Just curious, why Medellin and not Bogota?

medellin has better weather, is safer, and has a larger grinder community. these aren't really up for debate.

medellin arguably has nicer people, better nightlife, and better girls than bogota as well.

bogota nightlife prob best in colombia, fwiw... way more mega clubs, an entire selection of places that open at 3am till 7am for afterhours (medellin shuts down at 2am besides Palmaira), way more university students and less grillas, places are actually packed (besides lleras... la 70, 80, 33, la villa, university bars are always fairly empty). Can party 7 days a week and not the weekend-only party culture of mde. Spanish is 10x easier in bogota with what many consider to be the clearest spanish in S. America.

I find people in bogota much much nicer and genuinely interesting, not as money-grubbing/vain/plastic/shallow and the girls there like gringos to practice english with and learn about their countries... not just a free drink ticket for the night. but hands down they are nottt as pretty. More live action if you care, much better food options, arguably much better degenerate..hooker/whorehouse action (an entire neighborhood dedicated to this). better internet.

Bogota is def more expensive, public transport is absolute crap, always cloudy, rains more, more street dogs and dangerous areas at night. It's so close to being an awesome city but just comes up short for me.

Dealbreaker on Bogota for me is the altitude but I'm a vag when it comes to that.

Top statement 100% accurate. 2nd statement, I can't confirm as I haven't been to Bogata, but everyone in Medellin said the same thing Verbatim. Of all the places I have ever lived, Medellin, hands down was the best! If I weren't involved in a business venture that required me to be living in the US, I would move back in a heartbeat!

I'm not sure about the rest of the post, but agree completely with these points. Bogota feels like a more international city, more opportunities to do normal things, meet normal people. Medellin might not be the super dangerous place it was 20 years ago, but it seemed to me that the culture had not changed much.

If you don't mind ****ty weather and want to interact with humans, I'd recommend Bogota. If you want a place with nice weather and put in a ton of hours and save money, Medellin is pretty good for that.

Overall murder rate is pretty much irrelevant for the average poker n00b. As in most places, homicides in Medellin and Bogota are generally isolated to neighborhoods that poker players would never visit. Plus dead gringos is bad for business, so that's usually out of the equation even in a worse-case scenario.

As the U.S. Department of State says, "The most prevalent threat to Americans in Colombia’s largest cities is street crime, including, but not limited to, muggings, assaults, cell phone theft, credit card/ATM card fraud, and burglaries." Most people--both Colombians and foreigners--would agree that Bogota is more dangerous in that respect (although I haven't seen any statistics to back it up). That's been my impression as well, but I'd say they're definitely in the same ballpark, i.e. have to be equally careful in both.

The statistics I've seen say Medellin is worse in pretty much every category they have, though I agree it certainly seems the other way around and I have no idea who is keeping those stats since most crimes aren't even reported.

yea F stats when it comes to the corrupt 3rd world with vastly different political agendas...spend some time in each place. bogota is fairly sketch, with a large portion of the city being akin to medellin's centro/prado area at night. Cali is also hood as hell (also better nightlife than mde). Medellin is the one city that gringos really are not justified in all the colombian fear mongering going on, but again that depends. place will eat you alive if you are the type of person that allows that to happen..honestly im surprised there havent been more horror stories from the influx of poker players there yet

bogota is a much bigger city, so obviously there is more crime and more dangerous areas. there is also a lot more money and lot more nice areas too.

most of Medellin is more dangerous than Prado Centro, but gringos aren't usually going those places anyway. all the hostels in Bogota are in la candelaria and in medellin in el poblado. so you have gringos congregating in the safest part of Medellin and in a dangerous part of Bogota. Probably explains why they usually think Bogota is way more dangerous.

when i moved to colombia I spent some time in both cities first and had some rolo friends whom seriously where convinved i would be kidnapped and murdered on arrival in medellin. conversly my wife's family thinks bogota is the most dangerous place on earth soley because they watch caracol/rcn all day long and the bogota news it's whats shown on there.

I'm interested as well from May onward. 28 from Venezuela, play mostly 200nl 6m.

Have traveled to Medellin twice before, last time was around 2008. That place is truly awesome, I really want to go back and grind there for a while.

Medellin is played out. I'd rather hear about Venezuela!

Do you ever have trouble getting the true exchange rate? Is counterfeit currency a day-to-day issue?

Venezuela is good if u:

- Like living in the country with the second highest murder rate in the world.
- Like living in the country with the worst economy in the world.
- Like queuing up to buy basic goods, which you can only do once a week.
- Like having to go through a shady black market to convert your currency to ours.
- Like having only 1 broadband internet service provider, which drops all the time.

On a serious note, the only +side to here would be that u can live waaay above average if you are making $300 a month.
