so you're staying in Macau then to Xian then back to HK? Seems like a lot more work then doing HK and Macau together.

You want to spend 1/4 of your time in Beijing shopping for stuff in a land where you don't speak the local language, have no idea where to start and will pay 2x for same jacket you'd buy back home?

Good luck with that.

Also second Problem Eliminator that your itinerary is ass backwards. A natural route would be Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, HK/Macau. Swapping Shanghai in for NYE understandable for parties but logistically unsound and you mentioned a budget - hence a Shanghai NYE you'll drop a few hundred as opposed to maybe a few dozen bucks if you did it in Xi'an instead.

Hong Kong and Macau are literally an hour apart by ferry... insanity to split them up with Xi'an which is essentially another continent away.

Flights were significantly cheaper to go back north to xian ironically. Not too fussed about it. Not overly price sensitive re shopping as Aus is super exp anyway. It's summer here so just ns the range available will be satisfactory.

He lives in Australia, he doesn't need to buy a good brand. He can just buy a cheap knock off that will fall apart in a few months.

The guys have commented on the weird Macau->Xian->HK route, as its pretty crazy jumping from one to another etc

Im hoping you play poker, as 3 days in Macau will be long without gambling, there is literally maybe 2-3 hours of sight seeing, and then you are stuck. A couple of my Aussie friends have come over for 2-3 days and by the second day cut it short, as its nothing like Vegas/crown etc

As for shopping you really aren't going to find huge deals on anything when compared to Aus prices, especially without speaking the language. The best deals are on taobao, where the shops sell the exact same stuff but 10x the price.... Id reccomend that if you have your hotels booked, just order on taobao and get it delivered to the hotel, much easier.

yeah maybe you're right i should have just copped it but too late now oh well im not too fussed.

My GF colleague is from macau so we'l hang out with him for a day and maybe just relax the next day. we thought it would break up all the heavy tourist stuff we'd be doing. will hit the tables a little bit, kinda have too. been a while since i played poker though.

might just have do some shopping here tomorrow it seems.

for 18days you guys reckon i can spend 6k AUD (appx 4200USD)? not inc accom or flights

How long is a piece of string
In all seriousness that's around $340 a day so around $2k HKD, a decent meal for two in Macau will set you back minimum 600hkd with a min bet in table games of $300HKD, so play around those numbers. If you want to get drunk for minimal overhead go to venetian/MGM/studio City and play slots (25c/50c HKD) they give out drinks for free.

In HK depending on your taste its around the same, with a normal beer being 50-60hkd and meals can sky rocket if you are in tourist areas. Research is key here, with a ton of places having really good brunch/free flow deals, hit up facebook for a ton of cheaper places.

If you are familiar with Sydney, Macau prices are similar to circular key/rocks, where Hong Kong is more cheaper options and china is just well china

You can easily get a place at One-Oasis for around 12-13k, they have a shuttle bus, the downside is that its on the Cologne side, and is a little further out, but people living there seem to dig it.

Prices have dropped quite substantially, but be careful as prices on Chinese new year sky rocket to insanity.

Just finished in Beijing and heading to shanghai tomorrow. Getting good Internet is a real pain in the ass.

I'm trying to use vpn master app but between my **** wifi and their bad connection servers is not getting too far.

Is there a good prepaid SIM card I can get for data only?

thatll be difficult to do without the language and you'll still have VPN issues but they're super cheap and just just copy paste a phrase I'll write at the bottom here, <100 will get you a sim and should have enough data on budget already in there to last rest of trip, if not then you can get a 充值卡 recharge at any shop and if you act helpless enough they'll charge your phone for you.

我要买个sim卡,不用聊天和发短信只需要上网。在香港也需要用这个卡。

I prefer Unicom but not sure which is better for hk/Macau. Either way I'd just not do it because your connection will be roaming for majority of remaining trip outside the mainland.

Hello, I will travel to Macau in May for one night and stay at the Rio Hotel. Anyone know if they have daily tournaments? What are the blind levels?

PS: My English is not very good :P

Thoughts on what to do for a ~20 hour layover in Shanghai? I land at 3:45 PM and leave 11:40 AM the next day.

i like bars & restaurants, walking around cool neighborhoods or in nice parks. One or two museums might be good. Maybe see some touristy stuff if it isn't ridiculously crowded and doesn't involve waiting in a long line. Might need a good value hotel sort of near airport in a fun nightlife area(or hostel if I can have my own room or ensure my **** won't be taken.)
