Welcome to Shanghai, do you play Pokerstars? What kind of game do you play? I tried withdrawing once with Pokerstars and they sent me cheque, that the only available withdrawing method for PS customers in China.
The cheque will take around 1 month to arrive.

Hey, thanks. I do play on Pokerstars, I play midstakes hunl and 6max games. Wow, a month is a real long time for a check to get here. I wonder if Pokerstars will priority ship it. I guess I'm going to try the Click2pay method for now.

Do you live in Shanghai?

I wish I saw this thread earlier. I have a lot of family in Guangzhou and I was there from Aug 17th to Sept 11th. I would have loved to play in some home games. My cousin and his buddies are degenerate gamblers. Every night we would go to saunas, and they would play this 3 person card game called Da dei ju till the morning. They will probably like poker.

Prostitution and drugs are also "illegal"... but like most things, people turn a blind eye to this stuff in China.

If you ever walk around the area where the Garden Hotel is in Guangzhou, you ll almost be harassed by the Africans in that area selling drugs. On a 5 minute walk in the area, a foreigner will be approached numerous times by them trying to sell ****. They're worse then the beggars imo....

You'll also see gambling everywhere in China, with people sitting around on sidewalks, and in tea houses gambling, as well as everywhere else...

Anyone on here live in Shenzhen? When I was in Macau the other week, I met some people living there. I guess they have a real good poker scene going, with games at some tea house just about everyday.

Cops dont turn a blind eye to those ladyboys at tang though, hah

Tell CK i said whats up habbit.....

habbit lives 20mins from the heart of Guangzhou in a gated community 3bedroom 2 bath nice backyard with pond for around 650us a month for rent and fees.

Visa situation changed right around march/april, i got lucky and got a 1year, 90day stay, multiple entry visa at the start of march... but if your visa is multiple entry every 60days just hop over to macau and get another 60days.

update: our plan is:

26th Dec to 30th Dec: Beijing
30th Dec to 4th Dec: Hong Kong + Macau

- What hotels would you recommend?

- I know it's such a short time but what should we go see in Beijing?

- Where would be best to spend new years eve - HK or Macau?

- Should base ourselves in HK then do a couple of night trips to Macau to go casino/party or worth spending 2 nights in HK and 2 nights in Macau?

Hong Kong is better for New Year's Eve.
I'd spend 3 nights in HK and do an overnight trip to Macau.

cool thanks, we'll find a hotel in HK and do an overnight trip to Macau.

i have no idea about beijing vs shanghai, i am tempted though as my 2 friends ill be going with cannot stay longer than the 4th, i may do it myself? just book myself on to a couple of tours in shanghai? though would require an extra flight + extra nights stay and although i dont want to spend too much (only big thing would be a good hotel, but we'd get some book room where all 3 of us can sleep in so should bring cost down).

thanks for your thoughts

john

Beijing has better sightseeing, Shanghai has better food and nightlife (imo). Really can't go wrong with either choice though. HK is great for NY eve though, make sure to go up to the peak at night.

Everyone counts Guangzhou out of their China trip, but it is the most famous city in China for food. More restaurants here then any other city in China and I'd say the nightlife is pretty decent here too.

IMO... go to Shanghai, then fly into Guangzhou for a day or two (Cheaper flying within mainland China), then you can just take the train, ferry, or bus, into HK. Guangzhou is 2 hours away from HK, and a 90 minute drive to the border in Macau.

You could also throw Shenzhen into the mix of things too if your trying to see alotta places.

Is it possible to get a Macau Visa for a stay greater than 30 days (and without getting a job)?

I know you can go to Hong Kong and then go back but I also read that if you do that they only grant you an additional 20 days. What if you wanted to stay for 6 months+?

just got back from CHINA (10 days)

I probably would have skipped over Macau if I knew how standard the poker would be. We went on a saturday and there were like 3 tables running at the Lisboa. I think 25/50 was the highest. Played some 10/20hkd for a few hours with mostly KOREANS who were all pretty solid. the ones who could speak english decently were very friendly however and I had an OK time. they told me the WALDO was pretty dead and was struggling to get even 30 people for tournaments so I didn't even bother going over there (the casinos are all really spread out and you have to take a bus around). Was excited to get back to HONG KONG where the majority of my trip would be spent

HONG KONG is pretty kick ass. I was staying in Kowloon, across a bridge from HK. Good times just walking around taking in the sights. plenty of shopping, food, drinks, and the girls...wow the girls are just beautiful and apparently short skirts and boots are "IN" w/ 90% of the hot ones this season and it was v hard not to stare. couple this w/ the fact there are lady pimps, gogo bars, and "karaoke clubs" like every other block it can be a very fun and tempting place for a single guy.

Also spent 3 days in Shenzhen for a wedding. Not as fun as HK (where'd all the pretty girls go) but still a cool place. Obviously not as affluent and business minded as HK. More of a real less-touristy experience but I enjoyed it all the same. Dim sum was gewt. I highly recommend a foot massage/pedicure, it was something like 7 bucks US for 90 minutes and was really nice.

New to the travel section...

I live in NYC right now but I just learned I'm being transferred to Hong Kong in mid January for ~2 years. Any suggestions on where to live or any other major tips about moving over there? Also anyone have any good suggestions on best ways (besides craigslist and hiring a broker) to re-lease an apartment in nyc? I will have 9 months left on the sublet unfortunately.
