havent had a chance to read thru the whole thread but had some questions

my main concern is traveling. if i were to drive down, then every other week drive back up for a few days, then back down, anyone know what wuld happen to me at the border? assuming they wouldnt like that but idk....
also, is it really safe? im a 22 year old white guy that looks 16 and heard way too many horror stories about driving thru mexico

those are my main concerns right now so any advice would be appreciated

Daniel you'll be fine as long as you know where you're going, don't stop along the way, take the toll roads, and really don't go out alone after dawn

Or you can do the opposite of all of those and be fine as well

For anyone driving down for the 1st time through San Ysirdro, it's going to be easier to find your way with the new configuration. It used to be a bit confusing to find your first exit, but now you just look for the Ensenada sign and exit right shortly after you get through inspection. Plunks you right down on the Tijuana-Ensenada (a.k.a. human-chicken ) Road.

It's a big fancy-schmansy crossing point now, but looks like they still wave just about everyone through

Yeah, but WTF is up with it taking 45 minutes (prob more like an hour) to get from exit 6 to the border?

Maybe there was an accident that got cleared out by the time I got there, or maybe this new border setup is a traffic nightmare. IDK.

Looked like a lot more staff and a lot more secondary screening going on.

It's slightly less confusing to get onto the Scenic Road though, yay!

Lol, yeah hopefully for those of us who cross with some frequency, this doesn't mean more hassle going South. Could def. see it backing up more during the rush hour commute from SD > TJ on weeknights due to the two huge turns vs. the previous straight shot through.

So this change is permanent? For a second I was hoping that super fancy state-of-the-art new facility was just a temporary change

I did see a sigalert/probable accident right at the border, so maybe it was a 1-time thing (there was no traffic from San Diego down to ~ exit 6, I waited out rush hour).

Oddly enough I have noticed that there's often traffic coming into Mexico at the Otay Mesa crossing even on off-hours, like Tues/Weds evenings. .

Any word on either of these? Thanks in advance...

The tinting thing, I don't know about...I think it came up way earlier in the thread. Google Migjt BR best bet.

Nice car, how nice? It'd be absurd to drive a Rolls Royce down here, but you see plenty of jeeps, lex, coops beemaz and Benz in the nice buildings.

Personally I'd rather drive a Chevy down here but you will probably be fine.

It's not that nice...'07 Lexus IS 350. I know people drive way nicer down there but I was just curious if anyone's had any sort of trouble. Unfortunately I don't have another car to take down there. Anyway, thanks for the info.

I've been told that they play 2 seasons every year in the Mexican 1st Division, and they just had their last home game of this regular season, but come March (?) I highly recommend anyone down here who's a sports fan to attend a Tijuana Xolos soccer game.

It's like college football meets soccer in a smaller stadium and the energy is the tits. Even in a 0-0 tie. Right off Agua Caliente near the big casino, seemed like a pretty safe area and there were lots of families at the game, etc. as well.

Plus, their "rip-off" beer prices involve a guy pouring two bottles of Tecate into a paper cup for < $5 . Bunch of random/interesting-looking food options and I wanted to try all of them.

They're-in-first-place-I'm-a-bandwagon-jumper-with-some-brand-new-Xolos-gear

Read some SD articles where several thousand people come down from the States for every game, met some friends on the other side and indeed a lot of red and black crossing both ways at San Ysidro.

steele108 drove a nice car down here (was either a mercedes or bmw, forget), and didnt have any problems. Small sample tho obv. I think as long as you have indoor/protected parking at your condo, and aren't leaving it in unpopulated areas, or leaving it places overnight, you would probably be fine. Just a guess though, its really hard to say for sure

they sell those plastic beerpong tables (work great as desks) at home depot for like $70

quality chair, best bet is buying in america and having miguel's guy bring it over the border for $50

i would avoid bringing down a nice car if you don't want it to get random dings or scratches, because thats pretty much guaranteed if you're gonna be a rosarito regular.

the drive from san diego to rosarito is actually really easy and mostly highway, so i'm not worried driving my slightly nicer-than-normal car. but trips to the grocery store i'm still a little paranoid because i don't want to attract attention... i'm getting a secondary car that is more mexico-functional and it lets me be a little more inconspicuous in my daily journeys.

Flying back to San Diego today, may not have a ride back to Calafia. I was told I can take a trolley to the border and then cab once I get cross? Can someone please elaborate further?

What trolley do i take from the airport? How is the crossing on foot? I just tell the cab driver Calafia in Rosarito and he'll know it?

I've never taken the trolley myself but I've heard they run every 15-30 mins from right near the airport and it goes pretty much right to the border and you just walk across and then theres obv mexican cabs all over right past the border.

Its like 50/50 the cab driver in TJ will know where Calafia is...if he doesn't just tell him you live close to Rosarito Beach Hotel (he'll know where that is) and then when he gets to the hotel, you'll just continue south on that same main blvd past the 7/11, past mongo grill, etc etc til you run into Calafia. If he speaks no english, can just tell him 'vivo cerca de Rosarito Beach Hotel, como cinco minutos sur'...might not be perfect grammar but he'll know what u mean

you have to take a bus (#992) from outside the SD airport to the trolley depot. this costs 2.50 (exact change or they jip you)

outside of SD airport is small and there's one bus stop, can't reaslly miss it. ask any employee as well. get on the bus

from this point forward, just follow the flow of pedestrian traffic. this is a common route and there will be many many people going to the border this way

get off at the trolley depot. you cant miss it, it's the place with the trolleys plus a common stop.

get on the south bound towards san ysidro, theres a ticket machine to purchase your ticket outside the trolley

walk across on border. this is very easy. takes < 5min and there's a rank of cabs on the TJ side.
