We were going to move to Bogota before we ended up moving back to Colorado. Found an apartment, listed not though an agency. They wanted all the same bs. Got all the co-sign **** done, bank statements, etc, was going to pay the entire rent up front, which was a lot (3bedroom estrato6 in santa barbara). Had the contract drawn up and then they backed out. Was so damn mad moved us to Denver.

Agencies in Bogota wouldn't accept owners of properties in Medellin as co-signers, had to be property located in Bogota. It's such a joke.

Yeah I had the same problems in Bogota. I ended up renting a ****box in Candelaria that was foreign friendly.

One time I found this balling apartment in Valledupar for like 400 a month and I couldnt get the co-signers. They wouldnt even take an entire year in advance rent.

You're either really poor or delusional, or both. There's a huge opportunity cost to "pounding the pavement" for anyone who actually earns a decent living, especially people who speak minimal Spanish.

It's perfectly fine that you enjoy living like a poor, but it's not for everyone. There's obviously a lot of hassle that goes with getting the local "market rate" for an apartment. It's not always lazy or stupid to pay more for convenience, especially if you're only coming for a few months. Simply knowing that you'll have good Internet as soon as you show up should be enough to make a poker house +EV for any decent grinder.

The last apartment I rented in Medellin was 3 bedrooms, in a nice neighborhood and cost 520,000 a month. There are also 3 bedroom apartments that cost 10,000,000 or more per month.

You probably don't unless you want live in belen or centro or similar areas(which is perfectly fine but you don't see many gringos doing this). This was 5 years ago (the peso was 1750 then).

But there are tons of places for slightly more in Estadio, La Floresta and around or Envigado and Sabaneta. Found a few searching in El Colombiano right now.

Places like this http://www.masificados.com/propiedad...353386/-650000

Walk up, no portero. Perfectly safe though imo. WIll need co-signers with property and income.

I haven't considered browsing websites in Spanish. Thanks for the insight.

Is the co-signer problem a Colombia thing? Do you have the same **** in other parts of South America?

Even if you take long let, you pay 3x the price just for speaking English.

Who would expect that?

Really, you don't. Gringos like to talk about the gringo price, but there are aparment agencies all over the country renting furnished apartments to Colombians on vacation or business and the prices are the same.

You are paying for the convenience of having everything set up for you in advance. Those places aren't intended as long term rentals.

If you are staying long term, get a visa and figure out how to rent locally. It's not impossible. Or just 'pound the pavement', you can pay almost nothing if you really want. My wife's friend rents rooms in her house in Robledo for 50mil a month. Just don't cross any fronteras invisibles on your way home.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but the prices for furnished vacation rentals marketed to Colombians in Spanish and the prices for comparable rentals marketed to foreigners in English are NOT the same! This is just basic information asymmetry that happens in pricing for anything in any market.

aguillas negras back doing their 'social cleansing' last night, at least in san antonio de prado and I'm sure other lower strata neighborhoods. be careful guys if you are into degen activities mid-week. They specifically said they aren't doing anything on the weekends. Look em up if you think this may apply to you and ur in mde

why? really not that hood. I mean centro, aranjuez, santo domingo, bello... all places you might say the same about but im the farrrr from the toughest dude around and never had problems.

If ur with locals ur generally good so I guess its a moot point I bring up, locals they will know when the social cleansings are happening and the strata 9 fear monger ex-pats will usually stay in their cages anyways. Barrio antioquia is similar and the 24/7 drug spot that at least half of us have been to past 1am I'm sure.

anyways same thing has happened at mayorista in the past, and im sure if anyone has ever left poblado to go degen then they've ended up there. Was just a bit surprised to hear aguilla negras doing this crap again as its been a few years afaik - they hand out papers a couple nights before letting the residents know that on X date they are gonna come through and raid/shoot/terrorize ppl on the streets past midnight.

I'm in istanbul now and seems wayyyyyyy more sketchy than anything in mde. Enjoy medellin and stay safe, ill be back for feria

Hey guys. I just moved to Medellin today. I'm staying at an Airbnb for a few days while looking for a temporary location for a couple months and then going to go from there. Is anyone looking for a roommate soon? Please pm me if you are. Or if you're looking to play basketball, poker or lift lol.

true istanbul really seems more sketchy than most places, streets are often maze-like and kinda dark . nonetheless the risk of getting mugged as an obvious tourist even in poorer areas is way smaller than for a non-spanish speaking gringo in the wrong areas of medellin . its just that the turkish mentality especially on basars can be really annoying at times, and the risk of getting ripped off doing business is higher for that reason but its really unlikely to get robbed or even get a target of violence there

still medellin is one of the greatest cities ive ever been to and obv not as dangerous as some people say it is, especially if u stick to the simple rules of common sense
