I am an ex pokerplayer who now works in the crypto industry. Looking to move to Medellin, wanted to check if any pokerplayers have a room. Or have good agents that can help me?

Gringo groups on Facebook have some decent places at good prices. I just found a decent place on airbnb, but generally airbnb is more expensive

online sports betting is now legal here and i'm sure online poker won't be far behind. could be quite fishy when they get it running.

Updating this thread in case anyone comes looking. Strong expat home game scene in Medellin. I played at casino Rio, they are running two games, a 2k/5k (150k min) and a 5k/10k (500k min) no max on either table. Games apparently run monday-friday. Expat games run sat&sunday.

In general, medellin is quite nice. Weather is good, women are beautiful, food is .. affordable .

Wouldn't really recommend it without basic spanish, but a fine place if you want to learn. You can also get by with no spanish if you stick to poblado area. A bit more expensive and a lot more gringos and businesses catering to them. Also where the casinos are.

Budget for a room is 800k-1.5M depending on what you are looking for, furnished apartments start at about 1M and go up as high as you like. For about 4M a month you can have an extremely nice place with 24 security, etc.

Hey gang,

I'll be coming to Medellin for a couple month in early April and will be itching to play some live poker. I've read about the Rio Casino being the spot to go, but wondering if anybody has any up to date (2019ish) info on the poker room there (stakes, hours, variety of games, level of competition), it would be much appreciated!

Also if anyone wants to get some drinks or hit the city in any fashion, let me know!

Tchau!

On the off chance that any NLHE (ideally live) player in Medellin is looking to try their hand at coaching, I'd like to volunteer as guinea pig. I can dedicate ~2 hours daily to study, review and online practice daily and about 1-2 sessions of live games per week. Would like to play live games at max 5/5 blinds, ideally 2/5 or lower.

None of the sites from the Chico network open either i.e. they're blocked like Stars, Party, etc

The ones from Winning poker say they don't allow people NOT from the US to cash out.

And PPPoker is also blocked.

Any other suggestions?
Where can I play online poker from Colombia?

Thanks! I appreciate it would really like to play a bit.

yeh man its gotten pretty grim here, but you can def play on WPN still, or yeh pp poker. You just have to download the pp on vpn. But there arent many poker players left here. maybe 4-6 I know about in medellin.

hola amigos!

i am in Medellin for the next month and am interested in playing some live poker. i’ve done a little research and have gathered that casino rio and casino san fernando have been good options in the past. is this still the case? all the information i have found is fairly dated.

i’ve also read of a solid expat home game scene. can anyone fill me in further?

muchas gracias por todo!

Hey I was there for a couple months in 2018, I only played at Casino Rio and heard that was pretty much the only place, I think San Fernando ran some PLO, at least when I was there. The casino rio game was somewhat hit and miss, you never knew what kind of a game you'd get or how long it would run. Most days there was a 2k/5k game (exchange rate is like COP3400:$1), sometimes this game was good sometimes it was just a bunch of short stacks, like the one day this dude sat down with 4 million pesos so 800BB and lost it in 3 hours. Then there was sometimes a 5k/10k game running which was usually good.

And yeah there is supposed to be an alright expat home game. I mostly played in Bogota when I was in Colombia, Medellin is too nice to play a lot of poker.

went and played san fernando on monday, game was good but lots of short stacks. i went back today and apparently the whole casino has been shut down. my spanish isnt good enough to know why but there was a notice on the window and the security guard said “no mas casino” so...

will check out rio this week or next and report back once more. also learned of a home game and plan to check that out as well.

I played in Casino Rio last month. First time I went was 9pm Saturday night, I stood around the poker tables hoping to find someone on the floor to ask about the games, but it didn't appear that anyone was interested in helping me out. Eventually they finally called someone who informed me there was no cash games going, they were just finishing up a tournament. All in Spanish, no English. So much for crazy weekend poker action!

Then I went again on a Thursday night, they had a table of 200k/500k ($.75/1.50). Pretty boring game, lots of short stacks, nobody talking etc. 30 minutes in I added 500k and the chip lady put 400k in big chips in front of me and I just assumed she was going to get another 100k in small chips. Nope. Then when I asked where my other 100k was she said I only bought 400k. The supervisor was called, he agreed with the chip runner, didn't check any tapes, and then I cashed out and left. It's possible I can't count out 5 bills, but I highly highly doubt it. So yeah, pretty poor experience with poker in Medellin.

I had much better time playing in Bogota. More action, and wayyyyyy friendlier to non Spanish speakers.
