.

In other news I've been going to the same restaurants over and over again. Any tips? I like places that are full of mexicans rather than gringos.

By far my favorite so far is La Cazuela de Mole.. Chillaquiles with Mole and steak for breakfast... oh yeah.

I've been struggling to find seafood like I've had in Enseneda. In particular I love those red clam ceviches from the street carts down there. Is anything like that around in Rosa? I only see Clamato preparations nearby and Clamato is full of sugar and kind of gross.

yo sterling, popotla is more of the local seafood spot you'd prob be into. It's a fishing village with restos lined up serving fresh whatever. Tacos baja jr is good ass seafood tacos. mongolian grill always had a spot in the repertoire. Susanna's isn't mexican at all but is bomb, same with frenchie resto el bistro. 3-4 decent steakhouses, tapanco was my favorite. been like 8 years since I started this thread/lived there, things def could have changed but I doubt by much lol and yaqui's like bustu says is the local favorite, you still there man? gonna go back for a bit this summer, will be like a time machine seeing the old familiar faces and places

puerto nuevo - lobster village, used to be awesome like 15+ years ago, anytime I'd gone more recently they were always trying to upcharge as its a popular tourist/trip advisor type spot. Used to be able to pick your own lobster and have em throw in tequila and weed for free and it was like $10 per person, not sure if that's still the case
