I'm also looking into Playa Del Carmen but have some reservations. So any advice would be really helpful.

I believe most poker guys on here are in Rosarito, Puerto Vallarta or Playa. I'm leaning towards Playa as it's easier/cheaper to get flights to Cancun from UK(I think)

From what I've read it may be a little safer then Rosario/Tjuana but that could be rubbish. I am a little concerned about safety so if anyone could comment about that pls.
I lived in Thailand for 6 years or so and came home to work back in IT but now back at Uni and it's remote learning for now so fancy getting away. Never been to South or Central America.

Is there a close nit poker community that I can be involved with. Actually doesn't have to be poker just a way of meeting people as I'll be coming alone.

I'll be staying either 2 or 3 months so is it easy enough to find a 1 bedroom apartment month to month leasing? What sort of cost and who would i contact?
I'd also be open to sharing a bigger place if anyone is interested ��

I'm right into golf so I'll be bringing my clubs. Anyone else play and is it fairly easy to get on the courses for reasonable price?

Is there still some kind of nightlife with the Covid situation? Is it a terrible idea to come at this time due to Covid?
Apart from needing a negative test will i likely have any issues with getting in and having visa waiver stamped being from Europe?

I can't comment on golf or nightlife in Playa during Covid, or the poker community. However, Playa's economy completely relies on tourism, and overall it is very safe. Sure, you can get into trouble if you're dealing or using/buying hard drugs, but overall it's very safe, and MUCH safer than Tijuana/Rosario.

Weather-wise November to April would be a good time to be in Playa, but the summer months are brutally hot.

With the downturn in tourism I'm sure it will be super-easy to find an apartment to rent for a few months. Airbnb.com would likely be your best option for month-to-month rental, but I wouldn't book anything long-term in advance. Find a place you like on airbnb that has lots of good references, rent it for a few days, and then when you get there, if you like it, negotiate a lower monthly rate in person with the owner to avoid airbnb fees.

Playa is nice, but if you're not into diving, imo a month there would be plenty enough time to experience the area. If you've got three months and don't want to do a lot of traveling, I'd suggest spending a month in Playa, a month in Puerto Vallarta, and a month in Mexico City. Hello, we are a lot of poker players and we didnt feel insecure there. We are here since long time for most of them. I was visiting Puerto Vallarta and the city is good, but the sea much more better there ... Also in Puerto Vallarta the nightlife is "****" for me, and for security Playa should be safer. There is some shoot killing but its mostly "narcos" shooting. You more have to be carefull with police who want to rob you especially if you walk in the street drunk.

The nightlife is back (not much people) but its enough to go out few times a week and week end.

I have some contact for rental if you want. If you come in middle of december price will be much higher especially for short term.

For coming there i advice you to have a ticket to leave mexico and also to have a proof of money and maybe a "hotel" residency or something. I read some stuff that sometimes they dont accept you to enter in Mexico (but its unusual)

Playa is safe as houses overall, nightlife can have its risks anywhere, just be street smart and stay away from drugs.

I'm from UK and you can go there and just login to poker sites as normal. Eventually they might ask for proof of address or something because of IP. So just make sure your bank is hooked up to a parents house or something. Then hook up pokerstars to that. If they ask for proof just show them online statement with the secure lock in the URL bar and say you are travelling for a while and will be back home soon.

Airbnb is always a great choice for apartments and probably much cheaper these days.

Dont worry about the visas too much, they usually just give 6months no questions asked or you just have to say "tourism".

Use BestOnwardTicket.com just in case the flight from UK ask for onward flights. Remember nobody needs to know you are scrapping that flights 2 weeks later. It is always worth the 7$ or whatever even if they don't ask for it.
