I'd strongly recommend against longboarding down here... sidewalks and road conditions are pretty loltastic. Go ahead and try but I think it'd be a huge fail.

For credit cards - they will work only at major venues, like huge grocery stores (although you may be subjected to a bad exchange rate). Most places like restaurants, smaller places and even some smaller internet shops take cash only.

Anyone know of an HSBC branch in Rosarito. This address is listed on HSBC site:

BLVD. BENITO JUAREZ NO. 20000 , CENTRO , ROSARITO , ROSARITO , BAJA
CALIFORNIA NORTE CP: 22710

I enter it into Google maps and my GPS and nothing.

Any tips on using GPS in Mexico, the address structure seems to be a lot different than the US.

It's on the main street, i've seen it a few times. Just keep driving 'till you see it, it's pretty clear to spot since it's pretty isolated by itself. Best advice i can give Lol

Do you enjoy spanish telenovelas? If so, they got it covered.

Seems like there's plenty of access to US satellite. I know you can set it up to get san diego TV + whatever extra stations you want. I guess we even have direcTV but I don't care enough to set it up...our dish is pointing the wrong way or something.

Assuming I don't have a vehicle in southern California, and will be flying in from Oklahoma... What is the most cost effective way to get to Rosarita and about how much will it cost?

Flights to Tijuana seem expensive and I'm guessing cabs from SD-Rosarita are pretty expensive as well.

I'm looking at setting up a place and splitting time between OK and Rosarita. Thanks!

300-400 bucks isn't too bad imo

from what i've read van type transport from sd to rosarito would be ~100ish

Ha,

I'm in your exact scenario and just finished a ton of research. What I ended up with:

Flying into San Diego, renting a car, driving across the border

Renting a car at about $220 every 2 weeks
Mexican laibility insurance at about $200/yr
Collision/Comprehensive coverage with my Visa credit card for free*

That way I have a car to get around Rosarito with. Unless you live downtown, it really sucks not having a car. And your options even if you do live downtown are an hour on public transit to the Mexico border and then a $15-20 cab ride from the border to Rosarito. A cab from San Diego to the border is like $50.

If you are truly going to split your time and aren't totally busto this is what I would go for. It also allows you to live farther from downtown which gives you cheaper rents.

If you are living downtown or have someone whose car you can borrow, then either cab/public transit to the border and then cab to Rosarito.

* Visa only provides coverage on rentals up to 15 days. If you are planning on staying longer consecutively just get full Mexican cover for a few hundred more per year. You also might want to consider buying a cheap used car.

I am pretty sure that most rental car companies will not let you rent a car and drive it across the border

Driving down first thing tomorrow morning....

Very weird, but I'm not excited, I'm actually angry. It has been building up over the last few days. I have to leave my family and friends and move abroad to make a living. Just thinking about it pisses me off even more.

Real quick....

My realtor told me to not get my FMM visa when I drive down tomorrow. I will have electronics and he said it's not worth the risk to pay fees at the border. He recommended going back another day. I'm really lazy, anyone have to pay duties when they crossed and got their FMM?

Not true. I called and asked and was told it's fine. Obviously do your homework.
