thanks for the tips.

after wasting a ton of time on airbnb, and facebook groups being pummeled by agents offering ****ty deals I was fairly fed up. I was planning to pack up end of the month and head to asia.

I went for a couple runs with my phone and collected a bunch of numbers, then started sending whatsapp, using translater. It actually works fairly well, almost all have been online so they have whatsapp, and most have replied. I assume the others just don't have anything. the prices are definitely lower than airbnb and what I'd see agents posted on facebook groups. some are so poorly advertised they have 3 open units.

I just got a great deal from an old lady with no english. gave me 3 months with option to extend.

So for anyone looking for an apartment that cant speak english...dont hesitate to use whatsapp and translator. Before I'm about to meet i tell them I have terrible spanish but they dont care, and I already have a price.

why is it scooters arent more popular here? they are really cheap for 125 cc ~1k usd in walmart. thats cheaper than they are in thailand....usually 1500 usd.

Is it just that theft is a problem that noone bothers with them?

I haven't read this entire thread, but from what I am familiar with it doesn't seem that there's been much discussion regarding cool things to do in PDC & nearby places to visit--beyond drinking & grinding, what do those of you who live in PDC do for fun in your free time?

I've been in PDC several times (mostly to dive the cenotes) and I'll be in the area Dec. 8 - 18th. This trip I'm planning on staying on Cozumel for the first week and diving the reefs/walls there--if anyone here dives & wants to join up get in touch. Probably going to reserve a place via airbnb for the first few nights, but if anyone has better suggestions let me know...don't think this is high season and assume decent rooms at small hotels / guest houses in the $30-$50/night range will be plentiful?

Also there's a hippie jam-band festival taking place at the all-inclusive Now Saphire resort in Puerto Morelos Dec. 8-12 http://stringsandsol.com/ It's sold out (and at $2,000+ for the weekend I wasn't planning on going anyway) but the music takes place on the beach, and I'm wondering how easy or hard it would be to crash--can the resort gate-off the beach in front of their property & prevent people from walking the beach??

Depending on how the first week goes I may stay longer, or more likely take a few days to visit Bacalar &/or Merida. Anyone here been to either & have any recommendations good or bad?

Really looking forward to re-visiting Los Aquachiles & El Fogon!

#1: Ive come to the conclusion that drinking grinding and beaching is about it. I suppose your only here for a short while you shouldn't have trouble finding activities but I haven't done much yet but grind drink and chase.

#2: it is high season but not insane season...but yes 30-50 should be ok. it may not be great tho.

#3 any resort in any country running an event will block off access to the event whether it be at the shorline or further up where the sand meets the venue. no way you are getting in without sneaking. the beach makes it a little easier to sneak in, especially if the event is non recurring. recurring events invest more in countering sneakers

ritalin modafinil and bupropion are available here. modaf and bup are kinda pricey....3 or 4 bucks a tab. ritilin is 2 bux a tab.

you can get a loop diuretic (lasix) if you want to look shredded for the beach but dont take it continuously. It will give you a 2 day rip and you will lose 10 pounds

I know all you young guys in your 20's think life is long & there's plenty of time to do everything, but you're wrong. And while making money, drinking & chasing skirts are all worthwhile pursuits, to not explore surrounding areas & not take advantage of the myriad of interesting outdoor activities in/around PDC is imo almost criminal.

Similarly, why anyone living in PDC who enjoys swimming & being in the water wouldn't learn how to scuba dive is beyond my comprehension. Not suggesting that "my way is the right way"-- and if a person doesn't swim or is afraid of the water I suppose that's clearly a good excuse--but otherwise I strongly encourage anyone living in PDC to learn to dive. You don't have to be in great or even good physical condition to dive, and unlike a lot of sports, it's something you can do well into your senior years.

Scuba diving (especially diving at night) is the nuts!

I'm not sure. I think its tough to do. I went for ritalin because I assumed I couldnt get adderal. basically if you get a clerk at the counter and theres anyone around i dont think you get anything good. if you can figure out when the owner is there and hit them when its not busy you can get anything u want. adderal is tough....i might try for it next time at the same place. the ritalin isnt making much difference. I microdose lsd and mushrooms back home and I cant do it here....so im finding it a bit of a struggle. I'll give it 2 more weeks but i might have to go home just to microdose and get poker on track.

I have my padi from ko tao a few years back. not sure I can dive again but id be a terrible dive partner anyway...because I cant remember any of the **** they told me.

scuba...for me did not provide enough freedom. I want to go on my schedule and drift everywhere I go

Diving in PDC/Tulum area is all about the cenotes, but you def want to have decent scuba skills to dive the cenotes. Snorkeling them is no problem however.

Diving on Cozumel is a lot of drift diving, if that's what you're referring to. If, however, you mean you don't like diving in a group but prefer to be off on your own doing your own thing, than yea, diving in Cozumel would not be a good choice. However, there's great snorkeling off the shore in Cozumel.

Ritalin does nothing for me. If you find a pharmacy that sells adderal, please post or send me a PM.

Anyone going to the Riveria Maya Jazz Festival at Mamita's Beach Club this weekend?

It's FREE!

I'm supposed to arrive Dec. 2nd but am going to see if I can change my flight to the 1st to see Jimmy Herring (Widespread Panic) and John McLaughlin play. On Dec 2nd Chick Corea & Bella Fleck are playing.

Have been back in Playa for less than 24 hours; lets just say that I'm less than impressed and already considering leaving.

Congrats to tptb for turning 5th Ave into one big shopping mall filled with ****ty t-shirt shops, generic jewelry stores, Israelis hawking Dead Sea products, plus plenty of stereotypical American franchises. Maybe/hopefully there are more interesting parts of town elsewhere but I don't know that I have the time or interest to try and find out.

Found a place to stay 10th Ave & 26th for $30/night. Nothing special but last night at least it was quiet, and obviously convenient to 5th Ave if that's your thing.

I stumbled upon a small casino last night just a few blocks off 5th Ave--the last time I was here I don't think there were any casinos. Anyway, I went inside and there was one table playing NL hold'em. Looked to be small stakes and a very nitty game, but to be fair it was a Sunday night. I have to assume that in an area with so many drunk tourists like Playa, on the right night they likely have much bigger/juicier games? I'm not a regular reader of this thread so possibly I missed it, but I don't think I've read much discussion here regarding live games in Playa.

Are the games no good?? Exorbitant rake??

theres a cool dirbike track on the road going to plaza las americans. looks awesome. im guessing its all locals. Even a weak dirtbike so I couldn't kill myself or a mountain bike would be a blast on that for a while.

I've been on Cozumel for last 5 days. For those of you living/visiting Playa, Cozumel is a 45 min ferry ride away--there are several different ferry companies, most charge approx 130 pesos ($7) one way, but one of the companies is having a promotion for 69 pesos.

Cozumel is much more relaxed than Playa, and probably not what the average 2+2 grinder is looking for. Definitely an older crowd, no nightclubs or bars booming techno music....more of a flip-flops and margarita vibe.

Diving is pretty much world class. On yesterday's first dive we saw 13 LARGE Eagle rays, one large Nurse shark, 4 black tip reef sharks, 4 turtles (including one loggerhead), several diff species of eels, plus lobster, crab, grouper, etc..

Diving ranges from challenging (think tight swim thrus, ripping currents) to super-easy. Have only done one night dive so far which was a blast--saw loads of lobster, crabs, and eels, plus got to hang out and watch several octopus crawling/swimming across the reef. They are perhaps my favorite creature to see on a dive, such an amazing & intelligent animal!

Those of you living in Playa should definitely take the ferry over and check Cozumel out

P.S.--Only takes 3 days / approx $300 to get certified to scuba dive!

if you made a nice pointy stick could you kill and eat them? Im going to make a bungie spear. lobster I could catch with my bare hand they have no claws here. try to grab an atlantic lobster and is a lot more interesting...you have to tickle your hands in front of them get them to raise thier claws then grab them from behind

How many meters deep were you when you saw the beautiful sea creatures? I ask because I, in a sense, echo piepounders point WRT freedom.

Why do you need that gear, if you're a great swimmer, "you be swimmin" meaning humans are adept swimmers

I prefer freediving myself(TBF I practice swimming a lot), with flippers, you can hold your breath for 2 minutes FOR SURE so why would you want all that gear?

been reading a bit cause im going to go snorkeling there in a couple days. Just going to rent a scooter some gear and check out all the places within swimming range for me. there are shallow reefs not far from shore that have lots of fish apparently.

i imagine to see what he saw its to Columbia/Palancar Reefs which are a boatride.

The deepest I want was about 90 feet, but majority of time was spent in the 30-65 foot range. I definite can NOT hold my breath for 20 minutes, but regardless, if I am regularly staying down for 60+ minutes compared to your 2 minutes, does that mean I'm having 30X more fun than you??

All I can say is that you should try it--everyone who I've convinced to get certified has ended up loving it. With regards to "all that gear", I'm assuming you think it would be confining, but in my opinion the opposite is true--"all that gear" allows me to visit an alien world for an extended period of time, something that is not possible for most free divers. PLUS I get to enjoy night diving, which is the most psychedelic thing I've ever experienced.

While there is a limited amount of snorkeling to be enjoyed on Cozumel, all the really good sites are only accessible by boat and typically deeper than 30 feet, far too deep to enjoy via snorkeling. Plus the water is often pretty choppy, and too much boat traffic to safely snorkel.

Yes, dove most of the Columbia / Palancar reefs.

snorkeling is lame to me i mean why not use swimmers googles and go a lil deeper (actually use a hybrid google w larger eye holes but not overly large like snorklers, i tried it but never do it

i stay in the 10-30 foot depth range as thats where its most beatiful so you can just free dive that and hold breath for 3 minutes

ive tried diving and been countless times, its ok, but it limits your ability to michael phelps swim like a fish rotating 360 degrees 'mirin' all the fish

studies say people are less likely to change their opinion when its written debating/internet arguing vs audible lol so i guess im just engaging to get my post count up lol tho were both being truthful and hopefully 'building' learning here haha

i beat triathlete guys in lap swimming contests (i simply prepare for open ocean swimming before an island visit) so diving is just kinda lame when you can micheal phelps it up w flippers and hold ur breath for 3min then c*m up to top for 5 seconds then back down for 3 min and repeat this for 8 hours like ive done many times its soo fun i dont even get tired
