Had some issues with UK immigration and now looking into alternative locations to stay for a few months in the EU...

Basic question is that if I show up to Malta under the guise of visiting friends, can I just stay for 3 months with no issues? I saw that they are not doing the extended tourist visa anymore, any news on if/when that will be added again?

(guessing you're US) Malta is in the Schengen area, UK isn't; you're going to need a Schengen visa as far as I know, which isn't much. I highly doubt you can just "pop-in" and get 3 month, you'll probably have to apply first; check with the Maltese embassy in UK
[edit]hey, apprently you're Visa-exempt as a US citizen! so I'm wrong, you can just go without anything and stay 3 month in the Schengen area

If you are in Barcelona, I believe the clock is ticking. You can't stay 3 months in Spain and then go to Malta for 3. It's 3 months total in the Shengen area.

this is right.
and you can't reset it by just crossing a border; you get 3 months out of a 6-month period in Schengen area so do the math.

That's right but just to clarify, ID card = no deposit. Without one it's 3 months + deposit on the box also, IIRC they wanted 400-500 from me total. And I'm guessing on this part but knowing Melita if you ever want your deposit back they'll make it as difficult as possible to get. So if you're eligible for an ID card I'd suggest getting one first, it's only a 5 minutes in the ID card office (x2) and you'll have it in a few days - and you can use the prepaid backup while you wait.

thanks!

more nittery, but when you say prepaid, it's buying a stick then prepay for a data plan right? https://www.vodafone.com.mt/internetkey

Yep, unless you already have a compatible dongle from home in which case you can just get a SIM card and put it in. Every grinder should have prepaid as backup, the internet itself is mostly reliable now they've finished the fibre roll out but boiler 7 sometimes causes havoc (so make sure you keep your laptop charged also).

How is the cash game action at the casinos in Malta? Soft? What kind of games and limits do they have?

I will be there from November 15th up to November 21th for the European Championship of Single Table Tournaments (ECOSTT).

Hey, I'm moving to Malta 15-30 of October. If you are still playing football by then, I would love to get some exercise and play some football and meet some new people. (I have been playing football quite a bit, but these days I'm just in terrible shape, so I suckk)..

BTW!!!

Do you know, If I should buy new monitor(30")+computer from Finland or should I just wait till I get to Malta and buy there? I mean, I don't know how to transfer my new computer to Malta from Finland. Is it worth it? Any ideas?

I can't imagine that buying a new computer right before you move would be a good idea. Do you really want to worry about transporting it to Malta without it getting damaged?

Okay, so better option would be just to buy it there. Thanks.

Been here for a week, and people told me that Maltese stores suck. One of my housemates is even considering flying back to Germany just to buy a 30" screen, so if I were you, I'd take it on the plane. My friend took his 30" with him to Thailand, and said it was very easy and safe to do.

agreed, its impossible to buy a good value high resolution 30 inch monitor here

Where to find something that could fit a 30" or 24" monitor to be brought on a plane.... I wonder.

Any ideas?

If you search the forums there are a couple of threads about monitor cases that can do it. They are not cheap.
