hey everyone, i bought a ups(uninterrupted power supply) i highly recommend a backup power supply for poker players. in medellin you can get one in the centro commercial monterrey for about 100 usd . the battery will last 12-18 minutes around. since i been here thepower went out twice in 6 months for about 15 mintues each time and once for about an hour. the backup battery basically pays for itself . also definitely by an aircard. the aircard i bought i have monthly payments of 20 usd each month. for about 2gb. wcoop coming up 150 pct focused gl to all \!!

anyways, most of my girls are fairly ugly by colombian standards, so don't really have much for ya. Thought about posting all the cupid girls that have been banged out so far but I'm sure eventually we'll get a google doc going soon enough with notes on how easy each one is and which psychos to avoid. Alot of guys have been pulling some amazing 8's and 9's, but you need to either be 7 feet tall, blond hair/RED HAIR/blue eyes or speak spanish

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

What's Medellin like if you have zero Spanish skills? Can I get by speaking just English? Also I read somewhere that the University offers free Spanish classes, is this true? I can't remember where I read this, I'll do a google search after, I guess.

Also am I able to rent anything for around $500 a month in a decent area? I have looked online but all results are aimed for the rich gringo (which I am not, yet!!) I did find a good Colombian site (searched on Colombia google) but they seem to only offer places unfurnished.

Thanks

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

Disagree.

Spanish is useful but if you learnt the basics pretty quickly you could get by and then hopefully improve over time, a lot of the people out here didn't have any spanish when they arrived. Dont know anything about free spanish classes from the University, but thats not to say it isnt true.

Also, our rent is $500 each a month and whilst its nothing super special, its a decent place in a great location. Others have been paying less rent and still had fine places

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

Good to see you guys getting down to Sabaneta! really cool/different part of town with alot of nightlife and random people ride their horses to the bar, lol.

Def need spanish, def don't need money - but depends on the type of girl you are trying to get I suppose. One thing that can blow is girls will often go out on a 'date' with you and bring a friend along. You have to pay. Even if going out in a group, guys are expected to take care of everything including taxi, drinks, food..for her and her friends besides rare exceptions. It's so cheap to spoil them a bit with a nice dinner, daytrip, date, whatever though... might as well if she's not taking advantage of it. I've had plenty of good chicks there that prefer to take the bus home rather than me pay for a cab, have never once asked me for a single penny or expected anything...and then I've had others that every couple minutes want SOMEthing, "loan me this so I can put minutes on my cellphone, gift me this pretty set of earrings on the street, buy me this food...." They are fairly easy to distinguish, and I try to put my penis inside of them as quick as possible and then leave when they play those games.

You can 'get by' just speaking english, you just won't be able to do everyday tasks, talk to people, talk to girls, get around, experience much culture other than just walking around looking at stuff...without having someone like Jose, an assistant, or a fluent roommate hold your hand. Especially in Poblado, there just aren't many english speaking locals. Around UPB, UdeA, EAFIT (Uni's)...there will be alot more people that speak english, but still nothing compared to Cartagena, Bogota, or other cities where so many more people speak english. I'd say coming to medellin for 2 weeks or a month would be fun regardless of what language you speak - but after awhile you are going to realize and get bummed on missing out on so many things due to the fact that you can't communicate. I speak relatively good spanish, my average day for the last 2 years I don't speak english at all.... and still struggle soooo much when it comes to hanging out with groups of locals. People from medellin have some crazy accents, tons of different vocab, and talk pretty quickly.

You can rent for $500 a month in decent area only if you have roommates. 3 bedroom+ and you start to save alot of money and get very decent places that break down to a pretty fair price per person.

I'm down in coffee region and never thought I'd say this, but I'm jelly of medellin's horrible but a bit better internet. I've been struggggggling down here to stay connected

Yikes, my Spanish sucks really bad. Right now I'm in Playa and it sucks pretty hard. Even here there's no guarantee people speak any English.

Lukethefluke, the others you mention do they have their own place or are they sharing?

Boliver, did you write what I think you wrote? Like in those old Western movies, they literally horse it to a night club and what not? Haha!
also thought Medellin would be the best place to learn Spanish, I thought I read that somewhere as well, might be wrong though.

I found out that night I'm allergic to horses. Only stayed for 20min. Got a bad allergic reaction and had to go home. Chest pain and could barely breath. Thought I was going to the hospital but took a shower and felt 90% better. The place is La Fonda de Tono. Was fun just sucked I had to leave.

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

yea, sabeneta is dope...lots of horsies and they tie em up outside the bar, pretty rad.

medellin is 100000% not the best place to learn spanish, but its a great place to be once you know it. Bogota always claims to have the best, most neutral spanish in south america however, and I personally confirm this. When I was a spanish noob I could understand rollos (ppl form bogota) sooo much better, and still kinda instantly know when someone is from bogota because I can actually understand them clearly.

Peru, ecuador, mexico, guatemala...maybe costa, panama would all be good choices. Worst places would be argentina, uruguay, chile, nicaragua. (as far as ease of accent goes, but Peru and ecuador are basically top 2 places in S. America for dat espanol as reported by many, many people...although I don't like ecuador much personally). I'm also biased and just don't like argentine spanish, its wayyyyy different than the rest of the continent, although def a cool place to be and a unique type of spanish

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

Can anyone share any personal or 2nd hand experiences taking any intensive Spanish classes/programs?

I can get away for 2 months, and was thinking of really learning Spanish and being down there would give me that push. Really focus on it for 2 months.

But I see so many options... University/semi-university/hostel/private classes... Hard to tell anything apart as they all have lousy descriptions. Heck, given the monthly incomes for teachers, maybe even hire a real teacher full time for 2 months?

my plan is to never speak a word of english, and enroll in a class.
I highly suggest this ^
Currently I watch spanish movies, am listening to pimsleur 3

However, I work in online tech support so I would possibly need up to 2 ISPs, and a phone data plan with wifi hotspot via the sim in my phone, and possibly a UPS for the modems, I already have laptop and extra battery and usb powersource for the phone. And to find an apartment or grinding house and get all this up and running in 4 to 6 days, do yall think this is possible? I could only take a few days off work for the relocation from the US my income would be a guranteed 3k per month minimum if I could do that successfully, if I lost that job trying this unsuccessfully I would only have a guranteed minimum income of 1k per month

I would love to move to Medellin, can yall please advise?

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

Great Post! So glad I found it! 2+2 always provides what I need.

I will be heading to Medellin this October for around 6-7 months. I have been wanting to go for several years, but have always ended up other places (Philippines and Thailand).

I'm moving down to bootstrap a new online business and based on everything I have read about the city I am making the right move!

A few questions:

How are the brick and mortar poker options? Looks like Casino Allegre (?) is a pretty nice place. Since Black Friday I have been playing a lot of live poker and have come to enjoy it.

I am probably going to stray away from playing online as I will be working in front of a screen A LOT!

Is it easy to get out of the city and into the country? It looks like a mountainous area...which I love. Honestly, I get sick in cities from the smog and usually have to GET OUT every week or so. This is after being in Manila, Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Maybe Medellin is different?

Thanks again for the post. Great info!

Re: **** Official Medellin Colombia Thread***

My friend and I are planning to rent a penthouse in Medellin in the next few weeks look forward to meeting you guys . I have a a few questions

1)Do you guys have a specific taxi driver of " fixer" that you all use ?
I usually try to stick with 1 taxi driver for safety and easiness.

2)What are the shipping options to colombia ? I have a large desktop I'm trying to bring down.

3)How expensive are electronics in colombia . I would like to buy 1-2 monitors when I get there .

4) what are the best " strip clubs " in medellin . Best meaning hottest women and slim chance of bad things happening ?

Medellin sounds like the perfect work hard play hard city and I'm pumped to get to explore
