They used to play at Mom's Bar on Tuesday's and Thursday's (but I think for just bar tabs or like $20 tournaments) and at Ranita's, but I don't know if those games are still going on or not.

haha. I don't think most have to worry about that. The % of long term winning sports bettors is significantly lower than winning poker players and only a few % of poker players win.

Does anyone know if I can change Argentina pesos for Mexican pesos in the casa de cambios there? Trying to figure out what to do with this Argentina money I have. Change it here to dollars then to Mexican pesos there or try to find a place to change Argentina pesos there? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I'd either try to change it to Mexican pesos in Argentina, or do the exchange in Cancun before you go to Playa.

I had a bunch of ARS when i came to Mexico. Outside of Mexico City and Guadalajara it is very hard to find a place that will exchange them. It is possible there would be a place in Cancun that would do it though.

I went to Mom's Thursday before last & they confirmed they have Tuesday/Thursday games. It was early & they were already done though, 10PM maybe?

You won't get the best rate, but it may be the only one...at the Cancun airport.

I just received an email from someone else on another Playa-related travel forum; evidently the games at Mom's are on Tuesday's & Thursdays and start at 4PM in the afternoon. I think they are probably tournament style & more just an excuse for a dozen expats to get-together and drink more than anything else...

Just a repeated update for most of you, but if you're new to the thread, moving down to Playa soon (or recently), or have an extra room opening up for rent, I'm moving down at the end of the week. I've got a place to crash for a little while, so I won't need a place instantly on arrival, but I'll be looking for places pretty much as soon as I hit the ground.

I spend 500 pesos per month on cable and internet. Although I have not received a bill for the last two months. Has anyone else had trouble not getting bills from Cablemas?

Electricity comes every two months and I spent around 90 USD a month. I will depend on how much you run your A/C. I rarely run mine since the heat doesn't both me at all. If you ran the AC constantly I would assume your power bill would be much much higher, maybe 300 a month or something.

Ouch. Why do you think yours is so high? I have gas hot water, so maybe that is it?

electricity cost is one thing people thinking of coming to live here should definitely be aware of. electricity can be extremely expensive here, and costs can vary widely from one place to another. you will not find anyone who will be able to explain exactly why.

the driver of your electricity cost is going to be a/c. i've lived in 3 different places. two with central a/c, one with mini-splits. i'm accustomed to living in a space that is temperature-controlled, so i use my a/c quite a lot. with central air, i've generally set the thermostat around 72 or 73 degrees fahrenheit. the a/c is on 24 hours a day, but obviously central air is self-regulating and will shut off when the temperature drops below the thermostat setting. on a monthly basis, i've had bills anywhere from 3,000 mxn to 10,000 mxn ($250 - $800 / month).

these have all been new, upscale 2 bedroom condos. that's way more expensive than any electric bill i've ever had in the US. my rent has been $1500-$1700 / month, so i've had electricity as much as half my rent. that's insane, but that's not unusual here. people in high-rent areas who use a/c a lot subsidize electricity costs here for everyone else.

one problem is that it's very difficult to know with any certainty what your electricity cost will be in advance. you can ask for copies of prior electric bills, but if you use the a/c differently than prior occupants, your bill can be wildly different. so, for anyone thinking about coming down here to get a "baller place", just be prepared that your $1500-$2000 rent may come with as much as an $800 / month electricity bill...

This is better here than the Skype group. Any of you guys scuba dive? I missed on on diving here last time and I hear they regularly have bull sharks on the dives.

WGC matchplay is that weekend so most of the big names wont' be there, should still be fun though. We're getting the $75 ticket that gets you into the beer tents on 10 15 and 17 along with food/drinks. If anyone else ends up going pm me on here and we can meet up for a beer and maybe bet a few peso's on who gets closest to the hole in each group as they come through or something.
