Also what bluegrass said about the air x10000000000000

apprently the passed a new law prohibiting a certian kind of air pollution. I dont know enough about air mechanics to know if it will have an effect. Nor weather it will be enforced.

So I'm leaving for China in a week and I was just wondering if there was anything in general you guys wished you would have known or anything you would have done differently before coming to China for the first time?

dont get ripped off by ppl sellling imitation products : ). if you try buy something and ask how much. if they say like 300rmb tell them u'l buy for like 80 or something.

but good rule of thumb is around 1/4 the price they offer.

and where u going to in china?

BTW anyone in Beijing? im here for school would b cool to know a few more friends : )

Yeah im here.

Also pretty much what speedy said about getting ripped off price wise.

Starting at around 25-30% or lower of their original selling price is usually good way to go. Dont be afraid of offending them, and dont be afraid to walk away. Usually when you start to walk away they will give it to you at that price.

Further more if you go on any tours our here they always bring you to the tourist traps like a jade factory or a tea place. best not to walk in, and dont buy anything.

excellent bargaining advice.

its actually seems standard for the sellers of goods to chase after you yelling cheaper prices lol.

Agree with the above. I would take it further and say that if you actually make a purchase at the first place you go to, you are doing it wrong.
If you offer a ridiculously low price and they accept it too easily you have paid too much. You should always have your offer rejected outright at the first shop, then you know that offer is too low and you can go a bit higher at the next shop.

Buy any train tickets in advance...

Dont ever i mean ever walk into any tea house!

You dont offend them by offering 10-30% of the asking price for anything you buy (not food). Insist until they give you the price you want!
Even if is cheap compared to the price back home, remember you are in CHINA! Where they pay 5 cents an hour for labor! Cheap yourself out!

be very careful about signing a teaching contract. Make sure they will give you a work visa, pay for housing and a decent base salary. They should also be paying for your plane ride. Read the contract thoroughly and make sure you have a copy for yourself.

Make sure to talk to the other teachers (without a chinese employee around) about the school and what you need to ask for before you sign the contract.

As far as bargaining it's best not to give a number. The reason they quote such a high number is that it's generally a given rule that whoever gives a real number first is going to be the one getting screwed. Feign disinterest for a long time and then when you think they are starting to get to the real numbers, offer a much much much lower price. This is especially true for tourist towns like Guilin and Yangshuo. When I went there I think the most I paid for something was 5-10% of what their original asking price was. Prices are marked up a ton.

Edit: this might be regional, but be careful with your drinks when you're in a bar too.

If you do not have a working visa any contract you sign will have absolutely no use if it requires you to work. It cannot protect you if the company tries to screw you.

Not sure if this is still the case, but in almost all bars the more expensive liquor is not real. Not make you blind fake, but still fake. Drink bottled beer imo.

Also if you ever endeavour to get KTV girls drunk, don't let them use chaser for shots, they will take the shot, and then spit it out into the chaser bottle. Oldest trick in the book!

Well I just missed my flight To hong kong. I didn't have proof that I was going to leave hk and to go to china. I spent like an hour trying to find somewhere online that I could book a bus or train ticket from hong kong to Shenzhen or wherever, but I found it incredibly difficult. Anyway they rebooked me for tomorrow, but can someone please please find me somewhere to book an online train or bus ticket from hk to either shenzen, Guangzhou or Guilin? I would really appreciate it

That's the most outrageous thing I've ever heard....

Where are you from again?

Do you have your travel or work visa? That should be enough proof, although I've never heard of anyone needing proof of this before. You should have 30 days free to go to HK. If you don't have a visa yet you'll need to spend the night in HK and get one.

You don't need a bus to Shenzhen, can just take the metro and walk across. From there you'll need to take a bus to Guilin. Your company didn't walk you through all this already?

I'm from the US, I've got my tourist visa to China, and I tried to tell them I just planned on taking a bus or train across from the border after I got there, but apparently that was not gonna fly. They said they needed actually proof that I was going into China. It was all very frustrating, especially because there are timetables online everywhere, but no where to actually book online. Ugh

You're the first person I've ever heard of this happening to. I don't really know what proof you could possibly show either... I mean you're just going to walk across the border.

Who was preventing you from going and demanding proof?

It was the people from the airline (cathay pacific). I was trying to check in and they told me I couldn't unless I had some sort of documentation of my itinerary. They said when I arrived in Hong Kong it would be required.

I should have asked more questions because now that I think more about it the dumber it seems. But I was too busy scrambling around trying to find a god damn place to book a bus or train ticket.

I always fly Cathay Pacific and they have never said anything like that to me. That's also completely wrong as I've gone into HK at least 15 times now and have never been asked that.

Did you call for a manager? I guess the best thing to do is to call Cathat Pacific and ask them wtf they're doing.
