Hey guys!

Me and a friend recently moved to Playa. Is there any Skype group with other players here? Would be nice to meet other players and share some ideas.

Hey Guys.

I am planning to move to Playa for a relative short period of two months post the WSOP in July. This is my first time moving out of my country to play online poker but I have been a regular to the WSOP for the last 3years.

I am being forced to move out since most websites now have a country specific client for us and I want to be able to play on the international platforms.

I would need to rent a place as well as require a rental contract in my name to validate my poker accounts. There is still a decent amount of time till I move so if someone is looking for roommates or has any insights on where to search please let me know.

I did visit playa last year for tourism purpose and found it great except the sargassum part.

He means the seaweed at the beach. Its not always like that, probably just time of year. They do a good job cleaning it up too.

Anybody living in Cancun? or am I the only one?

I went back a couple pages (the equivalent of 2 years of posting) and saw my question pop up, but no answers : any casinos offering live games over here? Not looking to grind, just a few hours of entertainment, so even small stakes would do, thx

Yeah, just came back from there. Decent rake (capped at 8-9$), so-so action, game picks up during the evening. It was just staring to pick up now at midnight, but it remains still quite small (max BI of 500 MXN, but some nights they allow more). Fun for a few hours of grind though

I stayed in district 22 you can see there on the map. Was very safe, right next to the Ado station. There is lots of gyms all around Cancun, also outdoor calisthenics at the Kukulkan roundabout and Parque Kaban.

Pretty much everywhere below the Route 180 road/ Kaan Chac is very safe imo. Marduk, Niza and Coral Riviera are quite high class residential areas from what i gathered during my walking around.

Not sure if you need to spend that much on airbnb though. Unless you choose to be ballin' xD.

Friend and me are planning to move to playa in late august/early september for 3+ months and are not sure where to search for apartment. We heard Playacar is nice and safe area but I see on the map, there is not many restaurants or gym around. I guess we would need to use uber or something?
What other areas would you suggest that are safe and have many restaurants and good gym/box in walking distance?
East of the playacar is center if I'm correct? Are there safe apartments that are enclosed/have security?
(We are looking for 2bedroom in range of 1500-2000$ per month)

Thnx

I'm sure you could find something in Playacar on AirBnb for your price range. I am not too familiar with that area in terms of restaurants/gyms tho. No Ubers, but its fine if you just flag a taxi. They are very safe, i have used them many times and never been scammed or anything.

Pretty much all Playa is safe, maybe just avoid Ejidal and the north side which is more local. There is a neighbourhood more inland called Real Ibiza (among others that are similar), lots of gated communities, very safe. This is where i was at in Playa. You can find lots of restaurants there and there is even a food court inside Plaza Americas. There is some gyms nearby, but not really in walking distance. You would need to get a taxi, probably cost you about 40-50 pesos. Generally taxis cost <100 peso anywhere in Playa that you would want to go locally. Its only like 5$. Same/cheaper than Uber.

If you are looking for gyms n boxing. Cancun is better option for this as there is tons of gyms. If you want Beach life and nightlife then Playa is best.

Hi everyone, planning to return to Mexico next year to see more of the country, and of course visit Riviera Maya. Just wondering if any of you could share experiences on visiting Xcaret or Xel Ha? According to this article, Xel Ha has snorkeling spots which I would enjoy, while it seems there are underground rivers in Xcaret which are enticing as well. Which of two would be more worth it? Or are these tourist traps that I should skip altogether?

They are touristy i guess because they are the biggest name attractions. I didn't go to either recently, but i went to xcaret when i was younger and it was a lot of fun, especially the underground river. I will visit Xel-Ha next time i go for sure.

I recommend the Ek-Balam tour, its a full day, they pick you up with some other ppl in minibus. Then you go to a cenote where you can rappel and do some fun jumps and ziplining. After that you eat traditional foods and then move onto the Ruins of Ek-Balam before driving back.

Hey guys,

I was thinking of heading to Mexico for a month (or longer, depending on how I'm liking it) later this year. I was planning to stay at a hotel for a week while I look at airbnb's/rentals. I've had bad experience with airbnb in the past and want to scout a bit first. Alternatively, if someone can recommend a good person to rent from I'm interested in that as well.

Some general questions:
1) Are there many foreigners living in the area besides poker players?
2) How's the dating scene? What's the website to use or is it Tinder? Is there a university nearby?
3) Does power or internet go out ever?
4) Are foreigners targetted by criminals?
5) How are noise levels? I want to be somewhere reasonably quiet at night but not too far from shopping/gyms/nightlife etc.

I would also be interested if there is one or some kind of community for poker players out there.

If anyone's out there now feel free to shoot me a PM.

Its been a few years since I lived there so someone with more recent experience can give a better update, but I'll add what I know.

1. Yes a lot of different foreigners live there not interested in poker. I always felt like there were a lot of Argentines and Italians that lived or vacationed there.

2. Dating scene is great but will shrink over time as its a smallish beach town and not a major city. Tinder was pretty limited and I think you run out of swipes in a day or two. Day game is perfect as its a very open relaxed place. Plenty of hot girls willing to be approached and give their number. Nearest major university is in Cancun. Lots of hotties around playa so no need to be near a university.

3. Internet was a little slow during peak evening time 5-8pm. It cut out maybe once a month, but seems pretty decent. I didn't think it was a problem.

4. I don't think foreigners are targeted. Stay away from the drug scene or be very cautious. Mostly its cartel vs cartel, nothing to do with foreigners. Use common sense. If there's a opportunity to steal something it will be gone so take care of your valuables.

5. Calle 12 is the party street so there's a lot of noise around there. 5th avenue is the main walking street.

I exercised at Evolve Gym. Its pretty small, but has everything you need. Very crowded around 7pm with a already small space so if you can get there another time it would be better.

Mega is a supermarket that I used for groceries. There's also a Walmart near it too. A bit further down is a Sam's club if you can drive there.

If you live past 30th avenue housing prices should go down a lot. I lived just past there near Mega on Calle 18 across from Mayalav laundry. They have some rooms they own across the street. You can talk to them and ask if anything is available. I think I paid just over 300 usd for a 1 bedroom that was completely renovated. You're a 15 min walk to the beach so if you plan on going everyday maybe its too far and you want something right on your doorstep.

I wouldn't stay at a hotel for a week if you're just using it as a base until you find a longer term place. There's hostels around there you can crash at for 5-7 usd while you get a feel for the place and can often get good information or a connection through someone there. I use hostelworld.com to view places then just walk in without booking online. Very cheap way to explore before getting settled.

There was a Skype group that was pretty big, but I don't have it. Plenty of guys were willing to meet up. Played volleyball in the morning or basketball in the evening from those Skype groups. I think most have moved on, but it was fun times. Someone else can update on the poker community in its current state.

Going later this year would be the best time with the coolest temperatures and a lot of travelers gives the place a energetic vibe. It gets very hot in the summer so November to March is the ideal time.
