im life tilted and need to think of happier thoughts

what are the flaws in my plan?

go to columbia, get a semi nice apartment in a safe area of medellin for $500ish a month, $300ish more on food and necessities a month, have a $700 a month hooker budget and have two really hot girls a week come visit me

is this doable long term?

Doable if you know Spanish well otherwise you will get screwed. Probably won't be able to live in El Poblado with this budget unless you want to share apartment and /or increase your apartment budget. Again if you want to spend around 1k$for food and apartment you should look for cheaper areas laureles maybe??? And don't go without at least upper intermediate Spanish, trust me.

No point of going if you can't speak decent Spanish to be honest. It was the reason why I moved back to Thailand.

Cost of living are +30-40% compared to Bangkok (and that's optimistic assumption).

Your hooker budget is also way underestimated. The high quality clubs in safe neighborhoods like Fase 2, La Isla (strip clubs) are like 150$ per visit in my experience (probably more). To get some cheap quality sex you would have to go down the hill but you don't know Spanish and it is dangerous there. It is not Thaialand when you can be stone cold drunk at 2 am in some random neighborhood and feel relartively safe.

cash games at casino rio in san diego daily from 2-3pm onwards.

normally 2,000/5,000 NLH max rake 12,000, min buy-in 200,000,
and 5,000/10,000 NLH max rake 15,000, min buy-in 500,000

rake is taken as cards are dealt rather than a % as long as pot is over 100,000. e.g. 5k on flop, 5k if turn is dealt and 5k if river is dealt.

if its a bad game with small pots then rake is unbeatable but usually games are okay

sometimes PLO runs as well and is craaaaazy

all games have unlimited straddle either utg or otb and people frequently put 100k+ out there

I posted this in the Bogota thread, but I'll also ask here!

What is the cost of living for someone who would plan to live a modest life there? By that I mean a decent 1 BR apartment, going out maybe once or twice a week and not a lot of travel.

Also, I am mainly a low stakes live grinder, I don't play a whole lot online so I am looking at somewhere with a low cost of living that has regular cash games at casinos. Do they typically run 24/7, or at least most of the day? And what stakes?

Thanks so much for this thread!

Just read this legends blog on the PI!

For sure buff on the Spanish or stay in Asia, but if u came to Colombia with 1500 budget u will do fine as u are a nit bag who will adapt fine and find all the hooker angles.

Would u do a nomadic colombia blog, that would be dope.

Heading to Medellin for July and August and I am considering where to live. Laureles sounds cool, Poblado might be nice as well. Ideally I want to live with poker players or Spanish speakers, or both! Alone would be fine too, figure I'll just check Airbnb and post here. Anyone think they will have an open room in July/August? Lordjose?

I can teach Chinese or Spanish or Omaha H/L in exchange (and yes I have enough $).

31 years old, plan on playing a lot of poker, but I like to stay active and go out now and then too.

Thinking about trying out Medellin for a bit - are there any nice serviced apartments someone can recommend or should I just rent off airbnb? Any poker houses looking for people?

I am looking for something kind of nice... not too snobby, but you know... clean and decent and well located.

Thanks to everyone for this thread - really helpful and some great stuff in here.

Question for those in the know: I read the posts on the live poker scene in Medellin and from that have a decent gauge on what it's like. But if anyone could offer more details on it I'd appreciate it, specifically:

1. If I'm not fluent in Spanish, would that be an impediment at the tables? From my time spent in Colombia, I'm guessing the dealers won't speak any English - is this the case?

2. If I only played live poker (without anyone online), are there enough sustainable games that I could do so in Medellin? I've played live almost exclusively the past handful of years and feel like that's where I'm at my best. Is there enough of a live cash game scene in Medellin that I can find a solid game most days of the week?

Thanks again for all the thoughts and input in this thread.

Do some of you guys also have experience in living in Bogota?

What are the advantages in living at Medellin over Bogota?
Is it only the climate?
From what I have heard women shall rank higher in bogota (more hotties), but dunno if that is correct.

Also regards to Spanish:
Is Spanish a kind of easy language like English where you can expect that after 1 year of studying it, you can have real deeper verbal communications?

Also what is the monthly rent for a nice condo-studio in Medellin?
And finally, what is the visa-situation on Columbia? Is it difficult to stay/live there longtime?

Thanks a lot!

I will be in Colombia from August 11th to the 19th. Anyone know of anything good going on, or what Casino(s) I should check out while I'm there? Also, if anyone wants to meet up and show us some good bars or food let me know!

I did Airbnb and found a nice place, but it seems there are other options as well. Some people talked about pounding pavement and asking around if your Spanish is good. If not, maybe someone else has a recommendation.

I can only speak to Medellin, where the women are hot but mostly want your money, but there are a few pages in this thread that discuss the differences between Medellin and Bogota, including info about the womenssss.

If you are living here and studying at the same time somewhat intensely, one year would be enough. Studying at home for one year and then coming here might be a little tricky.

For living, it looks like you can find places ranging from $300usd/month up to maybe $2000. Even more I assume if you want ultra-baller. Just depends on what you are looking for and whether you expect to share with roommates.

Visa is 90 days I believe and there may be ways to extend it. Pretty sure all of this is explained in the first few pages of this thread.

Finally, story time. I guess you can add me to the list of people who have been robbed. There was a huge futbol game yesterday and tons of people were hanging out in the streets next to the stadium. Being curious and seeing far too many hot girls, I tried to mingle a little. Found some cool people who shared their drinks and smokes, but when I walked over to buy more booze, a few guys surrounded me, snatched my phone out of my pocket, and straight-up stole my alcohol.

Obviously the lesson is don't take your phone out to something like this (and I had not even pulled it out of my pocket once), but I was a little surprised this happened right there in public. There were even police nearby, but of course they didn't give a ****....

On that note, I am pretty sick of everyone asking me for money here. If you have no shoes and look like you haven't eaten all day, that is one thing, but if you are well-dressed and carrying a bag of fresh groceries or a smart phone, then GTFO please. If you are a gringo everyone thinks you are an ATM. I don't even dress flashy and my Spanish is pretty good, but wow.
