I think I'm relocating to China for my job so I had a few questions I'd love some input from you guys.

Does anyone know the dynamics of online poker vs live physical rooms? I'd love to hear your perspective on where Chinese players and fish play poker? In terms of online poker clients, which can I use without a vpn vs with a vpn? Do Chinese players know the pokerstars brand or how is it viewed?

Hey guys,

If there is a Chinese member or someone who lives and grinds in China in this P2P community.

Could you please send me a PM? Or if you know someone who is. I would appreciate it a lot!

Kind regards,
WR

Hi guys, looking to do some sportbetting in China. Anybody known any reliable books (either usable without vpn or allow the use of vpn)? Lots of Premier League teams have Chinese sportsbooking sponsoring. Has anyone any experience with those?

Looking to mostly bet NFL.

Is there a poker club in Guangzhou? I read an article about the Gala poker club a couple years ago where they play for free and give out prizes or something. Is that still around?

Hey guys! I live in Belarus but plan on visiting China in copule months.
I read that they have a lot of troubles playing poker online in China. Local farewall blocks an accsess because poker is illegall there.
So maybe someone faced this problem? Is it real to bypass blocking? And how to do it?
I'll be gratefull for any piece of information! Pockerstars' support didn't give an informanitoin about that

Can play on pokerstars, don't need a VPN. Most other sites are accessible with or without vpn. Most sites don't accept a vpn though

There are several pokerclubs in Guangzhou. Not as many as before. Gala got busted by the police in 2015 or early 2016.

Just use some oversea site. The Chinese underground bookmakers give crappy odds. You can always bet through the official government app for sportsbetting though.

The players who play poker, are aware of pokerstars. There is a live pokerscene, not as big as 1-2 years ago. Government is paying more attention to this then before.

Just gonna post this here because it drives me nuts, but I'm continually confused on how to say the number ten. I've always learned to pronounce it like shi. Like fifty 五十 would be Wǔshí. But so many chinese people do not pronounce it like shi, but like si. Wǔ Sì. And when they say forty, i cannot for the life of me tell the difference between 四 and 十. Is this just weird colloquial pronunciation or is the H actually silent in 十 (Shí)? Thanks for the help!

Also I was trying to buy a one liter bottle of water tonight at the big grocery store, but I couldn't seem to find one. They had 5L bottles and .5L bottles out, I said 我要一瓶水 and pointed at the the 5L bottle and said 这个太大 and pointed at the .5L bottle and said 那太小. And they just said 听不懂。How dumb to I come across in this situation? I have no idea how to say liter, but I feel like I made it pretty clear that I wanted a medium sized water bottle.

Both those problems are very common with Chinese who dont speak mandarin very well. They probably didnt get much education and mostly use their local languages.

Oh also this might sound dumb but it's sometimes important to establish that you are speaking Chinese.

^^^ Lol

I couldn't really articulate why the last problem occurs, but thought about it today and feel like I can now. If you are a native Spanish speaker, and a French speaker comes in and you are expecting him to speak french but instead he starts speaking mediocre Spanish, you will pick up on it very easily. Now if you are a native spanish speaker who speaks decent but not great english and the french guy comes in...

You will be listening expecting him to say French, and then when he starts speaking in your second language, English, it will be very hard to recognize because you will be listening for French. If he first says, "I'm speaking english now" you know what to listen for and it becomes much easier.

Isn't shi/si a north-south regional thing?

Excellent question RW, I'm still confused. This is in Cambodia, where most are from southern China, and most say it like si.

As for the grocery store exchange, sometimes it feels like some Chinese people just choose to shut off their brain when a laowei tries to engage them in Mandarin (even if it **** Mandarin). I have spent like 9 mo in China, so i'm not completely clueless when it comes to pronunciation (wishful thinking perhaps).

Very many dialects and pronunciations in Mandarin. Like any other language really...

They're shutting off their brain because they think you are speaking a language they dont have the first clue about.

I imagine store clerk in cambodia is not reserved for Chinas finest. So you've probably got some kid who learned his local town dialect, then learned guagngdonghua or another regional dialect, and finally learned mandarin. Hes expecting you to speak english and hes listening for the few English words he can understand when you're actually speaking his third language. Really need to make it clear you are speaking mandarin first... and even then they might just only understand perfectly spoken mandarin, and could even struggle with that.

I doubt you'll have problems with an educated person who learned mandarin since he was a kid.

"Shi" is always the correct way I believe. Some people have trouble saying it due to their local dialects, but that doesnt make both pronunciations correct.

I was in an elevator once and a Guangdong local asked a mandarin speaker to hit the 14th floor, mandarin speaker said there arent 40 floors in the building.

It’s funny how Chinese are allowed to pronounce wrong between each other’s, but when a laowai do the same thing they suddenly don’t understand the whole speech. It’s like double standard. But yeah that mostly happens outside my university.
