i've never been there, but the GIOCONDA saloon on Av. Constituyentes is in a mall, so it's probably like the harvard of cosmetology schools

There is a good french hairdresser near playacar : Atelier Boo Jeremy on facebook (but a bit expensive 290pesos) .... There is some mexican hairdresser its 100 or 150 pesos near Mega.

i lived in baja for a bit but im planning a trip to cancun with my wife next month and was wondering if any of you PDC regs had special infos to share about local ruins, taco stands, fishing charters, etc. i have a general idea about things but figured i'd consult with the locals before planning anything out. any advice is much appreciated

There is a ruin called Ek Balam, similar to Chitchen Itza but less popular and if you go on the tour it is usually coupled with Cenote Maya which is awesome. You get a blessing from a shaman, rappel into a cenote and then have zipline/jumping platform fun within the cenote. After that you have traditional Mayan food before moving onto the the ruins for the final part of the day. It costs about 2600 pesos. If you go to Mega Soriana on Constityuentes you can find a dude on bottom floor called Octavio, cool guy he can sort you out.

Tulum ruins is a good trip also. Get the Ado bus from Playa, takes just under an hour, then you can walk to the ruins from the bus station in Tulum, or just take a taxi. The beach at the ruins is amazing. You can stay the night in a hotel or head back to Playa the same day.

I am not sure about fishing stuff, there is a charter on the north side of walking street, you probably need to access it via Punta Esmerelda beach though, which would be great for a free walk with your wife .

We tried to do ek balam but there wasnt any availability on the day we had planned for, same with coba, so we did tulum instead. Was awesome all the same

Ahh too bad, Tulum beach is awesome though. If you are still there. Check out Cenote Chaak Tun in Playa. 500 peso in, and should be able to get taxi there from centro for around 150-200peso. Its good for a morning trip, only lasts about 2 hours.

There is a site called Playa-Rentals but i have never used it, the prices seemed decent though.

so my wife and i have a habit of buying ceramic/clay hand-painted cat statues because we're crazy people, but i found a little shop in cancun that had the coolest **** ever. apparently they employ a local mayan family to make artwork that has traditional/sacred mayan imagery incorporated into all the pieces and everything is blessed by a shaman, including the shop owner (because otherwise they'll find and kill you for selling or distributing it). you can find similar stuff in other shops, but most will not contain any of the sacred designs unless they have a personal blessing.

anyway, we got a cheetah statue which is basically sculpted from clay, coated in wax, and then has a bunch of little colored o rings punched into it to make the designs. i didn't make a conscious connection about it at the time, but clearly the cheetah is the embodiment of rungood, so i'm pretty stoked to have this thing- definitely didn't see anything like it in baja.
