Yep...Poker Stars and Party Poker are both blocked in China. You might try a VPN to get around that.

Does anyone know if any of the casinos in Macau offer safety deposit box services? Not the in-room safes in the hotel rooms but more like the ones in banks.

In 5-star hotels, they have the depositbox service at the reception.

Would like to but it is blocked here in China. Can get on pokerstars.net but that is not for real money. Do you play on Pokerstars? Are you here in China? If so, how do you access it?

Use www.strongvpn.com

connect to your internet
connect to your vpn
then log in to pokerstars
after connected with pokerstars you can disconnect the vpn
the pokerstars software will try to reconnect using your normal adsl (which is faster than vpn)

then you can start playing

I looked at their website...it looked a little pricey. Do you know if maybe I can download the software through proxy like Tor and then once I have the software connect? I am assuming that you can.

VPN is not a software., is like redirecting service.
It works like this:
Your home computer --> Their server in US (which is not blocked) --> Pokerstars server.

You have to pay monthly for that kind of service.

I'm actually looking into this for my college that blocked a lot of sites I play on. Why do you have to disconnect from VPN after you get onto stars? Or do you have to?

I can get on stars fine, same thing with another friend in the area.

If you already have the software download then you can connect. Sometimes I get something that pops up saying I need to update my software. Then it wont connect. But I just disconnect my internet, then re connect and it usually loads up fine.

If you dont have the software downloaded already nothing you can do except the vpn thing the guy mentioned.

my experience is the same as thehabits when i was in beijing and shenzen. you just have to keep trying the stars client over and over and eventually it will let you on.
as to how to install the stars client in the first place, i had a trusted friend download and send me the pokerstars install program over instant messenger.

the VPN is much slower, you will get around 50% - 60% connection.
Your normal connection is much faster.

My wife has a business acquaintance that is getting married in Beijing. She wants to send an appropriate gift. The only stuff online that we can find in English are like fruit baskets and hampers and stuff like that. She thinks that cash in a red envelope is the correct gift, but we aren't going to the wedding.

Does anyone know of any English-speaking sites or businesses that we could use to arrange a wedding gift in Beijing?

Try this website: http://www.cnflowernet.com/

I've used them before with a lot of success. Not sure about how to send gifts other than flowers. Your wife is right, cash in a red envelope is the most appropriate gift. Make sure that whatever you send is not in multiples of 4, like 4 flowers, etc...and NO clocks.

So four clocks would be a bad idea?

Now that is too funny! I will have to ask my Chinese friends this the next time they get into one of "how to give gifts in China properly" speeches.

I think stars might not like the fact you are connecting from different IPs, and could take action on your account.

Online gambling is illegal in HK, Fred. You should know that.

Offline gambling is also explicitly excluded in many cases in HK. Previously poker (and other card games involving money) were totally prohibited.
What has been the big change that has allowed the club rooms to open up?

Is it similar to pachinko, where you are give a prize ticket which enables you to claim prizes. As I have understood the laws (Iamnot a Lawyer, but it seems that they are clear on this subject), any gambling in HongKong is illegal - whether there is a 'fake ticketing' scheme or not.
What will happen in HK when the legal entitiies become involved?
Is there a loophole to jump through or not>

Hey,
I just moved to Shanghai, China and I was just wondering how most people move their money offline? Back in the states I was just getting Pokerstars to send me a check, but I don't know how that works here in China. Basically what's the most convenient way for people to access their money? Ewallets? Checks? etc...
