well, nicestory, Medellin doesn't have the good beaches you're looking for, but it's got the bad bitches you desire. I personally haven't been to BA, and I've heard good things, but pretty much everyone who has lived in both prefers Medellin. that's just hearsay, though.

it's worth learning spanish, which should be obvious.

I've lived in both and prefer BA by a huge margin.

BA will generally be much better suited to someone coming to latin america for their first time who does not speak spanish. Both countries technically have beaches accessible within a day, but both have many drawbacks afaik. BA should be (much?) cheaper given current exchange rates

Buenos Aires >>> Medellin by a long shot. its way more international. a lot more things to do, more culture, etc. Medellin is nice for a week of party. And thats it.

Agreed, BA >>> Medellin and it's really not even close. BA is much more western, Medellin feels a lot more third world. Better restaurants and bars in BA. Generally I found I had a lot more in common with Argentines than Colombians. BA has a couple great neighborhoods with lots of trees, quieter streets, parks, but still close to the action. Even the nicest neighbourhoods in Medellin still feel dirty and unsafe. The only drawback to BA is that it may be difficult to find a place with reliable internet.

BA by a huge margin for culture/parties/girls are generally classier and more "European looking" if you are into that. Also great wine/steak.

That said, internet in BA is atrocious, and rolling blackouts are common late December/Jan/February.

Rent in BA is significantly more expensive, everything else is a bit cheaper.

Basically, completely in love with BA for everthing else, but it's pretty horrible for work in my experience. (I've lived in several buildings there. Some better than others, but had some issues in all of them.)

Also like Medellin alot. For 50mb/s stable internet, women are amazing and really friendly, can get a baller place for cheap, much closer to the US.

Both completely crush mexico/costa rica.

$650 to rent a bedroom in Medellin, even strata 5+, is a horrible price.

Not when the guys renting are already paying the gringo price.

http://www.masificados.com/propiedad...r/apartamentos

and

http://www.compartoapto.com

only 2 sites i know of that have fairly normal pricing. 1st is newspaper classifieds. I found my first aparment here through that, and was 1.3m for 2 bedroom penthouse (not super nice) by suramericana. Don't even try if you aren't fluent imo.
2nd is just locals looking for roommates and deals can be found. I highly recommend.

facebook has many groups but mostly shared ex-pat housing or people just cross posting from airbnb.

everyone talks about this gringo price, etc etc.... Colombian law requires one or two people who own property in medellin to put it up for collateral for any apartment you rent, at least legally. Also places are rented 1 year minimum. Security deposits are technically illegal in Colombia, but all gringo-catering realtors use this + gringo tax to offset whatever risk they see in going around the standard system.

Sure there are ways around this and sometimes you can deal directly with owners, but renting short term furnished housing with no fiador is a giant hurdle to overcome before you start getting local pricing.

I'm sure Barry could chime in, lol... but fact is its extremely difficult for extranjeros to get local pricing anywhere in Colombia. It was way more difficult when I moved to Pereira for a month, a smaller/cheaper city where every single 'good' price I needed a fiador.

Renting an unfurnished place for a year and paying up-front could also be an option. Not recommended for first timers...just pay the gringo tax as most do.

Jose has a very decent deal listed for anyone that is looking on 2p2 to rent an apartment in Medellin. He'd be justified in charging more imo just for the opportunity for an easy move, payable in stars, internet and grind-ready, and spanish roommate who knows the lay of the land (or at least poblado )

It's beyond difficult to rent an apartment from a local agency for anyone really even locals. I did it twice and was such a pain in the ass I'd never do it again.

Because of certain laws that basically make it impossible to evict people Colombians are hugely skittish about renting without co-signers that basically put up their own property as collateral on you paying the rent.
When you use an apartment agency they guarantee the owner gets the rent even if you don't pay and they have absurd requirements like one cosigners thats puts up their property as collateral and another that cosigns based on their Colombian based income that must be 2x the amount of the rent. There may be places that allow you to put money into a CD for the value of a years rent in lieu of one of these but then youi still have to pay the rent monthly. No thanks.

Trying to rent a nice expensive apartment became impossible for me because I had no cosigners with Colombian based income. Your best bet is to try to not go through agencies and pay up front.Even then I was denied more than once with offers to pay for the full year in advance even though I had co-signers that owned property, good colombian credit history, bank accounts in Colombia with 30x the monthly rent in them, etc, a registered business and was a permanent resident.

Best bet is finding foreigners to rent from, paying more is worth it if you arent planning on staying forever.

Half the people I met in Medellin tried to offer me an apartment to rent. There are se alquila signs in every neighborhood. For renting anywhere, especially Medellin, arrive with maximum flexibility and pound pavement until you find the right place at the right price.

when we rented our house (unfurnished), paid a 6 month "deposit" that goes into a bank account and collects interest (although COP is getting raped atm by the dollar)

My gf's dad had to put his apartment up as collateral and also cosign. That was the best deal we found, after talking to probably 5+ rental agencies, we just gave up and gave in

I dont understand completely but apparently theres really weird squatters rights here in medellin/colombia, plus the normal foreigner type risk, plus the legal system working so slow here (if the rental agency needs to sue you or something).

Also nice screen name Sabaneta, how long have you been in medellin?- if any of you guys go to lleras or parque el poblado to drink and havent tried sabaneta, you should

Probably because they've built a new building on every single empty lot in the city and surrounding areas the last 2 years. A few years ago it wasn't like that.
