It can and it is. Do you have livestock on the roads at night? How about guys driving drunk on 2 lane highways (with potholes bigger than german shephards) in big rigs? Stop signs are optional?

I have come within inches of hitting pedestrians walking across the street in the middle of the night a few times. When I was going to Walmart the other day someone ran across the highway in between cars.

Sounds a lot like my daily commute. Except for the livestock. Which are probably smarter than most of the people I see on the road.

I've lived in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. It's much harder to drive down here, especially at night. My favorite was driving down the toll road which is two lanes with.a heavy divider, and a guy was cruising along at about 40mph on the wrong side of the road, coming at me. I've also seen people driving in reverse down the free road for no apparent reason. The worst and most common though is people jumping out in the middle of the toll road when I'm doing 80. They jump from behind the pillar in the middle of the road, or better yet jump over the divider so if they slip, I would kill them instantly. Everything is the same at night, except there is no road lights. On the free road there is no road paint, and a complex (or idiotic) system of cones set up that can be hard to navigate through

In short you are completely wrong, sorry to say. However it is very safe in rosarito overall. Media reports of violence have nothing to do with down here.

Had the freakiest one yet last time I came down, coming on the turnout for the scenic road a guy with no legs on a wheelchair going top speed in the other direction (coming towards me on a ramp with no shoulder).

Do any of you live at Palacio Del Mar? If so, how is the internet there? Are there one or two complexes you would say are best?

I'm reading a lot of comments about how driving down there could be considered slightly risky. I'm driving down on Thursday for the first time. We have a house for our MTT guys 30 mins south of Rosarito. I've never been down there before. My plan is to rent a car to drive down. We are working with Scott at Expats. Do you guys think I should have him meet me at the border to let us follow him down to the house or do you think we'll be completely fine driving on our own? I'm planning on coming across the border at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

Internet is good. There's only one inhabitable building.

You're completely fine to drive on your own...It's a little more hectic than US roads, and you gotta keep your eyes open, but I drive down there and back all the time.

- remember to get Mexican car insurance
- get a decent set of directions and use some caution on the road and you'll be fine.

I think Miguel and RiverPrayer have both offered testimonials ITT...if you are able to get one, get one.

+1 that driving isn't that bad, it's just a tad stressful when you first cross to make sure you can read all the signage and make that first proper exit. After the 2nd or 3rd time, it's no problema.

Rosarito/Ensenada/Cuota are your 3 keywords. Not every sign for your exits will have all 3, but they'll have at least 1 or 2. You can pay your $2.40 (or whatever it is) toll with USD.

Thursday at 10 a.m. should be a good time to drive in, just a little more pedestrian chicken heading West on the Tijuana-Ensenada Road with all the homeless guys that hang out by the border there during the day. They're doing some construction on that road as well, but after getting re-routed once through Zona Centro, that exit ramp seems to be back open (sample size = 1 time since )

Is it sketchy driving a nicer car down there through TJ? Has anyone had any problems with that? I also read that it's illegal to have aftermarket tint. I have an '07 IS 350 with front window tint that's illegal in CA. Will either of these two be a problem crossing into TJ?

Just curious, but why would you be unable to take the monitor with you?

They started building a 2nd tower and stopped when the financial crisis hit/selling units got tough. You'll see a number of foundations/partially-completed condo towers driving down the Scenic highway.

I realize this was discussed a bit earlier in this thread, but anyone use the currency exchange booths in TJ to go Pesos > USD? Is it a slam dunk/100% that it's dirty money?*

(*I presume yes b/c you're getting better than market rates, but want a reason to believe otherwise and take advantage if necessary )
