I'm reasonably sure that a Swedish friend of mine accessed his moneybookers from China without an issue. If you create the account from within China you will have an issue if you try to deposit to gambling sites; I would use a VPN if this is the case.

People saying you can withdraw/deposit using China Merchant bank, does this mean if I move to shanghai, I can open an account here and withdraw from stars?

Since it's just account to account transfer, I'm sure it's fine. You can do it with Bank of China, so I don't see why ICBC wouldn't be OK. In any case I think the fee is 0.5% or 1% if you don't use merchant's bank.

I've been to Yangshuo and did some rock climbing there through a company called "China Climb" which had a bunch of Aussie/Brit instructors. Was pretty fun

When I was in Macau I actually found near www.xe.com rates at some of the vendors on the streets. You'll have to shop around a bit, but the vendor I went to was nearby to the Wynn. The casinos were no where close to these rates.

Yes - don't exchange at casinos, their rates are terrible.

I believe the bank they use is the Merchant's bank (wont have a fee that way) but you can also use Bank of China or w/e. This info is a couple years old though so things may be different now.

Cheers,
I have a slight issue. Although I have been 20 months in China playing by VPN with my hometown accounts I have been forced to change my address at PS because of the gaming regulation approved in my home country.

So now my location appears as China in PS although the options for deposit/withdraw for MB or similar have disappeared in my cashier, I asked PS how to deposit but I am still waiting for their answer. Did any of you also change the location on PS to China?

Although I only play several tournaments on PS I am still waiting to see what will happen to the other sites after the regulation and if they will still be available in the "black market"

Apparently I have gone crazy; I'm moving Hong Kong in mid January, while waiting for admission decisions for various Masters in Europe for next fall. I'm planning to study cantonese as intensively as I can and also look for jobs.

- Considering it is such short notice (mid jan), what's the best alternative for studying cantonese? I've talked to HKU and they're saying I can't start any sooner than April. Meanwhile Hong Kong Language Learning Centre have 10 day crash courses, available from feb 2nd.

- As for accomodation, where should I look for short term apartments? Want to move in ASAP, willing to pay at least $1k/month, maybe $1.5k if necessary. Good areas to live? Good internet sites to look for apartments? Look in schools etc?

- Best way to get to know people? I'm a 26 yrs old male and don't speak any chinese.

Any other tips? Will I have a good time?

If you don't speak any Chinese, I would suggest learning Mandarin in Shanghai or Taipei over Cantonese in Hong Kong any day. For both the usability of language standpoint as well as having a good time. Hong Kong is not as much fun as Taiwan/China IMO, and most Cantonese speakers also speak Mandarin, so..

Should have been clearer - I'm definitely going to Hong Kong, so the question is only whether cantonese or mandarin is more worthwhile in HK...

i have a 2 bedroom apartment for rent in Macau main island. Available starting early Jan to Feb possibly later. less than 5 mins walk to senado square. about 7 mins walk to grand lisboa hotel close to poker action. Wynn poker room is right around 10 mins. Basic 2 bedroom with A/C, TV , Kitchen, Mini Balcony, for the most part furnished. 700+ square feet. Nothing fancy but does the job. Good short term option for poker players.

PM if interested

thanks

For someone who likes hiking, camping and breathtaking scenery where in China would you recommend. Do they have national parks and backcountry hiking stuff like you would find out west in the United States? Also what are your thoughts on the city of Gulian? I'm thinking about teaching there for 5 months.

if I remember correctly I went here with family like 5 years back. I don't remember much. But I do remember fresh air and clean. Much cleaner and nothing like the big city of guangzhou.

my memory is vague but all I remember is they have the most amazing fish dish ever.it was fried with some sort of sweet chili like sauce. best fish I've ever had. tasted so fresh
