I can get away for 2 months, and was thinking of really learning Spanish and being down there would give me that push. Really focus on it for 2 months.

But I see so many options... University/semi-university/hostel/private classes... Hard to tell anything apart as they all have lousy descriptions. Heck, given the monthly incomes for teachers, maybe even hire a real teacher full time for 2 months?
I'm on my second level of intensive classes at EAFIT. It's 4 hours every day for two weeks. I like the idea of just putting my mind in the Spanish mode, so taking the class has been a solid move. My friend took a class with me last session and didn't really like the professor so he opted for private lessons for the next level, also provided at EAFIT I believe. He did say he really liked previous professors at the program, so maybe it's really a hit or miss with professors. The program offers access to most things at the campus, and as I mentioned before the gym is reasonably priced and of reasonable quality. The program offers a 30 minute tutor every day and also hooks you up with a bunch of Spanish speakers wanting to learn English ("Language Partners"). Overall I'd say it's been positive

Hit me up if you have more Qs.

Just wanted to comment on the spanish thing, since it seems like a ton of people feel like they'll get by fine with english or confident they will learn spanish in like their first month here by taking a class, which is just so lol. (not singling out dc at all, you seem dedicated and I think you will pick things up much quicker than me or most people)

Live in spanish until it hurts your brain. I guess it's the same as physical muscle growth, but for a long time my brain would literally be sore and I would be insanely tired at the end of the day when I lived in spanish.

Fwiw I took 5-6 semesters of spanish classes when I was younger (kept moving and repeated spanish 1 for 3 years, lol), and seriously learned wayyyy more in hanging out with buddies for 2 weekends going snowboarding in Spain, because not a single person knew a single word of english. God it hurt so much at the end of each of those weekends, but I'm not kidding when I say I learned more in those like 6-7 days than I did in 5 semesters, but each day was like 16 hours of classes and having to figure things out bit by bit.

The classes helped for learning stuff like verb conjugation, a bit of vocab words... but for me it was just memorizing 'x' list of words, taking a test, getting a good grade, and forgetting it.

If you guys want to learn spanish seriously I would suggest living with Colombians and not putting yourself in an environment where its even possible to speak english. When I first moved here I lived with a guy from Spain for 6 months and far and away that's where I learned the most. It's just 100% different than going to a class for 2 hours a day. Compartoapto.com is a great site where normal people, students, professionals...are looking for roommates.

anyways, I ramble and I've beat that horse enough.

enjoy locombia gents

wholeheartedly agree with boliver. taking classes is no substitution for emerging yourself in the language on your own. it does however force yourself to get more reps. and provides a solid foundation. if money ain't a factor i would consider supplementing with classes.

also, anyone here watch NFL?! i think there's an Irish/English pub in Lleras that shows games. anyone know about it? looking to catch some games every Thursday/Sunday, if anyone's interested. if you're a Pats fan even better

Hi all,

Heading down to Medellin on Thursday with a pal were both English and just travelling around colombia looking to stay a bit longer in either Medellin or bogota. Need to find a gringo job or something to keep the trip going. Not played poker for a while now but thinking Of getting a laptop and trying to fund myself that way but obviously no guarantee and I Havnt played for a while. Can anyone suggest a good area for an apartment that is both cheap and not to far from poblado? And any suggestions on work would be appreciated too.

u can get a decent spot in envigado or laureles, or sabaneta, or itagui, the more roommates u have the more bang for your buck you will get, you can get a nice spot 3bedroom rent 400 each in a zone 5 zone 6 area.

horveech nfl is tough for us mtt grinders i got to grind my ass off on sundays
i recommend any non spanish players to just emerge yourself on your own. lots of words in spanish sounds similar to there english counterpart alrdy. have apps on your phone. try to listen to music in spanish and pick out words you know and piece it together, watch movies with subtitles in spanish. def recommend a private tutor if u have the cash its about 12-25 dollars a class

Also, our rent is $500 each a month and whilst its nothing super special, its a decent place in a great location. Others have been paying less rent and still had fine places

I will be heading to Medellin this October for around 6-7 months. I have been wanting to go for several years, but have always ended up other places (Philippines and Thailand).

I'm moving down to bootstrap a new online business and based on everything I have read about the city I am making the right move!

A few questions:

How are the brick and mortar poker options? Looks like Casino Allegre (?) is a pretty nice place. Since Black Friday I have been playing a lot of live poker and have come to enjoy it.

I am probably going to stray away from playing online as I will be working in front of a screen A LOT!

Is it easy to get out of the city and into the country? It looks like a mountainous area...which I love. Honestly, I get sick in cities from the smog and usually have to GET OUT every week or so. This is after being in Manila, Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Maybe Medellin is different?

Thanks again for the post. Great info!

1. the live action in the casinos the biggest games i seen is about 1/2 usd.the tournnaments they usally have run from 20 usd to about 60 usd. the biggest daily tournaments i seen was in casino rio and it had about 50 runners was a 50 dollar buyin,. there is also the ace of spades poker club. where you can play as high as u want if u have the people that want to play there. the biggest i seen there was 1/2 usd they also run small field small buyin tournaments about 2-4 times a week . https://www.facebook.com/asde.espadas.37?fref=ts

thats there facebook

2. guatape is a peaceful mountaneous area its beautiful. its about a 3 hour drive. around medellin all over. is rural farm land with lakes, they have places called fincas. its basically a ranch. you can rent a finca for the weekend. most of them have pools and you can enjoy the forest, pools lakes and whatnot. its pretty cheap if you have all the friends to chip in. they are some fincas that are like 45 min drive from the city. also there is a resort area ( http://www.skicolombia.com/ski-colombia.php ) where you can jetski . wakeboard , bike . rock climb. enjoy the scenary. if we can get enough people i would be down to go and hang out for the weekeed.

I basically did the same as you, was travelling around and bought a laptop out here to stay a few extra months and hope i could make money playing poker still having not really played much for a few years. Bought my laptop in a big exito supermarket by Poblado metro station that has a massive electronics section and is pretty decent.

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

medellin isn't so much of a late night city in the least bit...bogota has normal clubs and then a whole slew of after-hours places that open at 3am till 6 or 7am. Still tho lleras on a friday rarely dissapoints...and if it does there's always chupitos!!!

The only late night spot I know of in medellin is all Palmaira (sp?), couple miles south of poblado that has a bunch of bigger concert venues/clubs and is where we usually end up if I'm out past 2am or so.

All the grimey stuff is going on till sunrise as well in more hood parts of the city

rain kills everything in medellin. people barely go out when it rains. there are barely any taxis. its super hard to get a taxi. on a friday or saturday parque lerras is always popping.

Rainy season is coming up from what I hear. October/November. Rio Sur is a great spot to go if it rains as it's indoor with 5 clubs and a few bars inside the 7 story building.
